Jurassic World Rebirth (2025, Gareth Edwards / David Koepp)

Well, as a great fan of John Williams, and artist myself I decided to make it more professional.image.png

This will be just a dream come true! But after all I don't want to seem selfish, I wish him to recover and be with his family more, he already gave us HUGE legacy. Still hope to make Steven Spielberg's new UFO movie.

Agreed! If I had to choose between him scoring Rebirth or Spielberg’s next film, I would choose the latter. I would love to hear brand new orchestral themes and that film would just give us more of what we want (not that we wouldn’t love Rebirth as well).

No word on the composer yet? This is really odd. Makes me think something may have happened behind the scenes. Otherwise they'd have said it already, right?

Nah, not necessarily.

Either they're going for some completely unneeded level of secrecy (who amongst the general public gives a crap who writes this?) or something isn't going well.

None of this feels normal.

Yep. Even if Brian Tyler is the one they chose, why haven't they announced it so far? With all due respect to Tyler, but in terms of fame with general audiences he isn't a John Williams, Hans Zimmer or even Michael Giacchino. So there's no need to hype his name with the general public.

I think something might have occurred...

I could really go for a Jurassic World score composed by the great John Williams.

God that would be amazing

Agreed. I haven’t gotten to experience many Williams scores for the first time in theaters. Yes I know it wouldn’t be all original themes, but it would still be a new score to experience.

There's no way JW will score this. He left Jurassic Park behind 24 years ago.

Agreed and in all honesty I’m not sure I would actually want him to score it at this stage. His style has moved on. Sadly I’m not even that optimistic that we’ll get someone especially noteworthy to use his themes and run with them either. But we can live in hope.

Come on, 1997 wasn't that long ago

Maybe they are generating a wiiliams score with AI and they want a low profile…

They probably invented the actual InGen cloning methods, but used them to create another 1993 John Williams rather than an actual dinosaur.

It is now 96 days until the film is released. The fact they still haven’t announced the composer is crazy. Michael Giacchino was announced as World’s composer May 12th 2014, exactly a year and a month before the film’s June 12th 2015 release date. I think that the lack of information has to mean something. This is probably stupid optimism, but I think at this points it is reasonably possible for John Williams to be announced as the composer.

How long before Rogue One opened was it announced that Giacchino was replacing Desplat?

How long before The Book Thief opened was it discovered that Williams had scored it?

I think it was in September or October of that year, so two or three months before release.

I see. We're currently 96 days before JWR's release in July 2nd.

But we have to keep in mind that R1 was an "extreme" situation, where the composer had little time to write, record and mix the score. Will the same happen with this movie?

Yeah… when was desplat announced? I think it was nearer the film anouncement…

March 16, 2015. 21 months before the release.

But then he dropped the movie... Because of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (!).

Quote

In March 2015, it was reported that Alexandre Desplat who had worked with Edwards on Godzilla (2014), would compose the score for Rogue One,[122] and had confirmed it in an April 2016 interview.[123] As the film's reshooting affected the post-production process, Desplat opted out from the project due to his commitments for scoring Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017), and was replaced by Michael Giacchino in September 2016.[124] Giacchino only had four and a half weeks to compose the music for the film, beginning almost immediately after finishing scoring Doctor Strange.[121] In addition to composing original themes, Giacchino incorporated some of John Williams' themes from previous films into the score.[121]

Desplat must've been pretty eager to score Valerian (it's based in a graphic novel from his home country) because box office wise it wasn't the best decision

A guy named Jonathan Bartz has been added to IMDB for 'music preparation.'

Don't think we can read much into that, because he's worked on scores for Williams (DOD, Fabelmans, TROS), Ross (Obi Wan), Silvestri (Electric State, Here), Powell (Migration, Thelma the Unicorn), Debney (Horizon), Franglen (Avatar 2 and 3), Marianelli (Ghostbusters 4). I assume these were all handled by JKMS?

I honestly hadn't considered that option: they're that unexcited about any hype or PR around the film that they just haven't bothered announcing the composer.

They’re not excited to reveal the composer, which means it must be John Debney.

John Debney of Cutthroat Island fame?

Yeah, very unexciting...

Another clue today that recording sessions might be underway. A double bass session player named Steve Mair has added the film to their IMDB.

Noteworthy that he's London based, so we can rule out any composers who don't record in London (ie. Williams).

Can't read much else into the guy's credits, he's been involved with hundreds of Hollywood scores recorded in London, as far back as TPM and the JW Potter scores.

More recently he's done McCreery's TROP, HGW's Gladiator 2, Zimmer's NTTD, Balfe's MI:DR, Silvestri's Electric State/Witches/Endgame, Powell's HTTYD/Wicked/That Christmas/Thelma, Brittell's Andor, Bowers' Wild Robot, and all the recent Lucasfilm games (Great Circle, SW Jedi 1 and 2).

I can name three Johns that have done better pirate music (Powell, Scott, Williams).

Which scores would you consider better then than the stellar Cutthroat Island?

Hook is great, Pan is fun and didn't Scott do the obscure Shogun Mayeda?

I like Yellowbeard and The Crimson Permanent Assurance too.

But Cutthroat Island remains the stellar Cutthroat Island.

Cutthroat is great fun, but I find Debney does occasional exciting score amongst a sea of generally average work. I rather enjoy Horizon, but what I heard of that Home Alone movie he did, absolutely anyone could've scored that.

I listened to Cutthroat Island for the first time a few times earlier this year and I didn’t get the acclaim.  It was fine.  A full-throated orchestral adventure score, but the melodies weren’t there for me.  Maybe I need to see the movie to “get it.”

Debney’s best work is clearly aping temp tracks from Horner and Elfman.  Not his fault - I’m sure he’s following directors’ leads.

Doesn’t completely rule out Williams. He’s recorded in London before, and airplanes exist and go both directions.

Indeed Debney's best are few and far between.

But when he's on fire, he really cooks.

Though his second best score, Lair, was half written by Kevin Kaska anyway.

Still, thoroughly enjoyable cool stuff.

His Jungle Book is quite fun too.

But even there, "Shere Khan War Theme" (if I recall) basically sounds completely athematic to me.

Liar Liar is cute also.

I must admit, thematically Cutthroat Island is really light.

I still cannot even notice a proper villain theme, though I do register if and when the music turns properly villainous.

As themes go though, it's mostly just the main theme and occasionally the love/treasure theme.

It's still the best pirate score ever written for sheer pirateyness, but I firmly believe an even better one with the power of CI and the thematic density of Hook would blow it out of the water.

Maybe it's indeed Brian Tyler then. He recorded much of his blockbuster scores in London, particularly with the Philharmonic (The Mummy, his Marvel movies, etc).
