ssMusic 15 Posted March 5 Posted March 5 I think the beginning of "Witches Get Snitches" from Wicked: For Good might be a reference to Stravinsky - specifically The Rite Of Spring. The other Stravinsky reference, is anytime when The Flying Monkey's theme played (in Monkey Mayhem) and the action part of (Lies In The Sky), where the xylophone is playing along with the orchestra, which I think might be alluding to the moments in The Firebird, when the music goes full chaos. There is a moment in Monkey Mayhem, where the brass directly "steal" a dissonant chord from The Firebird. "Cages, Chaos, and Cake" also has something so familiar about it but I haven't been able to figure it out yet. Maybe its the fact that it sounds like a scherzo that just happens to be close to three minutes instead of 30 minutes. Also, I heard somewhere that the choir was singing Latin during this (and during some other pieces as well) Can any of you confirm if this is the case? Because it does sound like Powell's choir is singing lyrics in the second film's score, as opposed to the wordless choir for the majority of Part One. I really think that what Powell (and Schwartz) - but mostly Powell, have built with this score is a two- movement Symphony that just happens to be hidden under a blockbuster musical. The only part I didn't like about the scores is the "Suite" in Wicked: For Good's credits, because it was overly triumphant - but that's probably some studio executive at Universal seeing the fans cheer for the "banger songs" like "No Good Deed" - and forcing Powell to write something equally flooded with maximum volume to give them an "epic sendoff" - and Powell probably decided to insult Universal by providing maximum loudness, yet making it intentionally hallow and devoid of emotion. (like the loud brass chords towards the end of "The Rise Of Glinda") - that was my only problem with Wicked: For Good's score - which was otherwise flawless. Also, the fact that Wicked: For Good got zero nominations after the first one got 10 is insulting. It was probably because the Academy thought that KPop Demon Hunters had "better music" and I really don't understand how that film became the hit that it is. Do any of you know how "Golden" got nominated for an Oscar, while Marcelo Zarvo's score was deemed ineligible for awards consideration? (For me, Zarvos's score was the only good part of the movie) - which if any one of you want to talk about scores written for films that were never designed for them, that would be one to start with. (I know that is off topic for this thread, but I would love to hear your thoughts on that score, if you noticed it). Trope 1

In case anyone wants it, I made a sequential stitched-back-together instrumental album for both movies: - This was made just for my own listening pleasure but I decided to share since it was a lot of work - I think this film is a master class in collaboration (between Schwartz, Powell, Wells, Oremus, Amendum, Atmajian, Nelson, and more) - the motifs are so attended to, so narratively specific, and the stitching from score to song and back and forth is mastercraft (esp from Powell) - I also really love seeing where orchestration style between Atmajian and Powell are similar and divergent). - Generally, there are no 'soundtrack vocals' - no sung leads, and no ensemble vocals (though see below). I left in choral vocals from Powell's score though, as they felt more a part of the orchestration than foreground. - There are mistakes, sorry. - Because they didn't take out the ensemble vocals and spoken dialogue in the Singalong album, there's places I do cut to a fan vocals-removed recording - but I try to keep this to a minimum and crossfade smoothly - There's a few places where I couldn't grab clean music from the film's 6-mono-WAV channels when certain small music segments didn't appear on either album - in some places, I -did- grab music segments but they came with some SFX or whispers of dialogue that I didn't remove - I did a better job on Part 2 than 1 I think. - Powell's internal and nesting material is back inside and around the songs in almost all places. - I missed that Lust and Betrayal had an alternate accompaniment for I'm Not That Girl! I doubt he had a hand in writing the score, might have just shared an idea and that's what is represented in the cues' credits. The differences between album and film versions might be those ideas.

Jay 45,648 Posted Saturday at 02:31 PM Posted Saturday at 02:31 PM Cool, I'll find out when I get to it!
Popular Post ssMusic 15 Posted yesterday at 12:57 AM Popular Post Posted yesterday at 12:57 AM The beginning of this piece is very Powell and I am all for it. (It sounds exactly like something out of HTTYD). But the ending of this is everything. The way the massive orchestra just in the span of a couple minutes gets quieter and slower and the instrumentation is reduced to strings, a piano, a celesta, and a fading choir in the background. And that's what gets us into the song, "For Good" - the culmination of 5 hours worth of score. That alone deserves some recognition. And then there is the beginning of "For Good" with the oboe playing Defying Gravity. And of course, the final coda to "For Good"- "Into The Closet" - which is still to me the most beautiful piece in the entire score. (In fact both films to me worth it for that moment alone.) - and its interesting to think that we almost never got the most beautiful piece of music to ever come out of 2025. I do hope that as time goes on, more people begin to understand that what John Powell and Stephen Schwartz did on these two films is incredible and that the Wicked scores will be as regarded as anything by John Williams.
