The novellas from which this show will be based on are great. The storytelling takes place on a much smaller scale than GOT and HOTD and we get to see different sides of Westeros and its people. This show can turn out really well if they get the casting right for Duncan and ‘Egg’ and if they keep it on the smaller scale of the source material and don’t try to make it into a HOTD/GOT type show.

I’m very curious how they will adapt the second novella as that story is directly related to the outcome of the Blackfyre Rebellions which I hope will be adapted in a later season of HOTD after the Dance of Dragons period is finished.

The “Game of Thrones” spinoff “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” has added seven new cast members.

Edward Ashley (“Masters of the Air”) as Ser Steffon Fossoway

Henry Ashton (“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” and “My Lady Jane”) as Daeron Targaryen

Youssef Kerkour (“House of Gucci”) as Steely Pate

Daniel Monks (Netflix’s upcoming film “Kaos”) as Ser Manfred Dondarrion

Shaun Thomas (“How to Have Sex”) as Raymun Fossoway

Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (“Avengers: Infinity War”) as Plummer

Danny Webb (HBO’s “The Regime” and “The Dig”) as Ser Arlan of Pennytree

For fans who recently finished Season 2 of “House of the Dragon,” the Daeron in “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is different than the one in the prequel series — just like how there are multiple Aegons in Westeros history.

They join stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as his squire Egg. The series, set to air next year, is set 100 years before the main “Game of Thrones” story and 100 years after the prequel “House of the Dragon.”

This really takes the sting out of waiting another 2 years for the next season of HotD. I love Dunk and Egg, bring it on!

So it appears that Dan Romer is scoring this. First time a project from ASOIAF is not scored by Djawadi.

Can't say I'm too happy about this. No idea what it's gonna sound like, but I guess we'll see. Or hear.

This is extremely disappointing news. I guess there goes the concept of thematic continuity in all of the Westeros scores. There are quite a number of themes which would have been logical to use in this show.

Big fan of Romer, hope he uses Djawadi's themes.

I enjoy Romer's music. I really like Wendy & Luca.

But his sound, to me doesn't fit with ASOIAF after Djawadi has made it his own for over 14 years.

I could very well be surprised, but right now, I don'r like it.

Posted

Well that's... disappointing. I've enjoyed some of Romer's scores, and I think he can deliver a fine score, but what I fear is that he will completely ignore all of Djawadi's themes and style.

I agree that it's such a specific sound he has crafted for this universe over the years, and it would be a shame if it was just thrown away.

Let's see how this turns out, but at least we got Season 3 of House of the Dragon to look forward to in terms of new Djawadi music for this universe.

I wouldn't say I am excited by Romer but I am definitely curious to see what he comes up with for this. He doesn't really have a define template for fantasy scoring yet.

Trailer

Finally saw this.  Looks fun.  Will be nice to have a "lighter" show in the universe compared to the "bigger" stories told in GOT and HOTD

I just watched the first episode after finishing the first novella a few days ago and I must say I really liked how it captures the smaller scale and the lighthearted tone of the story so well. The two leads are really great so far and they're really close to how I imagined them while reading. I could see some people be disappointed by the fact that "nothing happens", in the sense that is a slower story, with smaller stakes compared to GoT or HotD first episodes where many events unfold in just one episode, but I think it works to have a lighter story set in that same universe.

There were a few small changes from the book, mostly introducing some characters earlier, like the Fossoways or the extended presentation of Lyonel Baratheon which I really liked. Other than that, it's pretty much the same as the book.

As for the music, there's not a huge amount of it but I quite liked what Romer is doing here. He quotes Djawadi's main theme but only for comedic effect, and the rest is his own thing, which is also smaller in scale and more lighthearted, like for example the whistled theme that appears twice in the episode. So far nothing groundbreaking but quite solid, and I do hope he does quote more Djawadi themes than just the main theme. The episode did not allow for any of those themes, but I think the Targaryen and Baratheon themes should be a given, as well as the Honor Theme. Anyway, I really liked the end credits piece so I rip it from the episode to listen to it on its own:

Thanks for that!

Sounds like the type of thing to binge, rather than week to week. I’ll hold off until the season wraps.

Yeah, I could see it work better as a full story rather than weekly fragments, and I think that might damage the show in some of the slower episodes. In fact, I wonder if it wouldn't have been better to release it as a 3-hour movie, as the full length of the season will be somewhere near that, with six 30-minute episodes approximately.

Posted

I don't know if I'm just bored with Djawadi or what, but Romer's score has immediately captured my attention in a good way. I for one am definitely hoping for an album.

