But then Mando's show would've been without its most effective marketing asset.

This.

Call your film The Mandolarian and nobody shows up.

Call your film The Mandolarian & Gorgu and tickets start selling like crazy.

A classic in the making.

Yeah, especially when there’s not even a character named Gorgu in the whole move. What are they trying to pull on us?!

If they wanted to sell tickets they should have called the film The Mandalorian and Barbie.

Probably would sell more dolls too.

True. It's less harsh-sounding.

This wouldn't surprise me. If we believe the gossip around Rogue One, Williams wasn't impressed with his themes being re-arranged without his supervision (hence keeping an eye over Powell's shoulder on the next film).

And after that, there's been a sharp reduction in the adaptation of JW material in Disney content. Other than brief cameos of the Force and Resistance themes in Mando, it seems only Ross was given the blessing to adapt and re-arrange JW material (in the live action shows, at least).

Remember Ross was orchestrator in Rogue one.

Serious question: how long do we think this weird vinyl renaissance is going to continue?

Posted

Yeah it's honestly ruined my score collection for CDs since now several things I wanted on CD only had vinyl releases, so I just succumbed to digital. It seems like if they have to choose between CD and vinyl these days (and can't or won't do both) they go for vinyl. Oh well.

It's been going on long enough that it can't be called a "fad" anymore. It might be here to stay.

Vinyl takes up so much space, but studios charge more for a vinyl release than a CD.

I hope for at least 50 more years!

Interesting that the score will be released before the film. I suppose it gives people the chance to hear all the music first and then see it come together in the movie - which is my preferred way of listening to scores.

I don't recall such huge marketing push when John Williams' Star Wars Sequel scores were released. Maybe I'm misremembering, but seems Lucasfilm is putting more effort into the marketing of this score than Williams'.

The scores were traditionally released before the (terrible) movies came out.

Oh, I wish we had a 1-hour-long featurette of a John Williams Star Wars score, but not even that ESB BBC documentary is that long :(

Spoiler

Quality sells itself.

Then why does almost nobody buy film scores and millions of people buy Yanni records?

Way to miss the point. The people who care already know. The people who want to know don't need to be sold. People who buy Yanni don't know or care about quality.

It's a shame we never got a Boys Noize remix of Rey's Theme with a Captain Phlasma helmet vinyl.

I think it's a matter of trying create interest in this film, as there hasn't been a Star Wars movie in almost 7 years. Film scores have been becoming more mainstream in recent years, and they're aware that 2x Oscar winner Ludwig is popular amongst the general film scene, so why not capitalize and market that they have him for the first Star Wars movie in years. All that being said, I do not understand a shoddy trap remix being the single you drop for this score, as it gives no insight to what listeners will actually hear. If they were smart, they'd drop the music from the AT-AT sequence we've seen in the marketing and at early showings, much like what Universal did with Rebirth's Boat Chase sequence (not that it was shown in theaters, but that was the big sequence that was marketed outside of the T-Rex river scene and had a single released).

After a lot of market research, focus groups and insights into Gen Z's Spotify listening habits, Disney found out people who listen to Ludwig Göransson's scores also listen to trap remixes.

They also found out people who listen to John Williams also listen to... Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Alan Silvestri and, sometimes, Hans Zimmer

I think you may be right. It’s been 50 years since the Apple II and this whole computer fad still hasn’t passed.

Every once in a while I'll be reminded "Huh, I wonder what Lucasfilm is up to!" and I'll check. They have like a dozen projects - half of which are trilogies or multi-season shows - but most of them are in the "Eh, we'll see what becomes of this" category.

Bizarre.

Box office for Prada 2 after two weeks: $433.2M ($144.8M stateside, $288.4M abroad).

It defeated the big movie of this week, Mortal Kombat 2, at the box office (mostly because of Mothers Day, but also because come on, last MK movie was dogshit and this one doesn't look to be that much better). With MK out of the way, it will have the next weekend entirely for itself before Mando premieres.

I'm pretty sure it will make over $600M before the end of its run. Maybe it can reach $700M? With a lot of boy-centric big blockbuster adventures coming out, this will be the biggest movie for females until, what, Toy Story 5? When is the next Collen Hoover adaptation coming out?

But the biggest question that interests us here (specifically @Nick1Ø66) is: can The Mandalorian & Baby Yoda reach the surprisingly huge numbers of Prada 2?

@Jay: in order not to disrupt conversation from the Mando movie, what do you think about creating a new thread just for you and Nick's bet on Prada vs Mando, and moving some posts, this one included, to there? Or you can just move them to the already existing Box Office thread.

Posted

But the entire point of the bet was disruption!

Posted

Wait, Jay took the bet? I'm off the hook? :)

Posted

No, that just means two JW affiliated charities will be getting donations. 😜

And that goes both ways, if Mando wins, I’ll donate twice. It’s all for a good cause!
