When scores beat movies

Which John Williams' score(s) is, in your opinion, better than a movie it's written for?

In my opinion they are:

Amistad, Seven Years in Tibet, Sabrina, Jaws 2, Accidental Tourist, Hook.

Why is this thread in "Other Topics"?

The list is good. :o But add TPM to complete it. 1941 would also feel at home there.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

and perhaps not so much better, but surely bigger:

The Empire Strikes Back

- Marc

:o John Williams - Roy's First Encounter from Close Encounters of the Third Kind (CE)

A.I., the Fury, Home Alone 2, Hook, LC, Dracula, Monsignor, Lost World, Patriot.

conversely, the films that were better than the scores are SPR, Schindler's List, AOTC, MR, Amistad, ROTJ.

The first Harry Potter movie. The score was so much better than the movie, that it made the movie look ridiculous.

I think this thread might have to be changed to "Which movie is better than the score". As it seems that in terms of JW, there is a much shorter list involved.

Which facial make-up was better than the movie?

Which editing was better than the movie?

I'm still not sure if you can compare music with film. I never it like when someone says that the book is so much better than the movie either.

Luckily Neil is the moderator of this board and will now certainly ban you for this heresy.

Marian -

but Marian, I am saying the score for the Fury is better than the film, how can it not be.

Joe, who has seen the Fury 2-1/2 times since 1978.

Hmmm...I only saw 10 minutes ot it, more then enough to convince myself that it is utter crap.

DePalma is such an overrated hack, his only halfway decent film is Bonfire Of The Vanities.

Stefancos, Stefancos, you've just unmasked yourself. Bonfire of the Vanities is known as one of the biggest turkeys in the history of cinema. And you know something? It IS a turkey!

I agree, Stefan. I think that DePalma is very overrated, though I think the Untouchables is an oustanding movie, the only one he's made I would say.

The Fury has very beautiful slow motion scenes with no sound other than Williams' score. DePalma really gives Williams alot of space and the chance to stand out.

But other than that, I must confess, he's overrated.

DePalma is a master. Check out Dressed to Kill and Blow Out. The Untouchables is one of my favorite films of all time.

And The Fury (both film and score) are top class works.

It's about twice as good in the movie as it is on CD. So there must be something very good about the movie. :o

De Palma is one of the greatest masters of cinema and extremely underrated. And Bonfire is one of the few of his movies which I don't care about very much.

Marian - suggesting that Stefan should watch Carlito's Way.

I agree with Neil, he's an outstanding director.

I love Body Double, Blow Out, Dressed To Kill and The Untouchables.

His visual style is ALWAYS worthwhile and he has worken with some good composers who did outstanding work for him (not M2M though).

Stefancos- who thought Snake Eyes was underrated

DePalma's best films use Pino Donnagio as composer

Carrie, and Dress to Kill, everything else are lesser efforts.

Maybe it's just me but are there two Stefancosses? Why the sudden swing?

But seeing as you wanted a JW score that's better than the movie, I'd have to go with ET and the Phantom Menace.

E.T. and its score are flawless! (TPM I can agree with).

I know it's not JW, but James Newton Howard's Waterworld was much better than the film.

Most of you guys named the obvious ones. Hook and TPM might stand out here... but IMO, most Williams scores are better than the movies they were scored for. Joe also pointed out a few of the films that were better than the scores, I'd have to agree on most of them.

Although... watch The Fury when Williams' intense music is playing. The telepathic scenes and the slow-motion scenes. It's more of a music video than a movie. I LOVE that about that movie! Lucas could learn ALOT by watching The Fury, CE3K, E.T., and A.I. and see how the music was flawless with the scenes, wherase he ruins those effects by tinkering with the music far too much.

DePalma is overrated as well as (IMO) Kubrick was, but that´s probably just my opinion. Kubrick made many "new" things, which were great, but most of the time the rest of his movies were too slow to me to make my satisfied - 2001, on the other hand, is really good

Scorsese is also a person that´s overrated IMO.

OK, Gangs of New York wasn't his best. We all know. Some of the movies he made are really good (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino). In their genre they are quite hard to beat. Maybe you don't like his typical Scorsese style but, when in form, you will find it hard to pinpoint what it is exactly that is supposedly not good. Try saying that the acting is bad, or that the dialoque is poorly written, or that the camerawork or the editing is clumsy. On the contrary, technically his films are a delight to watch, on all fronts. But it is his streetwise ganster atmosphere that is unparalleled. Like all directors with a vast repertoire you'll find that not everything they touch always turns to gold.
