Benjamin Wallfisch's TWISTERS (2024)

Recommended Posts

The score album for TWISTERS is finally out on streaming. I enjoyed the movie when I saw it last month but didn't remember anything specific about the score, been looking forward to giving it a proper listen. Halfway through and I'm liking it so far. Plenty of vamping in the action beats but I'm digging the texture, as well as the variety in tones and instrumentation. Haven't come across any strong melodies to grab onto yet, but Wallfisch seems to have a bit more range than some of his fellow RCP, looking forward to hearing his take on Alien. What do you all think?

As I said in another thread, I was disappointed in this score. It was fairly anonymous RCP tropes and the like, and a far, far cry from Mancina's brilliant original. Which is a shame, because I'm a fan of both Wallfisch and the original film. I look forward to seeing it, though, because it's gotten good feedback.

My expectations for his ALIEN work is much, much higher.

I unfortunately came away from the film not remember much of anything from the score. I feel like the sound effects definitely won out on this one.

Whatever was there - I didn't notice it. Gonna give it a chance on Album and hopefully I'll pick up on it next time I see it.

Mark Mancina's score for the original by contrast was instantly memorable when I first saw the movie. I'll find out soon if it was mainly the mixing or if there just wasn't as much for me to latch on to.

I say that too also as a fan of Wallfisch.

I enjoyed the film itself by the way. Not as special as the original, but I appreciate that it didn't try to rely too hard on nostalgia and let itself be its own thing that has more spiritual connections vs overt references to the first one.

UPDATE: Nothing really stood out to me for the first few tracks, but I perked up when I got to "She Told Us East". I'm liking this one!

There's a few fun tracks here in the middle so far. I found myself liking "After the Storm" as well.

I’ve given it a once over. It’s ok. There are some good moments but I’m not sure if I’ll return to it anytime soon.

Like Thor, I feel the only thing this score has done for me is further my appreciation for Mancina’s original.

Were there any media drippings that revealed why he didn’t return?

I’ve not yet seen the new film but I understand it’s rather a loose sequel, so perhaps a musical connection with the original is less pertinent.

Still would have been good though, to have Mancina on board. I genuinely miss him.

Having said that, I do like his Moana score so it’s not like I’m losing or anything.

I listened to it yersterday. It was probably one of the summer's scores I was looking forward the most because I appreciate Wallfisch's music. He wrote what was unironically one of my favorite scores from the last summer with The Flash and Twisters seemed like it would be as fun as that score.

What I like about Wallfisch is that he, as someone who worked as a conductor before, adds a lot more color, textures and orchestral grandeur to his music than, say, Lorne Balfe. The Flash has some great orchestrations and Twisters is no different. I liked the piano and strings music for the tornadoes and the rather Thomas Newman-like country material heard in Team Kate and other cues.

The action music is good most of the time, but eventually I got a bit tired of the constant ostinatos. I was like "Ben, dude, we know they have been pressuring you to keep with the modern trends, but this kinda gets repetitive by the end".

Still, it's decent, not as good as The Flash but still fun.

I was disappointed with Wallfisch’s score for the movie. I liked his approach to scoring the scenes where the characters are observing the tornadoes— underscoring the dangerous beauty of weather. But the rest… he could’ve quoted Mancina’s motifs or written something different in the same musical language.

His score for The Flash was so much better in every way.

The score is OK but tries too hard (probably at the request of the filmmakers) to be many things I'm different places. But there are some nice highlights here and there, Wallfisch is skilled enough to give us some wondrous orchestral nuggets. And when he does that, it's a treat. I actually also don't mind the folk elements. In other places bit too drummish and Zimmerish for my taste.

I do have to say that recent Supercell score from Corey Wallace is a much more coherent, and ultimately more enjoyable, alternative. But Mancina's original is more entertaining than either of those so there's that.
