The movie is 81% on Rotten Tomatoes as of right now, with 148 reviews published, being 120 Fresh and 28 Rotten. The rating is 7.10 out of 10.

However, with the Top Critics (which account for 39 reviewers) the movie only has a 64% Tomatometer, with an average rating of 6 out of 10.

In other words: professional critics liked it less than the others (which include a lot of nerd-oriented fan blogs).

I'm probably one of the latter🤣 and I loved it!

What critics think and what I think about a film is becoming more and more at odds with each other these days. I feel like in general there is more negativity towards films coming out these days. And to me as someone who is just trying to enjoy oneself it's really annoying sometimes.

It's not like the "evil critics are trying to destroy popular movies" conspiracy theory (I've been on the internet for way too long to see this happening numerous times).

Sure, there may be some snob jerks here and there.  But the vast majority of professional film reviewers treat every movie with respect and open mind, whether it's a Marvel blockbuster or an arthouse independent film.

The Top Critics gave a 93% Tomatometer with a 7.7 rating for Avengers Endgame and a 90% with a 7.4 rating to Spiderman: No Way Home. Scorsese or not, most Marvel movies (and shows) are met with positive reviews.

So the problem is not with a supposed hatred of critics towards the MCU, but rather with Deadpool & Wolverine. I've read quite a bit of reviews, whether from superhero fan blogs to "prestige" outlets and they all seem to agree that the story of the movie is paper thin and cliche, but there's a lot of cameos and fan service, "a love letter to Fox" (which Scott Mendelson compared to a serial killer eulogizing his victims)...

For the fans, all of those cameos seem to be enough to compensate for the movie's flaws, but professional film critics can't be faulted for wanting something more. Otherwise, cinema will be reduced to a nostalgia fest of bringing back old actors from movies that remind people of better times.

And again: No Way Home had cameos and fan service galore and was acclaimed because it remembered to tell a decent and coherent story.

There are some points I agree with there, the plot is indeed on the simple side, but there are so many fantastic films with a simple plot: Jurassic Park, Die Hard among others.

What I thought was so great about this film was the character work on both Deadpool and Wolverine. Each of them has a good arc with ups and downs. It really works.

You have all the nostalgia stuff surrounding it and the cameos (which honestly are more supporting roles. These characters are around for quite a while and also have a real meaning to them), but if you take all that away still have a really great buddy road trip film so to speak with excellent action etc that just happens to feature these 2 comic book characters.

I don't think a lot more is expected and needed from a film that features Deadpool. That was more the point I was trying to make. Some critics are looking at it like it should be the new awards frontrunner and judging it that way, which makes no sense to me. If it's not for you, that's of course completely fine.

This film is made with a clear purpose: to entertain! And it does so in spades.

For those who saw the movie or heard the OST album: how is the score? Is it more orchestral or more rock or electronic oriented? Does it feature references to older Marvel scores?

Themes from past films present are Silvestri's Avengers theme & Beltrami's Main Titles from Logan

Thanks. Considering the cameos I was low key hoping for references to

Spoiler

John Ottman's X-Men theme and maybe his theme for the 2000s F4.

But maybe they wouldn't make sense in the context of the movie.

Spoiler

Ottman's X-Men theme has no place in this film because none of the cameos have anything to do with that. Fantastic Four would've been nice though

Loved the movie and the score.

Spoiler

I particularly loved the use of the “Logan” Main Titles when his death from that movie is shown to Wade. Got me so pumped.

Suppose they could have quoted his Pyro theme but that wouldn't fit tonally.

Apart from the LFG theme (which works excellently in the film), I found the score to be rather unlistenable.

I was disappointed with the D&W score too. I kinda expected Simonsen to

Spoiler

quote more thematic material from other Fox Marvel films, like John Ottman’s F4 and X-Men scores (or even Beltrami’s Blade theme from New Line).

The usage of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” (particularly the choral refrain) works really well in the climax of the film. Not surprised she was at the premiere.

I wasn't planning on seeing this movie (at least not in theaters). I already know most of the plot, the cameos and etc., because it all seemed like silly movie with lots of jokes that only those who follow religiously superhero movie news would get (I am one of those but still), cringe-y fourth wall breaks and cameos to fill the runtime...

But then I saw this video and my perspective over the movie has entirely changed. It might not be a masterpiece, but its goals are far more noble and less silly than I thought. I recommend everyone who watched it, or who is planning to watch but doesn't care about spoilers, to see it:

As someone mentioned in the comments:

Avengers Endgame, a celebration of the entire MCU

Spider-Man No Way Home, an appreciation to Sony’s legacy on Spider-Man

Deadpool and Wolverine, a tribute to the Marvel Fox era

The strongest part of Deadpool & Wolverine was Hugh Jackman and several cameos in particular (one spoiled in the final trailer) that made it work. Jackman was able to probe Logan’s psyche in different ways without sacrificing the integrity of Logan’s ending (particularly the campfire scene).

The most disappointing part was Ryan Reynolds (more annoying than funny like  the previous two films) and Emma Corrin. Although some of the zingers did land (especially one involving a certain cameo), Deadpool is still middling. Corrin felt rather bland as the villain and was cast because they resembled both Patrick Stewart and James McIvoy.
