John Williams canceled concerts 2024

After the SW sequels I basically made peace with the fact that JW may not be with us much longer. Anything after those I consider a bonus in what I’d describe as the epilogue of his career.

Best case scenario he’s just tinkering around on the piano for the next few months.

...because Steven has asked him to do so for his next film and scoring always comes first.

Unfortunately we all know the day is going to come when Williams is no longer with us.

Let’s enjoy the fact that he is still with us and as mentioned in a previous post, keep him in your thoughts, prayers and well wishes.

I would also encourage and say, people should continue to do things that they enjoy as long as they are physically and mentally able to do so.

Don’t live your golden years stuck inside because of other issues. Take precautions to stay healthy but don’t shutter your life.

I watched my vibrant 80+ year old mother become a shell of herself when she was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s and just gave up when she had several good years ahead of her to still enjoy what she loved.

How on earth is that "best case scenario"? American concert hall composer Elliot Carter lived to be almost 104, 12 years older than Williams is right now... and he stayed active composing until just a few months before his death. His last completed work was a piano trio piece called Epigrams, which he finished on August 13, 2012, before passing away on November 5, 2012.

Nobody's saying Williams has to keep writing large scale orchestral works. Miklos Rozsa famously stopped writing orchestral works after his Viola Concerto and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid... but he still kept composing smaller chamber works for another 7 years afterwards, up through the end of the 1980s (eventually passing away half a decade after he apparently stopped composing).

I’m so sorry…

I think he means the "best case scenario" while he recuperates from whatever ailment he has right now.

So, yes, I remain confident all will be well, and come end of February I will be engaged in a desperate no-holds-barred fight to secure tickets to JW/BPO.

Let's hope. But honestly, after this announcement, I'm not sure I can entertain the notion of going to Europe anymore.

I think my days of travelling from Ireland to the US for JW concerts are over. That travel is a significant cost but the risk is too high now that the concert might be cancelled.

His European concerts are different though because I can spend a day or two in Berlin / Vienna fairly cheaply from Dublin.

There is one piece that he has finished writing and recording with YoYoMa. We at least have that to absorb and love.

I definitely don’t want to speculate, but your posts do seem a bit ominous.

They do indeed. @ocelot is frankly freaking me out with each post.   I’m sure he means well, but it’s messing with my head.

I'm sorry guys. I don't mean to be. I'm not sure how else to put anything.

No one thought that Milan was ever going to happen when it was cancelled but it did in the end.

Without mentioning any private or confidential information, are you privy to information not released to the public or are your posts based only on your speculation?

I had a nagging worry in the back of my mind up until Williams stepped onstage at Tanglewood last year, and New York in February—neither of which involved a transatlantic flight... I'd probably be on pins and needles waiting for him to take the stage in Berlin.

On the other hand, it would be the best gift, since my birthday is just a few days earlier.

Decisions, decisions...

I just know how I would be if I didn't know so I was attempting to say it's more than is thought of on here, but that's where I then step in it. Sorry. I will not say anymore xox

Nothing to apologize for. Speaking for myself, I'm naturally concerned, and curious to know the severity of the situation, but I fully appreciate that it's a personal matter.

I'll just do as you said earlier, and keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

If whatever happened is bad, it's bad. Cancelling an October concert in June sounds pretty bad. But they are telling us full recovery is expected and so while I know as well as anyone that "expected" is not the same thing as "guaranteed," I'm just gonna take that at face value and hope for the best.

If they could guarantee recovery, then whoever "they" are would be trillionaires.

So now everyone is upset because of a cryptic poster I never heard of.

/gasp! How dare you not know who I am!!!! I've been here since the stone age.....

Again, sorry about that, I live in LA, I am a composer, word travels fast underground from players on sessions through composers we know etc etc.

The only LA composer I know is Brian Tyler who messaged me on FB years ago rather pathetically referencing Star Trek DS9.

We are a dime a dozen here, but it was said as a joke either way, lol, it's not like I am scoring movies, only my friends, family and industry people know me. Relax. If you are upset about the news, it's understandable, we all are.

I know Tyler’s a big Trekkie, but how does one pathetically reference DS9, exactly?

Judging by the footage I saw of of a certain world leader getting off a plane yesterday and trying to negotiate a welcome party without looking like he'd been recently revivified, JW is doing very well indeed for someone 11 years older. His only 'moments' seem to be when trying to recall something he clearly doesn't care about, like which episode number ESB is.

And the humid heat in Tokyo (while dressed in a black turtleneck under a white jacket) plus the jet-lag apparently made him look older than usual.

I just talked to a very famous film composer whom I won’t name, who said that he doesn’t know what’s going on with JW, either. It could either mean that he really doesn’t know or just as well that he doesn’t want to share it out of respect for JW’s privacy. If it’s the latter, that’s exactly what I would do, too.
In either case, let’s just wait and hope for the best.

I would not expect other film composers to just know what is going on with JW at any given moment, major or not. I doubt JW maintains a besties text chain lol

It’s not how it works. The film composer I talked to, more than likely knows.

You’ve literally just said they do not know lol. In my opinion, they coulda said no comment if they didn’t wanna share private info.

It wouldn't surprise me that the specific reason for JW cancelling these dates is making its way through the grapevine of the film and music industries, but that in itself can be very suspect.
