Jay 45,151 Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 Very nice obituary by Jon Burlingame, with some nice words from Giacchino https://variety.com/2024/film/news/dan-wallin-dead-music-mixer-1235966619/ Manakin Skywalker 1
Naïve Old Fart 12,666 Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 R.I.P., Mr. Wallin, and thank you for all that you have done, for film music.
Popular Post karelm 3,259 Posted April 11, 2024 Popular Post Posted April 11, 2024 Damn! I remember him on my Lost scoring sessions. They were all top notch, and I didn't realize how great they were. Emil Richards literally proudly showed me his custom percussion instruments that he identified as being made from airplane parts. In the booth was Dan Wallin who was a true professional. Focused and mixing in near real time. Our session was just three hours and he had it mixed live. Superfast to keep us on time and budget. He was a true pro. RIP. Andy 7,139 Posted April 11, 2024 Posted April 11, 2024 Omega Man is one of my favorite recordings ever. Rest in Peace. Yavar Moradi 1
Thor 9,334 Posted April 11, 2024 Posted April 11, 2024 I'm not an expert on sound engineers' particular sounds and quirks, so wouldn't immediately be able to separate between a Shawn Murphy and Dennis Sands and Dan Wallin. I know that many others do. That being said, Wallin has been one of those names I've seen on soundtrack releases for what feels like forever. Certainly a legend in the field, and 97 is incredibly good innings! RIP. Naïve Old Fart 1
Corellian2019 482 Posted April 13, 2024 Posted April 13, 2024 Rest in power. He mixed three of my favorites: 48 HRS, RoboCop 2, and The Fugitive Naïve Old Fart 1

Without puffing myself up too much, I'm pretty sure that I can tell the difference between the sounds of Armin Steiner, Shawn Murphy, Ted Keep, John Neal, Dan Wallin, and Bruce Botnick. In much the same way, I can tell whether something is Trevor Horn, George Martin, Roy Thomas Baker, Todd Rundgren, Martin Rushent, Steve Lillywhite, Daniel Lanois, or Phil Spector. It comes from a lifetime of listening to, and studying, recorded music.
Naïve Old Fart 12,666 Posted April 13, 2024 Posted April 13, 2024 Thanks, @Thor As I said: it comes from a lifetime of listening to music, getting to know what "sound" producers choose to employ. To respectfully disagree with my illustrious JWfaner, I am not a genius, I merely have a "good ear".
Matt C 572 Posted May 23, 2024 Posted May 23, 2024 It’s a shame to hear about his passing. But a lot of the scores I heard that he mixed in the past 15 years prior to his retirement sounded small or dry — like Mercenaries and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. The Incredibles sounded great, among other ones.
Popular Post JodiVanLove 8 Posted April 4, 2025 Popular Post Posted April 4, 2025 I love reading all of these accolades for Dan Wallin. He was my grandfather. My own son is very interested in music and sound. We have speakers he made and they still sound amazing. We're going to see John Williams tonight at Disney concert hall. My mom met John a few times and I would love the chance to shake his hand! crumbs, Jim Ware and Jay 3
