Spielberg question

I just received my copy of Home Alone 2 and in the notes it says something like "It's a good thing that Chris Columbus decided not to have Mr. Spielberg executive produce his film Home Alone because Williams would not have been able to do the score as working with Williams is a treat Spielberg reserves for himself." Can enyone elaborate on this? Does this mean that if Spielberg produces your movie you can't even ask Williams to do the score? Is this why Poltergeist, The Twilight Zone, and Gremlins were all scored by Goldsmith? Thanks.

But techincally, if Spielberg did produce Home Alone, wouldn't Williams and Spielberg still be working together? I don't get this.

Does it mean that, as producer on the film, he wouldn't get the same kind of collaboration with Williams that he would as a director, and that would irk him?

Jeff -- who thinks Spielberg has been very nice to let his composer Williams work with Columbus, Lucas, Stone and others

It's a fact that Williams never scored a film that Spielberg merely produced, but i think the comment in the  linernotes were ment in a "tongue in cheek" kinda way.

. . . don't know about that. I looked up the the exact quote,

"Ironically, had Columbus gone on to helm films with Spielberg as executive producer, he wouldn't have been able to have a John Williams score, since Spielberg has (at least so far) reserved that distinction for only films he directs himself."

The phrase "at least so far" seems to indicate that this an observation and not a stated fact- but upon examination it does seem to be true.

Maybe Spielberg is concerned that with other films and concert works already vying for JW's attention (Star Wars etc.), the last thing he would want to do is encourage more.

All conjecture (so is Mattesino's comment apparently), but it is interesting conjecture.

I just received my copy of Home Alone 2 . . .

I hope you enjoy the set as much as I have. One of my favorite tracks is William's spoof on the Steiner era romantics in Suite from Angels with Filthy Souls II complete with Wagnerian chromaticism and descending string arpeggios.

Every time I listen to it it cracks me up all over again.

Yes, I love it. I also enjoy the Steiner spoof but I also like the variation on Tchaikovsky's (sp) "Dance of the Reed Flutes" from the Nutcracker in "To the Plaza, Presto." "Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas" is also a great piece of music and a very uplifting carol.

Williams didn't technically compose Jurassic Park III, but some would consider it Williams work, and it looks like Williams might just end up scoring Jurassic Park IV, which would be Spielberg produced, but not directed. Certainly is an interesting observation that I hadn't noticed before that he has never scored a picture that Spielberg has produced only and not directed.
