It's definitely an interesting pick. I certainly appreciated how varied Nope was in its sound, even if the standout track was one that he'd already written years prior:

Oo he's got orchestral chops, that could bode well indeed

I love Abels' BAD EDUCATION, but his scores for the Peele films don't ignite me much (neither do the films themselves, for that matter). Will be interesting to see what he brings to the STAR WARS table.

I still really dig the original 10+ min concert piece which is on YouTube (the same performance Jordan Peele ran across, apparently!)

So awesome.

My favorite new music in Nope is honestly his Morricone western homage...one of the very best I have ever heard.

New clip, which features our first chance to hear a bit of Abels' score.

Oh hell yes, I like what I'm hearing. Sounds like it's going to be traditional Star Wars orchestral with some more percussive flavours which I actually enjoyed quite a bit. Weirdly enough it reminds me a bit of James Horner's score for Aliens, I'm glad to be reminded of some older compositions for a change with these shows though!

let's hope we have someone who respects the source material and does not want to improvise a new sound just because.

Not totally convinced by that clip - a bit synthesised perhaps? Could also still be temptracking or AI. Whatever, but Abels is able to do anything. He is like one of those great 90s composers that people like Schumacher would hire (Goldenthal!) and they were let loose to do idiosyncratic stuff and fans would have to wait to hear what it all sounds like - fucking miss those days.

Abels with Peele has been a bit like that - love all the work they do together, and can't wait for Abels to do his magic with Star Wars (let's hope he gets to do it!!).

Oh, and Nope has probably the best Morricone homage of all time - the melody is amazing

Is there no soundtrack release for the show yet? Not even for the first two episodes? I want to listen to the music more closely.

Well considering the show has been out for not even 4 hours, no.

It will likely receive an album after the show has concluded.

Either 1 album after the finale.

Or 2, whith the first releasing after episode 4 and the secind after the finale. That's how it works with Disney+ series.

What I found neat is it seems like each End Credits is a unique suite of music, possibly from the episode itself

Yes, that's really cool. Abels' music was really strong.

I wonder if we'll get to hear some Williams' reference at some point?

I certainly thought I heard at least one in what little I watched.

Which one are you referring to? I watched both episodes and I didn't pick up any Williams' material, but I could have certainly missed it.

Roughly at the 15 minute 20 seconds mark.

Can't quite place it in the Williams canon - maybe in The Force Awakens? - but to my ears its definitely hearkening back to his scores.

In case anyone wants to hear Abels' score out of the show, I quickly ripped the music for the end credits of both episodes, which seem to be made out of several separate sections from the underscore of each episode. So far I caught a couple of recurring themes, I think associated with Osha and her sister respectively!

I wonder if we'll get to hear some Williams' reference at some point? In case it happens it'll probably be the Force theme as it's the only logical theme in the timeline. Perhaps Yoda's theme in case he makes a cameo (which I doubt, but who knows)

That sounds pretty decent actually.

Funny to hear mystery theme from AOTC (or something very close to it) in the second video.

By the way, some general comments feom Abels regarding the score:

Not sure if anyone else has noticed, but the credit music seems to primarily consist of various cues from throughout the episodes edited together. There's little to no original material written for the credits depending on the episode (for example I *think* the very opening of Episode 1's credits are unique, but everything else is just music tracked from elsewhere in the episode).

Which I suppose is a good thing, in case any of these cues end up being unreleased on an official album.

The Ascension Ceremony… Oh boy. It’s not as godawful without the actors “singing” in a completely different key over the top, but it’s still messy and awkward.

As I will not be watching the show, I hope that I can actually enjoy the rest of the score. From the bits and pieces I’ve heard, and the discussion on the forum surrounding it, it sounds promising.

I've gone through the Volume 1 soundtrack release and put together a spreadsheet if anyone is interested in a breakdown:

I'm so confused by these composer credits. If they're to be believed, not a single track was written by Michael Abels, not even the theme suite?

He didn't get sole credit on any of the tracks, just 'Main Artist', but that doesn't mean none of his cues were included, although it does make it hard to tell which tracks he actually wrote on. Which track is supposed to be a theme suite?

Oh I just assumed Bazil's Theme was a suite based on the name and the fact you couldn't find it in any of the episodes. It's possible it is an actual cue, like "Ezra's Theme" on the old Rebels albums

Is anyone else unable to see a "purchase" button for the soundtrack on any website? It's showing as streaming only on Qobuz and iTunes. That has to be an error, right?

I can’t even see the album on the iTunes Store at all.  Last time I saw something like this happen was Doctor Strange 2, where they ended up adding a few spoilery tracks before they finally put it up for sale a few weeks later.