Posted

I might need some getting used to it, but I liked the first episode. I enjoyed all the characters and the production and costume design were like always impeccable. It's just didn't fully grab me yet. Excited to see what's next though.

I also, to my surprise after being very disappointed Djawadi wasn't doing it, really liked what Romer has done. The small ensemble and the whistle and violin solos were wonderful. The end credits piece was especially beautiful! Wonder if he was also responsible for the music inside the tent?

It seems that the baratheon tent music is by Djawadi as the credits state. I wonder if he has done more music for the show. And I hope more of his themes are used in the rest of the season, not just the main theme.

I thought at the time there was a bit that sounded a bit like the “Baratheon theme”

yes, listening again, I think the music playing when he first sees and enters the Baratheon tent is an adaptation of The King’s Arrival.

Looking forward to watching the first episode this evening!

If you’re looking to avoid spoilers don’t watch the “weeks ahead” trailer. It gives away a lot.

Not to be that guy, but that's actually not the Baratheon Theme but The King Theme, as it was also used for Viserys and Aegon in House of the Dragon:

The Baratheon Theme is less known as it's usually overshadowed by that theme or the Stannis/Lord of Light Theme:

I thought that the first episode was great. Having read the novellas, it really felt like a very accurate adaptation of the original text, both in terms of tone, story and some specific lines spoken and words often used in the books (on the morrow, enter the lists, mayhaps etc). The cinematography is beautiful and nicely compliments GOT and HOTD and like those two shows, the world feels lived in and not pristine and clean like in many modern fantasy shows where people often look like they just came out of the shower and have clean pressed clothes (Rings of Power and Wheel of Time for example).

The actor who plays Dunk does great as the lead character and feels  very much like the character in the novella. We haven't seen much of Egg yet but so far he has done a great job in the scenes he had. Another standout is Lyonel Baratheon who really steals the scenes he is in. Looking forward to seeing more of him for sure.

The score, what little there was, was kind of nice but weirdly felt a bit too American sounding to me. Hopefully it gets better but I am not sold yet though the end credits cue was quite pleasant. Hopefully the themes from GOT and HOTD will be used in the show when appropriate so the thematic continuity across the Westeros shows continues. The source music that Djawadi did sounded a bit like the wedding source music from HOTD S1 and I wonder if he had more involvement in the show, I guess we'll know as the season progresses.

So far off to a great start!

Yes this is one of the biggest misconceptions thematically about GOT. I think the theme was so associated with the Baratheons early on in the show as they ruled the seven kingdoms that it logically became the consensus. The King's Arrival also features Jeoffry's theme which gets used throughout the first 4 seasons of GOT.

The King Theme or Protector of the Realm theme (as I call it) also appears in Arrival at Winterfell (S8E1) and in Heir to the Throne, when Jon tells Daenerys about his Targaryen roots (S8E2).

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms 1x01 The Hedge Knight

I was not terribly impressed by this episode.  Pilot episodes are supposed to be more exciting than average, having a big exciting event to hook you into wanting to keep watching.  This didn't have that, there was no action here at all - very surprising!  I actually don't mind the idea of a slower-paced show than the existing GOT and HOTD series, and also like the idea of one that stays out of the whole "who should run the kingdom" politicing and just be the adventures of cool people.  And Dunk and Egg both seem interesting enough. But I was still shocked by how little happened in this introduction to this new slice of the world!

The best part by far was Daniel Ings (who we recently saw play a similar character in The Gentlemen) as Lyonel Baratheon - what a delight!  He was endlessly charming and I liked that I didn't know at all how he would respond to things Dunk said.  I liked they way he took a liking to Dunk, but still wouldn't vouch for him in the tourney.  I was certain the first episode would actually have the tournament and that would be the big event of the episode, and was kind of surprised when it ended after the (admittedly very nice) shooting star scene.  I guess we'll see what happens next week!

The music was subdued but nice.  As has been pointed out, the end credits music was very lovely.

I really enjoyed the first episode, with some really nice character moments (and Lyonel Baratheon absolutely stole the show).

I was surprised by how much I was enjoying the music while watching the episode, (as I never was, at all, a fan of what Djawadi did for the other shows set in this world), only to find out it wasn't composed by Djawadi. What a pleasant surprise that was.

I'm on board with the show

What does everyone here think of the opening poop scene?

I get what they were going for, juxtaposing his intentions to be a great hero with a smash cut to him having explosive diarrhea to kind of signal that this show won't be what you might think it is.  But I think scoring it with the actual Game of Thrones theme instead of a more generic heroic cue was just too on the nose and actually distracted from the intentions, because it takes you out of the show and into the real world.

Sounds like GOT too me.
