John Williams 2023 Tanglewood concerts

Short but sweet from the Maestro tonight! Only the three pieces listed and he didn’t say a word (nor did any conductors but Lockhart), but he was still quite energetic and we exchanged some glances and a “thank you”.

Was a great night, I really don’t know how much more of these he has left in him sadly . It was really cool to see a row with Michael Gorfaine, John’s daughter and Anne Sophie Mutter next to each other.

The Film Night concert was impressive and emotional this year.

 

I really hope that we will get the chance to have a recording or a CRB broadcast for this "Tanglewood in Parade" 2023 concert.

CBR does not hold the rights for recording/broadcast of Tanglewood on Parade.

Because, sometimes they did in the past.

They provided CRB broadcast for the 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017 concerts and two video pieces from the 2022 concert on the BSO's VOD website.

Sometimes it is in late september.

CRB last streamed it in the mid 2010's. I want to say that the 2017 one was already streamed on another station.

BSONow is operated by BSO so they can stream their own performances as they understand.

The Williams portion of Tanglewood on Parade was short and sweet, with a nice selection of familiar pieces played beautifully. Williams was especially impassioned toward the end of Born on the Fourth of July, he seemed to be trying to draw as much feeling as he could from the players. Not much else to report honestly, but it was a nice complement to the Film Night show, with no repeats in the program.

 

It was good to catch up with @rpvee a bit, and I also REALLY enjoyed the rest of Tanglewood on Parade! I've never been to this event before, but I'd love to go again. It's sort of an all-day festival of performances by the very talented students who spend the summer in educational programs at Tanglewood, with a nice variety of music, and good use of both the shed and Ozawa hall. The fireworks at the end were fun. I'm confused as to why they put this all-day event on a Tuesday, though.

 

At 7:30, half an hour before the main concert began, there was a series of fanfares performed in the shed, including "A Toast!" That was a nice little bonus.

Is this a shorter version of Superman March or am I confused? The Berlin version seems different.

 

Did anyone else notice the active mixing on the broadcast? For example the horns in Far and away are more quiet in the end, barely audible while they were much louder before.

Thanks for that! Unfortunately one of my least played Williams scores that I own    But I like the main theme! And I like when Williams writes music that's supposed to be funny.

 

Too bad they never finished the sequel, 1942, to celebrate this post.

Last time I was at Tanglewood four years ago I was eating lunch at the Café after the morning rehearsal. Overheard a small group of TMC students sitting the next table over, with one pretentious-looking Asian dude asking his friend if he was "going to the 'stupid' concert" that evening.

 

"Stupid concert?"

 

"Yeah yeah.. the FILM NIGHT" (with the contemptuous eye roll).

 

Felt like saying: You rich little sh*t.. NOTHING you'll ever compose will ever even come close to matching the work that Maestro Williams has done.

 

Still amazed of the level of anti-film-music snobbism that still exists in the classical music world, even in a location like Tanglewood where Williams' work (like Bernstein and Copland) played such an important role in the history of the place.

Forgot to share this! When I was hanging around the Tanglewood grounds the day of Parade, I walked by the sound/lighting tables towards the back of the shed and noticed a pile of papers there from the Film Night rehearsals. A few minutes later, I saw a guy at the tables, and I asked him if I could have one of the Film Night setlists, which he had zero problems with. I always try to get setlists from more contemporary concerts I go to, so to get the closest thing to one from a John Williams concert is so exciting! I have one from this year’s NYC show as well. They’re definitely a unique sorta collectible that give neat little insights into the technicalities of the show.

They all appeared to be teenagers, and we wondered if they realized what a special opportunity this was for them.

That's the oboe player, and he was in the middle of practicing the solo from Throne Room at the time.

That one is Keisuke Wakao, principal of the BSO and to whom Williams wrote his Oboe Concerto.
