Holdo's theme from TLJ deserves more

Recommended Posts

Very nice theme.  Not sure why he didn't make a concert version.  He confuses me on that score often.  Qui-Gon's theme also begs for a concert version.  At least in that case of TPM, he already had several concert pieces.

Now that I am thinking about it, I hear a bit of Qui-Gon's theme in Holdo's.  Weird.

I hear the similarities in both themes as well. The little driving rhythm in the strings of Qui-Gon's theme are very similar to the propulsive brass of Holdo's theme.

I first read “Holko’s Theme” in the title. I thought: Wow, @Holko now has a theme? :)

Hey @HolkoCan’t you lighten up a bit, or is it just Sunday morning and you are sleepy? I was just kidding, why are you such a grumpy bear? :)

That’s because it’s the same first few notes. Same with the Obi-Wan Kenobi show theme, the Ludlow motif, etc.

Based on experience, I get the impression this isn't the first time he's been told that

It never occurred to me. He doesn't particularly like me, so he must've thought I was deliberately teasing him. I wasn't. This time. Hehehe

(No, seriously, I wasn't. When I saw the thread title, I accidentally read his name, and since he is so into custom made edits, I thought he might also write music.)

I really like when Holdo's theme appears here:

I'm thankful at least TLJ has the iso score to compensate for the unreleased material from the OST and FYC. It's always so sad when a theme gets misrepresented on the official release.

It starts of like the force theme and I always wondered, what does Holdo have to do with the force?

Are you talking about the Resistance March theme in the 2nd half of the clip? I don't hear Holdo's theme in this video, but maybe I'm missing it.

It’s literally the first notes of the track. It’s a very subtle statement. I didn’t notice it for a long time either.

Damn, not sure how I missed that--strikingly similar.  Anthem of Evil Holdo.

Anybody else think Holdo’s theme bears similarities in construction to Anthem of Evil? Here are a few excerpts from the OST:

TLJ Finale:

TLJ Chrome Dome:

TROS Anthem of Evil:

TROS Anthem of Evil:

TROS Finale:

I think the resemblance is mainly due to the fact that both are constructed atop a static bassline/harmony, and the contour of the melody is similar across both themes (leaping, using similar intervals). I really like both!

The Obi Wan theme also opens similarly imo. I feel like the opening gesture of these themes is one Williams has seemingly become enamored with in his late period.

Yes, in fact the opening phrase of the Obi-Wan theme is identical to the TLJ Resistance escape motif (or whatever it is called) and very similar to a motif from The Post. Others have already mentioned how similar ideas can be heard in earlier scores like The Lost World (Ludlow’s End), TPM (Qui-Gon’s theme) and Philosopher’s Stone (The Quidditch Match).
