If you wanted final confirmation that Matt Reeves' The Batman would be existing outside of James Gunn's DC Universe (DCU), you finally have it.

 

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reeves revealed that he and his  producing partner Dylan Clark refer to their Batman universe as the 'Batman Epic Crime Saga.'

 

The universe began with Robert Pattinson's 2022, underrated superhero origin tale and will continue with HBO's  The Penguin, which will hit HBO in September.

 

Reeves was also developing an Arkham television spin-off that surprisingly was revealed to be set within Gunn's DCU before the project was ultimately canceled.

 

"As we were writing the movie [The Batman], I was like, 'Hey, you know what? I think there are some cool shows that we could do," Reeves  told EW. "It was actually why I wanted to make our deal at Warner Bros."

 

According to Reeves, HBO execs told him that they wanted him to lean into the marquee characters more. As a result, the Arkham series was nixed and elements of a separate, Gotham PD spin-off, were folded into The Penguin.

 

With the first film releasing on March 4, 2022, that means there will be a four-year gap between theatrical installments. However, Reeves went on to explain that The Penguin picks up one week after where The Batman leaves off, and then leads directly into the sequel.  

 

"It’s a Scarface story. It’s a rise-to-power story of Oz before he really makes it to the top," said showrunner Lauren LeFranc. He added, "We’re living in the underbelly of the city. Oz is a mover and a shaker. He can’t always be trusted. He’s very smart and very methodical, but he’s also extremely impulsive. You can’t predict what he’s going to do."

 

LeFranc  went on to describe the series as the bridge that connects the two films, "We are the bridge between the two films,” LeFranc reveals, referring to The Batman and Reeves’ sequel, slated for 2026. “We’re going almost directly into the second film Matt has planned.”

Watched the first episode.

 

I liked it, although I thought it was a bit slow. The opening was good, in the way it linked it to the events of The Batman. Then the whole episode felt a bit meandering to me.

The final 10 minutes were a lot better I thought and retroactively made the episode as a whole better.

 

It still amazes me that it's Colin Farrell. He truly is unrecognisable and is fantastic here.

Cristin Milioti was the other standout for me. Really strong presence and I liked the vibe of her character.

I'm a bit tired of Clancy Brown playing the same character over and over again though.

 

Giacchino's music was good. The opening minutes felt like it was tracked music from The Batman, but it could've been newly recorded. The episode is sparsely scored, in a good way. When the music comes in with the slashing strings it's really effective. Excited to hear what he does with the entire season.

This is a reason I'm kinda bored with current "prestige dramas" shows, they all feel very meandering and way too slow. Almost like they don't have enough material for a whole season so they make each episode super slow.

 

Hopefully the next episodes will be more eventful.

To be honest, pacing felt fine to me. I don't need a breakneck tempo in a crime drama.

 

As for the score, it serves the series well enough. I appreciate that it lives in a similar sonic world to The Batman. Both Batman and Riddler themes make an appearance.

Am I watching the right show? I heard he was in a fat suit in this, but this guy looks legitimately fat, unless it's just really impressive prosthetics. Brendan Fraser was also in a fat suit in The Whale. It seems Hollywood has its diversity limits when it comes to fat guys. And where the hell is Batman?

It's a show so embarrassed by the source material that it couldn't even keep the main character's name intact, and somehow thought that "Oz Cobb" sounded less silly than "Oswald Cobblepot".

Just watched episode one.

Liked it more than the deadly dull movie.

Well paced and acted with a hard edge not seen in previous DC products.

It's not a comic book and doesn't feature Batman but I'll stick with it based on episode one

The first two episodes were really good but the the next two were even better. I am actually quite surprised just how good this series turned out to be, mostly thanks to fleshing out the secondary characters of Sofia Falcone and Victor. Cristin Milioti absolutely steals every scene.

Can someone explain to me what’s the deal with deconstructing characters created for cartoons in the 1940s like this? First the Joker, and now the Penguin—damn, it has nothing to do with the characters we know. It’s not just deconstruction; it’s crap. These are just ordinary stories, and we idiots sit there waiting for the slightest little reference to the characters we know... and it never happens. What a low-level form of entertainment.

They're not creative enough to make new characters, so they pilfer old ones and give them a few new twists. Plus name recognition hooks people in.
