Williams Most Comedic Cue

Williams once said that he rather not write funny music under a funny scene because then the scene would lose its impact. Don't try to be funnier with your music than the movie!

Did you ever discover funny moments in Williams' music?

The Witches of Eastwick. It has some stunning moments of pure fun.

And I'll have to listen to 1941 (and E.T.) again because I think there are some great comedic moments heard through JW's score as well.

The only time I ever laughed at music in the theater was in AoTC- when the music swells to a huge crescendo as ther'ye about to kiss, then a€bruptly stops as they cut it off.

"No Ticket" from Last Crusade, "Frogs" from E.T. not to mention one of my all time FAVORITE moments when JW quotes his own StarWars music by using Yoda's theme in the "The Magic Of Halloween." I can just imagine he had a good laugh when that idea popped into his head. I've always wondered if he had to pay royalties to himself. . .

Oh yes- "Ben's Antics" from Stepmom and all the Lex Luthor stuff in Superman.

That's funny, this is one of my favorite pieces of music (re-recording) and I never noticed anything. I still don't hear it. Where exactly does he quote Yoda's Theme?

I don't know if you are joking, Alex...

1'15'' in the re-recording, 0'44'' in the OST.

In regards to the topic, I will say any moment with the villains of Home Alone.

Peio, whose only recording of Yoda's theme was (for years) the one in The Magic of Halloween.

I think the funniest moment is in Temple of Doom when Indy's fist comes out of that little hole and there's a suspenseful, "DUN NUNNNNNNNNN!"

The most famous one is probably 'Holiday Flight' from 'Home Alone', an excellent homage to Tchaikovsky also.

'Jaws 2' always raises a chuckle with 'The Menu' cue, the tuba's accompanying two ladies large behinds walking down the beach :-) A similar motif being used for 'The Banquet' scene in 'Hook' when the well built kid (apologies can't remember his name) eats the imaginary food.

Not composed by Williams, but a clever and amusing orchestral workout worth checking out is the Williams/Boston Pops recording of 'Twelve days Of Christmas' on Philip's 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'

Then there's 'John Goldarb' which i find amusing for probably the wrong reasons!

That made me laugh to. Now any time i watch AOTC i expect to here that old sound heard in so many movies when the music stops. That sound of like a DJ scratching a record or something. Sorry, but i don't know exactly what the noise is. Anyway, that bit made me laugh out loud in the cinema, so people looked around at me thinking i was nuts and laughing at nothing.

In regards to the topic i really don't know. I can't remember enough cues.

There must be something funny in the Mynock Cave cue from ESB, or at least in the way the LSO once played it when they recorded the score, as Williams stops conducting and starts laughing at that point in the BBC documentary.

Marian - who can't figure out what he finds so funny.

"March of the Villains" from Superman. Well, as a a leitmotif in the film, the theme use is very clever. High end of the orchestra for Lex Luthor's villainy, low end for the bumbling Otis.

Kevin and KM beat me to it.

Nocturnal Activities and Bug Tunnel and Death Trap from ToD.

No matter how many times I see that part of the movie, I just laugh and laugh and laugh!

In fact, those sequences (along with the frozen-monkey brain dinner) the dark storyline is kept from being absolutely morbid with these moments. Without them, I'd think TOD was the weakest of the 1st three Indy films, NOT TLC. The comedy makes the last two, while the adventure made Raiders.

But who cares which is the weakest anyway... all three are masterpieces in my mind.

-Chris, Who is hoping that Indy 4 will kick butt.

It's been a while since I watched it, but I believe the cue happens when E.T. spots a trick-or-treating kid dressed up in a Yoda costume, thinks its one of his own kind, and goes happily trotting off after him. Great JW moment.

Shocking that you never heard Yoda's Theme there before. It's especially noticeable in the film. I caught it in the theatres as a 7 or 8 year old boy in 1982. ;)

That reminds me. KM? Did you find Jabba's Theme in The Flag Parade/Pod Race sequence yet? :P

The cellos and woodwinds were out of sync I seem to recall. What a great documentary that was! An updated doc is long overdue, Mr Lukas Kendall are you listening? Or better yet, Sony maybe you could honour your artist with this to make up for the Episode 1 shambles! ;)

Was great to see the maestro at home playing chamber music and see him working intimately with Ken Wannberg rather than the usual brief interview here, there and blink and you'll miss it recording session footage that most docs feature nowadays (apart from the wonderful extras on ET that is :-).

I heard it the 1st time... still surprised that you cannot! 8O

It isn't a full-blown rendition of the theme. It's like a little nod to it. I'm not skilled in reading or writing music, but it's not the whole thing, which may be the reason why you are having a hard time hearing it.

even if I hum Jabba's theme I can't match it to the TPM music that's supposed to be it.

but i can hear The Emperor's theme in Augie's band and Schindler's List in Harry Potter.
