Dead Friends

How many people you've known for years? Have developed friendships with online that developed and last, like life does?

Very often not from around.

 

There's 2, maybe 3 people ive known for years and lost contact with in a way I now assume they may not be around anymore.

 

Joeinar was the first person i was genuinely close to who i now know has died.

 

Anyone have anything like this? Not just in film music, but online friends/extended family?

I have a good friend to whom I owe my participation as a consultant on the Aznavour projects over the past 10 years. We must have known each other for 25 years, yet we have never met in person. He is in Paris, and I am in Quebec. A few years ago, another essential collaborator joined us from Israel. Our international trio has become essential to any major project involving Charles Aznavour, as the material is too complex for Universal France to handle. It's quite a unique friendship; I don't have any other examples like it!

 

So no dead Friends for the moment, not that I'm aware.

There is something rather eerie about knowing someone on the net and then one day they stop posting and they're gone. I used to have correspondence with the guy who ran the 1976 King Kong fansite in the late 90s/early 2000s and suddenly it was posted on the site that he'd passed away. There's still a thank you to me on the main page which has never been taken down. All these posts will be lost in time.

Back in my early web days in the early 2000s, I befriended a young bloke from Iowa on the Jedi Council Forums. Funny young fella. I remember he said he imagined I lived in a rickety old shack in the desert and threw boomarangs. The lead-up to AOTC was fun with him around. Suddenly he stopped posting. It was brought to my attention later he was deployed to Iraq, so I gather he might have been killed in action? Nobody else at the forum knew either.

I didn't do anything. Everyone is expected to follow all the same rules equally, no one is treated differently. Drax chose not to follow the rules.  Repeatedly. It's sad, really.

Even a month is too long. Just leave Drax alone. The quote rule is insane and flat out anti-JWFan. One of the reasons I first viewed this forum is because it had guys quoting Star Trek and Batman Returns, which I'd never seen before. No, quotes should not be limited to one thread. You're irrationally annoyed by them. Everyone likes them.

 

When Drax and I returned we immediately become the most-liked content on the forum. The people have decided.

I’m gonna have to disagree.  Look, we all do quotes. When used sparingly, they’re funny. Like your next post after this.  But when you guys ping pong them back and forth to spam the place up… I dunno. It feels like I’m in a bad Kevin Smith movie.

You were correct in that he was indeed banned for a year, initially. Jay was also correct when he said that he is now banned for a month. We both discussed the reasons and final length of the ban before it was applied.

I'm gonna have to disagree. I love the quotes. The more frequently they're used, the funnier they are.  Especially when we ping pong them back and forth and spam the place up. I dunno, it makes me feel like I'm a good Quentin Tarantino movie.

my apologies.

 

 

There was a gentleman I would email, who was a huge Godzilla fan, he even wrote a book and had been planing on a second edition he was going to send me a copy of. 
 

he was also a huge Goldsmith fan and also posted at FSM. I hadn’t received an email from him in awhile and found out thru one of the Godzilla message boards he had unexpectedly passed away at a young age.

 

About 3-4 years ago, I re-connected online with a bunch of my comrades from the military. One in particular was my old drinking buddy from the time I was stationed overseas. He always posted daily on Facebook. 
 

He was a few years older than me. His last post was 2021 Opening day for baseball. He had gotten tickets. I realized he hadn’t posted anything for awhile so I checked and found out he never made it to the game. He passed away shortly after he made that post.

 

Last fall my mom’s cousin passed away. I had become friends with her on Facebook when my mom was battling her Alzheimer’s and kept her updated on the situation . After mom passed we remained in touch. I realized she hadn’t posted in awhile found out thru one her children she passed away unexpectedly.

A friend of mine died today. Saw it on facebook. Heart attack. Same age as me, 52.  I met him on a message board about toy collecting.  After a while, he gave me a phone call and we became phone buddies. We would have long phone conversations about monsters, movies, Masters of the Universe, toys, cartoons, Bigfoot, comics… the important stuff. But somehow through those trivial things I got to know a great man with an enormous heart, incredible gifts of talent, and unconditional generosity. 
 

He was incredibly talented. I have artwork he sent me framed and on my wall.  I have figure models he painted for me, just because he wanted to, never asking for a dime in return.  I have antique toys he sent me, fresh out of their sealed package, because that’s how he liked his toys… to be played with and enjoyed.  I have a mint Batman coloring book he gifted me, just because he knew I had it as a child.  Surely, I will never forget him. I will see his art, or the toys that he loved, and think of him fondly and often. But I am sad I will never see his name come up on my phone when it rings again.  That’s the kind of guy he was. Always the one to reach out with a phone call.  I miss him already.   Gone too soon.

I had a similar friend (we met at work 21 years ago), who died two years ago.

I still miss him like a sonofabitch.

Cherish your memories. Never forget him, and what he meant to you.
