Film score releases licensed from film studios - a list

If anybody is wondering why Warner's list is so small outside of Varese, I direct you to two blog posts by Lukas Kendall

In recent years, Warner Bros. has pivoted away from doing soundtrack album licenses at all, for a bunch of reasons that have to do with corporate ownership and directives, which I’m not really qualified to analyze—and even if I was, I’d probably keep my mouth shut.

Warner Bros. is a magnificent studio with a ton of film and TV music that they could monetize—and at the moment they don’t want to invest the resources into the legal clearances and research to do it.

I don’t want to chronicle how we got from there to here, but at the moment, the studio is so hollowed out, there’s just no way they can research titles for music licensing. So that’s why so many of those great old unreleased scores aren’t coming out on CD. And, in fact, why even the CDs that were already released, not only by FSM but other labels, aren’t being distributed digitally.

from https://www.lukaskendall.com/post/warner-bros-layoffs

As for how the Varese WB titles happen - there are no new licenses granted for these, Varese already has a license to release any music from those films.  So WB just has to sign-off of the new editions, not figuring out a license like they would for a film that had a score album on a major music label.

Warner Bros. Pictures (New Line)

  1. 2020-03-03 The Swarm (1978) - Jerry Goldsmith - LLL
  2. 2020-03-27 U.S. Marshals (1998) - Jerry Goldsmith - Varese
  3. 2020-08-28 Wild Wild West (1999) - Elmer Bernstein - Varese
  4. 2020-09-22 Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) - Michael Kamen - Intrada

  5. 2021-01-08 Looney Tunes: Back In Action (2003) - Jerry Goldsmith - Varese
  6. 2021-06-22 A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) - John Williams - LLL
  7. 2021-06-11 The Matrix (1999) - Don Davis - Varese
  8. 2021-11-19 Elf (2003) - John Debney - Varese

  9. 2022-03-11 The Iron Giant (1999) - Michael Kamen - Varese
  10. 2022-05-20 Presumed Innocent (1990) - John Williams - Varese
  11. 2022-11-18 L.A. Confidential (1997) - Jerry Goldsmith - Varese

Here's something interesting that surprised me... for many years I had thought an expansion of Goldsmith's City Hall would have to be licensed through Sony Pictures. After all, as IMDb or Wikipedia says, it was distributed by Sony Pictures and the Columbia Pictures subsidiary was one of the production companies:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Hall_(1996_film)

But the OTHER production company on the film, Castle Rock, seems to take precedence in terms of US soundtrack album rights for whatever reason...because the back of the booklet insert for City Hall: The Deluxe Edition says "© Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc." multiple times! So this is actually Varese Sarabande's ninth Warner Bros.-licensed expansion since 2020, when new Warner Bros.-licensed expansions from the other specialty labels dried up. So ironic that Varese Sarabande perpetuity agreements seem to be preventing us from getting expansions of many titles, but when it comes to Warner Bros. it seems like they are a saving grace which are allowing expansions to keep coming out for that studio's holdings, when other labels can't seem to get any traction licensing from WB since the pandemic began almost three and a half years ago!

@Jay, at FSM Mike shared:

Quote

Oddly enough this is not a Disney/20th title in terms of music rights. They have a distribution partnership on the movie, so they were involved in reviewing copy & providing photos, but Robert Wise shares copyright on the movie and I represented that side of it on the project. It's all owned by Rodgers & Hammerstein, which was acquired by Concord in 2017 when they bought Imagem. The RCA Victor/Sony Music rights needed to expire and revert to R&H on January 1, 2021 in order to make it possible for me to merge album master material with studio scoring elements, which of course I was in the ideal position to do and be a one-stop shop for the whole thing.

EDIT: Whoops, I saw from the other thread that you did catch this post from Mike, but just hadn't updated here yet. Sorry!

You'd have no way of knowing that, because Varese is still not including who produced, edited, mixed, and mastered their Club titles on their product pages / press releases

And now with all labels done announcing for the year, we can see that the entire calendar year of 2023 went by without a single title licensed from Fox/20th.

Closest we got was Roger saying "Nightbreed" was coming back in May, but then it never came out.
