Popular Post GerateWohl 4,344
Dos: As I said before, I would like the documentary to focus on Williams' professional life and his music. I want to see much footage from his recording sessions and stories from himself. My dream would be a mini-seires and each one hour episode covering one decade of his life since the 1950s. Don'ts: I don't necessarily need stories about pencil and paper at the piano, cookies from ASM and better dead composers for Schindler's List. But that's probably inevitable. Popular Post Muad'Dib 1,801
That it's not covered with testimonies from other people that consist only of praises for the man. For example, the Morricone documentary was fantastic mostly for Ennio himself still being alive when they recorded the documentary and for getting to hear a lot of his best works in the cinema, but the testimonies from other people weren't all that interesting. And they had to cover so much ground that most of the actually interesting stories didn't have a chance to have a proper ending. You should listen to Maurizio's video casts with the LA Studio musicians and others at The Legacy of John Williams. These cover that part pretty much. I wouldn't expect more insight on that from a film documentary. Andy, enderdrag64, Once and 1 other 3

Andy 4,092
Maurizio's podcast was precisely what I had in mind when I posted. Popular Post Andy 4,092
On that note, they should let Ke Huy Quan introduce and narrate it. Why? Because his revival came too late for Indy 5 Everyone loves him and he’s not an obvious choice. He has had a theme written for him. He loves film music. mrbellamy 6,272
One thing that did occur to me with this doc that I am actually kind of worried about is the potential for musical mistakes. I was reminded of this thread with Williams talking about the "7th on the bottom" in Bouzereau's Indy featurette and it was concluded that an inaccurate example had been used, and that even Williams himself may have been misremembering how he'd used the technique... So I don't know, I would hope Williams would have enough care and oversight on this as opposed to a DVD featurette, and that anything he might say about a score is illustrated correctly or clarified, but it definitely strikes me as the kind of thing that could open itself up to mistakes... Popular Post Thor 7,478
My ideal documentary would be exclusively about pre-JAWS Williams, but I realize that is for the specially interested, so I take whatever I can get. I doubt this documentary -- whatever form it takes, or whoever makes it -- will provide us hardcore Williams fans with much new information, but hopefully with some new footage, or some stretches of sheer observation. That will be the takeaway here, since Spielberg is (sadly) not directing it (and hence I don't think we should be expecting a documentary on the level of Tornatore's ENNIO: THE MAESTRO).
