La-La Land Records, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, EON Productions and Universal Music Enterprises mark the 45th Anniversary of the eleventh 007 film Moonraker, with a remastered and expanded 2-CD re-issue of composer John Barry's original motion picture score.  The 1979 film stars Roger Moore as James Bond in his fourth turn as 007 and is produced by Albert R. Broccoli and directed by Lewis Gilbert.

 

Oscar® winning composer John Barry continues to bring his creative mastery to the Bond franchise with a thrilling, often romantic score that not only takes 007 around the world… but propels him into outer space.  Shirley Bassey returns for her third Bond title song featuring lyrics by Hal David.

 

Expanded beyond previous soundtrack editions and with highly enhanced audio quality, Moonraker blasts off like never before within this deluxe presentation.

 

Produced by Neil S. Bulk, remixed by Mike Matessino from high-resolution digital transfers of 2” tapes provided by MGM, and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this is a special 2-CD release, limited to only 5,000 units.

 

Disc One presents the score in chronological order and features music never before available, followed by source music recorded for the film and additional versions of score cues.

 

Disc 2 presents the original 1979 soundtrack album, newly assembled for this release, followed by alternate versions of the title song, including two early versions with lyrics and vocals by Oscar® and GRAMMY® winner Paul Williams. The exclusive, new liner notes are by film music journalist and author Jon Burlingame and art direction is by Dan Goldwasser.

I love Neil's post - it reflects a lot of my obsession with Batman and Total Recall - the formative experiences are so important for all our experiences

 

I like Barry but not a fan of Bond music (ie 'the Bond music', the silhouettes and guitars), totally love when Barry and Arnold go outside of the Bond score field. Not sure about Moonraker. Action was not Barry's gift.

It has some truly awesome cues

" Corinne Put Down" and " Flight Into Space" are among the best things JB ever composed.

The music for the hijack sequence shows off his skill at creating suspense and mystery in just a few bars of music .

 

Those are just about the only compelling scenes in the entire wretched film

It's a good score! But it sounds a bit more like 80s Barry. The sharpness and energy and twang of his earlier Bond scores (up through and including The Man With the Golden Gun) is largely missing, in favor of more of an epic sweeping sound. I do like that it has some powerful moments of Space Awe. Yes, there's still some Bond-iness to it of course (no doubt more so in complete form than on the shitty old half hour album); I'm just saying that of all Barry's scores for Bond, this has the least of his iconic Bond sound IMO. The following score Octopussy has a lot of sweeping music in it but it feels relatively like a return to form (probably spurred to include more of the Norman Bond theme for example, since it was competing with Never Say Never Again which couldn't use it).
