What a fantastic announcement, and the cover is awesome as well - love the detail with the pteranodons and the parachute!

The two main things I'm hoping for here are that the film version of Raptor Room has a brass moment where Leoni is looking at the raptor through the glass, which is either edited out of the OST or is an alternate take. Plus all the end credit material after the tracked Brachiosaurus on the Bank. It's about a minute and a half longer than my edit so I'm sure all that material is there. Boy am I going to be nervous playing those two for the first time.

I think I came to terms with not hearing the cage percussion some time ago - my best guess would be that it's stock music/samples.

And being Mike and Neil, we know it will sound as good as it's possible to be. Deep, deep down I thought, surely they had to be working on this one after starting a nice remastering and design series with Williams.

"New Music Composed and Conducted by" might be one of the funniest music credits

At least this is more direct to the point than Powell's credit on Solo though.

Yes, it's an odd one. All of the music is new... just that some of it quotes Williams' themes. Unless they're referring to bits such as the island theme, which are effectively reorchestrations of Williams' material, so Williams is technically the composer for those bits?

I'm thinking of cleansing my aural palette and removing the promo from my playlist so I approach the release freshly in about 3 weeks' time.

Its weird to have the ost first though. It seems they did the same with spiderman 2 but its on a different disc. Maybe it was contractually obligated but neither jp or tlw were like that

Love the cover!

I think the cover is okaaaay. Not crazy about the silver (although I get that it's a nod to the theatrical poster) and I really don't like the Spino's adjusted posture. It looks like she's doing the limbo.

Otherwise stoked for this release and will be using my own artwork for this (Jim Titus-inspired).

FILM VERSIONS

Its been 2000 years!

Alltho there only being 1 version for the Paul Takes a Leap track makes me worried its gonna be the FYC version.

23 years since the film, so I'd imagine there might've been the odd post from 2001 about whether its anniversary was going to be marked.

And yep, every time LLL has come out with a monthly flyer some of us found a tad disapppointing for our personal tastes, stuff like this was waiting to come out. Just imagine what's still sitting there, waiting for signatures....

Oh, I was never in any doubt that it's all decided by lawyers. Just looking for some semblance of logic in it... which can be a futile exercise :P

I have to say though, I actually like this the most of the three covers. For my taste, the first one is a bit too bare and white and TLW goes in very heavy on the red. This one has the nice grey, broken up with the pteranodons and the broken parachute (great detail!) and the red slashes. Very nice balancing.

Had a listen to the sample of the end credits and it's got the fanfare from the start of the credits in the film, but evidently that was originally later on in the cue, and the film goes into the dinosaur theme at that point.

The OST version has what I assume is Davis' intended music for the flying dinosaurs shot and the start of the credits, and an edited few minutes from the rest.

Hence this set is the first time ever that we will hear the entire finale cue as intended - even between the film, and OST and the promo it's not heard in its full form. I reckon Johnston replaced the first credits section with Brachiosaurus On The Bank (totally the right decision) and then, possibly as a result of that, cut out the island fanfare to follow it, then let the rest of the cue flow, minus the island fanfare.

Listening to the samples, it doesn't appear to be a huge upgrade in sound quality like I was hoping for, but I'm sure they did all they could. Seems like some film versions are missing though, like Pteranodon Habitat:

The recording probably wasn't fantastic to begin with, but the samples feel more enveloping than the promo, and as you said, Mike and Neil will have done everything possible to remaster it.

I wonder whether the liners will address the birdcage sequence at all - it's been a mystery for a very long time where that percussion was tracked from. It's one of three things - stock percussion, something from the first film's elements, or a genuine alternate, and I don't think it's that last one. Most likely a case where something was used on the editing stage that either isn't available now or wasn't documented.

It's a shame because it's much more effective in the film than the intended beginning of the cue would've been, but I've kind of lost the impetus to hear it over the years.

Aside from that, there are probably 3 things (two are very minor, and one's on the promo) that need to be here for it to be a closed book for me.

There's stock music from Immediate Music in an old bootleg I found years ago. Is this it, or is this just from one of the trailers?

That's one of the trailer cues, yes. There's another one from Non-Stop Music from the trailer.

The birdcage one sounds like samples to me.

The film version of Raptor Room is 9 seconds longer than the album version, and I'm very much hoping/assuming that it's because it's got this bit. I can't fathom why Davis would edit it out so it's probably a tiny alternate section - it's also named 'film version' so something is musically different.

Yeah, I'm starting to think that bit in the birdcage scene isn't something actually recorded for this score. Would be nice to have though! But if the rest is on there I'm not too bothered.

Luckily for you, there's a lot less room for wordplay with this one.

Wonderful news!

This will feel good to have all 3 fully complete like this.

Question though, does Williams and his people tell them to put his name above Don Davis?  Is this a move by LLL for marketing? How's that work, I mean I kinda feel bad for Don to not get top booking on that.

I could care less either way it's just interesting

Isn't the birdcage percussion in the film thought to be pulled from TLW's "Ripples"? Or was there never a conclusive answer to that?

Anyway, it's gonna be tough to wait for this one to arrive! So so glad it's finally happening. I wish I could tell my 20-year-old self that by 2025, we'd have legit expanded releases of all three JP films.

The percussion in ripples is too quick and 'dry' sounding, but the percussion right at the start of T-Rex Rescue sounds mighty close. Maybe back in 2001 they had access to percussion stems from the first score?

Anyway, we've got the entire actual score to look forward to - I'll be so happy to finally delete that promo forever.

Neil has just responded on the FSM thread about the ordering of the discs (makes perfect sense) - might be worth asking him if they had any idea what the birdcage music is from?

Knowing how these things work, it'll probably turn out they did the audio for this 5 years ago and neither can remember :P

There's 4 more sequels they can do now! We're just getting started...

The question no one is asking is... are these "Enhanced CDs"? ;) (For those who know, you'll know...)

I hope all the wallpapers are ported across from the OST album!

This was a blast to write the liner notes for! I've long maintained that JPIII is in the very top tier of "Williams sequel scores not written by Williams." It balances the Williams-derived material with original material and Davis's sensibilities just brilliantly, and it's just ripping good music all around -- including one of my favorite action cues ("Billy Oblivion") of the early aughts. I also appreciated the opportunity to interview Davis, who had some wonderful stories and insights to share.

As a kid, I used to film little movies with JP action figures and vehicles scored by tracks like Billy Oblivion. This score holds a special place in my heart. Love it.
