R.I.P Dan Wallin

I'm not an expert on sound engineers' particular sounds and quirks, so wouldn't immediately be able to separate between a Shawn Murphy and Dennis Sands and Dan Wallin. I know that many others do. That being said, Wallin has been one of those names I've seen on soundtrack releases for what feels like forever. Certainly a legend in the field, and 97 is incredibly good innings! RIP.

Without puffing myself up too much, I'm pretty sure that I can tell the difference between the sounds of Armin Steiner, Shawn Murphy, Ted Keep, John Neal, Dan Wallin, and Bruce Botnick.

In much the same way, I can tell whether something is Trevor Horn, George Martin, Roy Thomas Baker, Todd Rundgren, Martin Rushent, Steve Lillywhite, Daniel Lanois, or Phil Spector.

It comes from a lifetime of listening to, and studying, recorded music.

It’s a shame to hear about his passing. But a lot of the scores I heard that he mixed in the past 15 years prior to his retirement sounded small or dry — like Mercenaries and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.

The Incredibles sounded great, among other ones.
