Popular Post tomsmoviemadness 4,249
https://shop.filmfestival.be/products/elliot-goldenthal-music-for-film American composer Elliot Goldenthal has made a tremendous contribution to the art of film and theater music. He has written music for nearly forty films and he impressed, time and again, with his unique mix of techniques, genres and styles. His combination of orchestral music with jazz, rock and electronic music has not only earned him three World Soundtrack Awards, but also an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. This album compiles the highlights of his award-winning oeuvre, but also presents two more recent concert suites. With brand new studio recordings of Frida, Heat and Alien³, among others, this album is a tribute to his flourishing career. Thor 9,308
Looking forward to the album and their renditions of the selections, whatever the track listing will turn out to be. I like many of the Brussels/Brossé albums, and own quite a few. Of course, it feels like Goldenthal has been a stalwart guest of WSA for decades (same as Krakow....he's turned into quite the festival hound in his semi-retirement days), so I'm surprised there wasn't one before. GerateWohl 5,937
I like his Alien score and still find his Batman theme still better than Elfman's. But, to be honest, that's about it for me. But I am looking forward to this album.
Tom Guernsey 3,263
Really looking forward to this one. Bespin Copilot 9,604
Ordered with two others. I already made space for it. I can't say I have a huge CD collection of Goldenthal's music, but I think I have an honest 'basic' collection.

I myself heard Titus, Final Fantasy, Interview with a Vampire, Frida, Batman and Alien 3 ones live. The Michael Collins one was released recently digitally. I wonder whether this album might contain at least some of those. Karol Tom Guernsey
Thor 9,308
Yup, and I heard the Gothic Suite performed live in Krakow a decade ago or so, in the steel mill. A stunning experience which I've probably told about before (ended with an über enthusiastic applauding and bowing Hans Zimmer in the audience....Kilar was there too, but showed less emotion, in true fashion). Karol Yeah, sorry, Kilar was there in 2012, while the Grand Gothic Suite was 2014. Goldenthal was there both times, but Zimmer only in the latter. Tend to conflate these two editions. It was Penderecki who was there for the 2014 edition, I think, and sat next to Goldenthal.

crocodile 9,183
Looks like I will get at least some of the coveted concert suites. According to Film Music Reporter, the album will feature Grand Gothic Suite (from Batman movies) and Final Fantasia from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, among other things: Quote Film Fest Gent has announced the new album Elliot Goldenthal – Music for Film featuring music by the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s World Soundtrack Awards, including all-new studio recordings of selected scores by the composer performed by the Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by the festival’s music director Dirk Brossé. The album includes two new concert suites for his Academy Award-winning score from Julie Taymor’s Frida, The Grand Gothic Suite, which includes highlights from his Grammy-nominated score for Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever and his never commercially unreleased score for Batman & Robin, the suite Final Fantasia, which celebrates his music for Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and a suite from his score for David Fincher’s Alien 3. Other titles included on the record are Interview with the Vampire & Michael Collins (for both of which he received Academy Award nominations), as well as Public Enemies, Heat and Titus. The CD will be released during the 51st edition of Film Fest Gent in October and is now available to order on the festival’s website. The album licensed to Silva Screen Records will be also available digitally and physically in other music stores. Skelly 273
I hope this is good. Goldenthal has spoken in recent years of these concert suites being the 'final word' on his '90s scores, the presentations of the music which he would like to preserve for posterity. But I wasn't very impressed by how he arranged "Michael Collins" and I think his albums also are no good. But I am very interested to see how he arranged "Alien 3", which is so textural. Edmilson 10,482
Hmm, I wasn't a fan of the Final Fantasy suite. For some reason it didn't include the main theme (or at least what I think is the main theme) from the movie. Maybe this indicates Goldenthal didn't particularly care for that theme? It was even used in trailers for the movie. I remember back when I was 8 or 9 and my dad bought the DVD for the movie (he used to buy DVDs for pretty much everything during that time). Goldenthal's theme left a huge impression on me even if I didn't care for the movie. I still think it's one of his best.

The secondary 'action' theme that starts at 1:10 (Race to Old New York) was mostly excised from the film and replaced with tracked material. GerateWohl 5,937
Right! The Final Fantasy score. Almost forgot about that. I had a burned copy of that. It reminded me a lot of Alien3, but I didn't find it as good.
Tom Guernsey 3,263
The tracklist appears to have been released: 1. Batman Forever / Batman & Robin - Grand Gothic Suite 2. Cobb - The Homecoming 3. Interview with the Vampire - Born to Darkness / Louis' Revenge 4. Heat - Of Helplessness 5. Frida - Still Life 6. Titus - Arrows of the Gods 7. Titus - Finale 8. Sphere - The Gift 9. Alien³ - Suite: First Attack I / The Entrapment / Lento / Adagio 10. Public Enemies - JD Dies 11. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - Final Fantasia Looks good to me, although lacking Michael Collins as has been noted on FSM. Still, much looking forward to this and still shocking that it's the first EG compilation... Bespin Copilot

Thor 9,308
Yeah, I think that one is covered pretty well between the OST and the concert suite. I can understand why MICHAEL COLLINS was left off. I'm stoked that they included a bit from SPHERE. Also HEAT, which hasn't been covered very often (despite both the film and score being classics). The others are more evergreens that one would expect on a Goldenthal WSA album. Of course, there is a myriad of rarities I would have loved to see, especially unreleased ones, but that's expecting too much.
Skelly 273
Looks like a good tracklist. He has always been very proud of that Titus finale so that must be why it has its own cut. I'm most curious to see how Alien 3 and Sphere were arranged. Incidentally, does anyone know what the choir is singing in the Titus opening? Ecce Tite, Romane fortis, cum... and then I get lost. crocodile 9,183
I absolutely adore this album. Have been listening to this quite a lot over the past week or so. Got my CD album today. Very nice liner notes from Goldenthal (going into his thought process behind the music and album) and also a lovely write-up by our own @fommes. 😀 I have a very soft spot for this music as I've heard a lot of these pieces live over the years and they provided me with some of the best memories from film music concert. As intellectual as Goldenthal can be, his music is always a hit with concert goers - it's infectious, vivid and every evocative. It's easy to get transported into composer's mad imagination. Davis 3,949
Excellent album, great performance, as always from the Brussels Philharmonic. Interviewing Elliot Goldenthal was one of the highlights of my career, to hear him talk about almost all of the scores represented on this album makes me appreciate it even more. A well deserved award, and a truly great programme. Bespin Copilot and karelm 1
