New 45 minute vinyl for Philosopher's Stone with an artsy cover design incoming!

Come next month it's been 6 years since the Potter box was released. It's possible LLL only had exclusivity of this assembly for 6 years and WB are now free to reissue the expansion on a label they own (Rhino might be able to license the film score from WB and the OST from WMG, just as LLL did).

On one hand it seems surprising the LLL box hasn't sold out yet. On the other hand, it only comes back in stock once or twice a year then immediately sells out. Either demand is huge or they're ordering very small quantities. Manufacturing costs will only increase (and WB seem increasingly difficult to work with) so I'd love to understand why LLL don't simply order all remaining units and call it a day. Is there some reason/strategy behind limiting supply for half a decade?

Nowadays titles are becoming unavailable to purchase after reaching some arbitrary deadline, regardless of what stock LLL has left on hand. I'd hate to see that happen to the Potter box when it's hardly been available to purchase.

Maybe WB isn't just happy with saying no to LLL anymore on future titles, maybe they now tell them when they can and can't re-stock too. I mean, they're so terribly busy there, you can't expect them to cope with the thought of a Potter box re-press.

It says "complete soundtrack", and "Harry Potter": as it doesn't explicitly mention any movie of the series my understanding is that a box containing the complete scores of the 8 Harry Potter movies is coming, ready for Christmas.

You know, I wish I could laugh.

You know what the worst part is? that I have a turntable now and... kind of want to get this.

Hang on a sec, what's going to be on side D of HP5? Can they do that? Is it gonna be 30 minutes of crackling? I really need it then.

For the longest time they only had picture disks available for the first few movies. The resale for those was crazy high so I refrained from ever getting them. So I'm very happy that this boxset is getting a release!

Me too.

And then there is the problem of selecting the right house or vinyl colour without support from a sorting hat. Hard-core HP fans probably need to opt for all four editions.

I would have preferred just the three JW OSTs on black vinyl. Period.

I'm not a big enough HP nerd to get a set other than Gryffindor. The house of the main characters is good enough for me lol.

There is always the chance that these are released individually after they cash in on the big set

I reckon you ordered the Slytherin set. ;)

No, but my order back-lashed ("Do I really want red vinyl?"), and I shall now be eating slugs until Christmas...

I actually would love the opportunity to own all the OSTs on regular black vinyl but this is a very expensive release.

Even just the first three. Or the first 4 and the last two.

Alright, THE JW release I've been waiting for all my life. And I'm getting all 4 colors so all my disks don't skip in the same spot.

Just realized that Hooper is the only composer receiving an etching.

Buying slowly over time isn't too bad. Two boxsets being released in a short time hurt though lol.

The etching on Order of the Phoenix

Wonder what the etchings on the other editions may look like...

I made it through all 16 LPs this week! Granted, I played them while working, so they didn’t have my full, undivided attention, but I tried to listen closely.

Thoughts on the Packaging/Pressing:

The box itself is very nice and sturdy. This thing is heavy, so it’s good that the box doesn’t feel like it’s going to crumble when you pick it up. However, the outer sleeve is really slick, so you have to remove it before lifting the box. They also did a great job on the design of both the box and the sleeve.

The individual record sleeves feature the original movie posters, which I think was a great design choice. However, I did notice a couple of issues with the labels. One label isn’t stamped down all the way, so it’s puffed up, and another has a second, off-center hole punch (in the label only). The Order of the Phoenix record has a slight warp, which seems to be a common occurrence with etched records. Thankfully, it doesn’t affect playback.

Overall, I think the pressing is really good and sounds great. It’s very dry here right now, so there was a bit of static buildup causing some minor pops, but that would be fixed with cleaning or in less dry conditions. Across all the records, I think there was only one pop that seemed like it wouldn’t be fixed by cleaning.

Thoughts on the Scores:

I don’t think I’ve really listened to the scores separately from the movies, aside from the first three. Now that I’ve listened to all of them within a week, here’s my ranking:

  1. The Prisoner of Azkaban

    • Overall, the best all-around score. It still has the iconic Harry Potter sound but with a darker tone to match the film.
  2. The Sorcerer’s Stone

    • The most iconic of all the scores (obviously). It could easily be #1 based on the themes alone.
  3. The Deathly Hallows: Part II

    • The most emotional of all the scores.
  4. The Goblet of Fire

    • The most unique and perhaps the most fun. It’s a refreshing one-off.
  5. The Chamber of Secrets

    • Still really good overall but lacks the freshness of The Sorcerer’s Stone.
  6. The Deathly Hallows: Part I

    • To a lesser extent, it shares the same reasoning as Part II.
  7. The Half-Blood Prince

    • Honestly, I’m not sure how to rank the last two. This one and The Order of the Phoenix are the most forgettable of the series. While still enjoyable, I don’t think I’ll play them as much.
  8. The Order of the Phoenix

    • Ditto.

Not bad, not bad. Glad you enjoyed it.
