This has been delayed to 2027

The 30th anniversary of publication of Philosopher's Stone and the 20th of Deathly Hallows.

Also the 20th anniversary of Order of the Phoenix the movie, but no one cares about that

Yeah I'm starting to think that Dev Patel is actually good casting for Snape, as long as they use makeup to make him a bit more sinister/Slytherin-looking... but maybe this guy just had a great audition? A lot can be accomplished with acting and prosthetics...

Patel would be my preferred choice, he's such a great actor and in the same age range.

Hmmmmmm.

John Lithgow Nears Deal To Play Dumbledore In HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series

Quite like Lithgow, but isn't he American? And he seems a little...old...for what is likely  going to be a ten-year commitment?

Uh.... I realize that British actors steal American roles in film and TV all the time, but this just feels wrong to me.

Well, except if the men have to do frontal nude.

The second famous American named John to be involved with HP?

Yeah, I'm not against it. I actually think he could be really good for the role. I've seen him display just the combination of empathy, kindness and intelligence, with hint of mischief, that anyone playing Dumbledore ideally needs.

Just a bit surprised Rowling is going along with it, and given that he's almost 80, I wonder how long he can do it for.

Must have been. She was always a stickler for casting British actors as British characters before on the films (and to be fair, French actors as French characters, etc.)

This is a pertinent point actually, I hadn't realised Lithgow was quite this old.

It’s his age that concerns me. He was excellent as Churchill.

They'll just have to recast if he dies, like the did for the movies. Problem solved.

Robert Downey Jr. IS Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore.

Other than this issue with his age, I think Lithgow could be outstanding in this role. And Rowling would have to be convinced of it to sign off, especially considering he's not British.

There was also this:

Not looking forward to seeing James Potter hang him upside down in a tree...

It's just strange to me as Snape is one of the most well described characters in the book, and even besides the race, the actor just has nothing in common with him in terms of facial features.

I thought the point of a longer from TV adaptation was to make it more accurate to the books, and now this along with the writers not having read the books before now, it doesn't seem like they're going to do that so... what is the point then? Just to have another interpretation I guess?

Or just the usual:

Money Weve Got To Have Money GIF - Money Weve Got To Have Money ...

The overall quality of actors officially considered for roles is much higher than I was expecting for a tv-series (Oscar-nominated actors like McTeer, Lithgow, Rylance). When they are clearly capable of attracting high-profile actors, giving the most juicy adult character to a comparably unknown actor was a surprise to me. But it makes me believe he must've given one hell of an audition!

I'm optimistic!

I hope we get some great Nicholas Hooper callbacks in the show's music.

Given Hooper's bRiLLiAnT callback to the "Quidditch Year 3" music of all things I wouldn't even be surprised at this point.

Despite his not being British, I’ve really warmed to the idea of Lithgow as Dumbledore. I think it could be something special.

I haven’t seen enough work from these other actors to draw any conclusions.

I liked the rumour/fan casting of Peter Capaldi as Dumbledore.

I also think it's weird that they apply the "diversity casting" to a character so almost villainous.

It would've been less controversial had they chosen to do it with one of the heroes or neutral teachers or so.

Guess we'll wait and see...

McTeer is going to be an excellent McGonagall I suspect; I’ve seen her in a number of things and this pick feels right. Frost is going to have to gain some of his old weight back, to portray Hagrid methinks.

Frost and Whitehouse are good choices - not sure if Whitehouse is well known outside of the UK.

Aside from Lithgow, I'm unfamiliar with any of the others.

Or perhaps to wear a fat suit, just like Brendan Fraser on The Whale

Funny that Paul Whitehouse was cut from Prisoner of Azkaban as Sir Cadogan

Almost completely cut, yeah, but he's still hilarious in the background of some remaining scenes.

I loved those games so much! The HP4 ones killed me though.

As for the series, strangely enough I'm becoming more and more dis-interested the more news we get. Films 1-4 are classics to me, I don't need an alternate take on those.

I'll go with 1-2.

I'm so annoyed with the direction things took afterwards.

5&6 I thought were somewhat decent again.

7&8 was a drop right back down.

But I like the first Fantastic Beasts.
