Naïve Old Fart 12,871 Posted September 15, 2023 Posted September 15, 2023 I thought that I would create a thread, whereby JWfaners could look back on their day, and comment on it, if they wanted to. I am not at work. I'm not ill, but there has been a diesel leak into the water system, on the island where I live (don't believe me? Google it). Consequently, a lot of businesses (including my place of work) have had to close, for the foreseeable. Bummer. I wouldn't mind, but it will be Tuesday at the earliest until my workplace re-opens. In the meantime, no-one on the island can use water to cook, drink, launder, or wash (don't believe me? Google it!). All my weekend reading material is at work, which has been locked since Wednesday, and I am going stir crazy. JoeinAR 1

Richard P 5,234 Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 Sorry to hear that. I've just had covid for essentially two weeks - Thursday before last I realised that something other than our heatwave was going on. It's now basically gone and I'm just feeling a bit more tired than I usually would and sinuses feeling a bit weird, but I basically just had two weekends of lying on the bed not doing very much. ... and I'm heading off to the States with the parents and meeting my brother in just over a week causing minor panic in the household whether I can avoid giving it to them. So far, so good. Naïve Old Fart 1

Naïve Old Fart 12,871 Posted November 12, 2023 Author Posted November 12, 2023 Yesterday, I needed a stamp so I could send a letter. Naïve Old Fart 12,871 Posted November 26, 2023 Author Posted November 26, 2023 Thanks for asking, JS. Not the baby Jesus thing. That was, actually, funny. It was a very frustrating day at work. For the longest time, I've felt like a fifth wheel. Meetings being cancelled at last minute after I've cancelled something else so that I could attend; staff not returning my e-mails (apparently they are busy. Yeah? Well, we're all fucking busy, aren't we, but I took the time to send you an e-mail about a work issue. Do you think I write e-mails for my fucking health?!); people being no-shows, when I have set aside time for 1:1s. The usual stuff. Thankfully, it's going a lot better, now. In the past three weeks, my work has gone from manageable, to manic. Still, it keeps me busy, I guess, and I'm getting on a lot better with certain staff than I have since I started. We've got Secret Santa coming up, soon. That should be fun. Jurassic Shark 1

Naïve Old Fart 12,871 Posted November 28, 2023 Author Posted November 28, 2023 I just wanted to post this. This evening, I needed to go to my local grocery store. I pulled up in the car park, got out, and locked the door. The car park is by a loch, so I went over to the edge of the car park, and I looked out, over the loch to the houses, beyond. I saw the house lights reflected in the still, black water, and I saw the black shapes of wee islands, and I saw the sun going down, and I said to myself: "This place is fucking beautiful". Just thought I'd share that. Jay and Mr. Hooper 2
Naïve Old Fart 12,871 Posted December 13, 2023 Author Posted December 13, 2023 Does anyone live with diabetes? I'm talking Miletus, here, and not Insipidus. I have lived with it since 2017, and recently my HBA1C (those of you with diabetes will know what I'm talking about) skyrocketed to 62 (based on blood tests from three months ago). It was the highest score, in my entire life. A recurring kidney issue didn't help matters, but following an operation to remove the offending stone, I decided to cut out all food that might be bad for both my kidneys, and my diabetes, and eat healthier. That was six weeks ago. I saw the specialist diabetes nurse one week ago, for another HBA1C, and she called me up, today, with the result. It's 45! It's down seventeen fucking points, in three months! How brilliant is that?! If I carry on like this - and I will - I could reverse the diabetes, by next Spring. Bespin Copilot 1

After being so "good" in what I eat, nowadays (no crisps; no cakes; no pastries; no processed meat; no cheese; no fried food; no "dark juice"; avoiding certain foods for the sake of my kidneys), I kind of let myself go, over the festive season. The thing is, all those pigs in blankets, and Christmas cake, and mince pies... I didn't really enjoy it. I felt guilty that I had, somehow, betrayed my new-found lifestyle. Ah, well. Naïve Old Fart 12,871 Posted June 24, 2024 Author Posted June 24, 2024 Illness sucks, doesn't it! Friday I had a wee cold. By the time I woke up yesterday, I ached all over, was freezing, and I couldn't get out of bed. Today, I have no voice, and my lungs feel like they are on fire. Every time I try to speak, I end up sounding like Harvey Fierstein. I've had to call work (always an embarrassment, because you're never sure if they believe you), and worse, I had to cancel seeing pupils, and my attendance at a youth club that I helped to create. Fuck's sake. I hate being ill.
Xander Harris 9,528 Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 Ya sick bastard! You're the kinda person that makes this a terrible world to live in! Uhh, wait. Maybe not the right quote. We're sick. I think we're dying. I don't want him to die. What can we do that we're not already doing?
bollemanneke 4,317 Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Well, my day just began two hours earlier than expected. Neighbour's child was crying. Instead of doing what anyone with social skills would have done, namely comfort her/talk to her, the guy let her at it for 10 minutes and then just stormed into her room, shouting 'STOP, STOP!' like a deranged fucking maniac. Prick. They couldn't handle their first child and it seems child number 2 is in for a great youth too now. God, why can't I just not care about this? Naïve Old Fart 1
Naïve Old Fart 12,871 Posted June 27, 2024 Author Posted June 27, 2024 I can't speak for you, @bollemanneke, but after working with children for fourteen years, their welfare is at the apex of what I do for a living. If I had heard what you had heard, I would have had absolutely no hesitation in reporting that man to the police. Imho, there are only two legitimate reasons for raising one's voice to a child: 1/ to warn them that they are in immediate danger 2/ to stop them from hurting themselves, or another person. Everything else is abuse.
bollemanneke 4,317 Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Yeah, to be honest, I was to shocked to even consider pounding on the wall. We've been talking about reporting them for a long time because the children often spend minutes on end screaming, presumably for attention, something they're incapable of giving them as talking/interacting seems to be a real difficulty for them. And then you can't say that not everyone should have children because HUMAN RIGHTS and DEMOCRATIC. Naïve Old Fart 1
Naïve Old Fart 12,871 Posted June 27, 2024 Author Posted June 27, 2024 Anyone can have children, but not everyone has the skills, the stamina, or even the desire, to raise them. I have worked with children whose parents have repeatedly proven my point, and I have often spent as many hours "educating" the parents, as I have helping thier child. It doesn't take much to slip-on a condom before penetration, and to avoid the sort of scene that you heard, years down the road. In the case of the child next door, if you suspect abuse of any kind, I believe that you have a clear moral duty to report your concerns. bollemanneke 1
bollemanneke 4,317 Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 We don't suspect, we have... wondered. But then we're wondering about a great deal of things regarding the people surrounding us, one of which cases might be taken to court. Honestly, the current population of my city is getting worse by the month. Naïve Old Fart 1
