Jay 37,355
Lots of Williams' score is chopped up, moved around, tracked into other scenes, or just unused in the film. My list doesn't reflect any of that, just the full cues where they were intended to go, with the party music that got used in the film sequenced where it was used. So yea, if I split up a main program track, it's because the track is comprised of multiple cues, and something went chronologically in between them. Holko 9,526
In this week's edition of weird mashups my brain came up with and I can't forget: when the theme from Sabrina plays in my head, the string bridge from Minority Report's A New Beginning comes in after a statement, and then Sabrina continues after. Holko 9,526
Well, after the first few listens I can say for sure that I really like this score! In my mind I slot it between Presumed Innocence and Always, having more variation and diversity than the former but not as much of a clear dramatic arc and satisfying resolution as the latter. I knew it was going to be piano-heavy but not how woodwind-heavy it is! Woodwinds are great! The booklet's nice, though it talks more about the movie and JW's inspirations than the score. I wasn't a big fan of the movie but when I read that it was a remake of a 1954 one I just went "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, yeah it makes sense now!" Titus is great as always, mostly tastefully simple and elegantly restrained here. I also really like Party in the Moonlight! It will probably most commonly function as some nice easy listening to put on as pleasant background noise, but I love how much overthinking and "story' Mike put into it in the booklet! One thing that weirdly stands out is La Vie An Rose at the end - not only is it the only tune from it that I already knew, but IMO somehow it feels like a different kind than the rest of the disc, bigger, louder, more in your face. Jay 37,355
Maybe they wanted it to stand out during the second party sequence since its a call back to the song's melody being used as underscore during the final Paris scene

Popular Post MrJosh 892
I really love Photographing Paris and Growing Up in Paris. A couple of my favorite tracks out of the whole score. I listened yesterday and there's a sound in there that brings me back to some of the 'magic' I felt when first really getting into movie scores and John Williams. Not sure specifically what it is yet, maybe I'll analyze it later and figure it out, or maybe it'd be more fun not to know. Popular Post Jay 37,355
I listened to this album again today (well, the first disc) after not having heard it in a while. I kind of fell in love with the score! It's damn good, and the 50 minute main score presentation is perfect, it gives me everything I need. I've only seen the film once, but listening to this main program makes me feel like I've been taken on the journey of the whole film, and I really enjoyed the constant appearances of the three major themes. The amount of way he varies them so it always stays fresh is impressive! The 25 minutes of bonus tracks are nice to have as well, though I won't listen to them as often as I will the main program. It's funny, when a new expansion first comes out, all you can think about it how it compares to the old album, or the film, or whatever, and it kind of gets judged a bit on those qualities as well as how it compares to other Williams expansions - at least, all these kinds of thoughts go through my head. But then eventually on later listens, you just evaluate it as one of John's scores in amongst all his others. I feel like I never can really judge his scores until we get these expansions, and it's so great that so many of them have gotten them now, and we can really evaluate his whole body of work with the full releases of so many of his film scores being a part of that. It's wonderful how many we've gotten and I can't wait to keep filling in the holes with more! Jurassic Shark 12,072
IMO, the main theme to Sabrina is one of JW's best. mahler3
Trope 527
Does anybody else hear similarities between certain phrases from JW's "How Can I Remember?" and "Reflection" from Mulan (1998)? Jay

Yes. Every time. And I prefer Reflection. Even though How Can I Remember was there first.
Popular Post Jay 37,355
Earlier this week I took the shrinkwrap off my physical copy and listened to both discs all the way through as-is. Actually by happenstance, I had to pause and go to something after the main program, before the bonus track section, and then again after that, before disc 2. So it was nice to enjoy each of the three "programs" here as their own things. Boy, what a joy this release is. For a score that I never knew/listened to before the expansion came to be, it's really shot up the ranks for me as one of my favorite Williams. Not necessarily an any-time listen, but when the mood strikes its EXACTLY what I want kind of listen. And this listen was great, I love the way Williams bounces between all the themes throughout the main program. And boy, I get why the "Learning The Ropes" synth/drum sound is considered dated, but I think it fits in well with the rest of the score! So glad we have both versions of that music. Disc 2 is really cool, there's nothing else quite like it in Williams' ouvre is there? How lucky are we that he agreed to have all this released when we know he's said no to so much of his own source compositions not being out there. This album is really cool! I hope people don't pass on it just from not knowing (or not liking) the movie, or for it not being a sci fi / action / adventure score. There's so much to like here! Bespin 8,480
The OST will be on the 20 CD box "The Legend of John Williams", that's not a random choice!

I couldn't have said it better myself (certainly not in English, anyway ). I'm not a big fan of ranking things, but I thiiink this, Harry Potter and Amistad are my favourite John Williams-expansions so far. Holko 9,526
I'm not sure if I've even listened to this one since I did the iso score but now I did (needed a short sweet listen after last night's Requiem for Humanity aka A.I. ) and man, what a lovely perfectly flowing main program! Mike worked wonders with this mess of tiny cues and many versions. Jay
