Jurassic Shark 13,719
Out of curiosity, are JWFans into playing music as well as listening to it? If you're not too ashamed about it, please comment which instrument you're playing. Edit: Whoopsie, I was meaning to post this poll in Other Topics. Could you please move it there, @Jay? Thor 8,688
Alas, no. I played a little bit of percussion as a youngster (djembe, tamtams, that kind of stuff...not drum kits!), and still have decent rhythm in my body, but that's about it. So I had to vote "No". Edmilson 9,428
When I was a child my parents put me in musical classes. First from ages 11 to about 13/14 (not sure) I studied a bit of cello. Then during my teens I studied some piano (which was the instrument I actually wanted to learn in first place, not sure why I chose cello before). Anyway, I studied these instruments and music reading for a while. Only to find out that I'm absolutely incapable of reading music sheet, understanding its instructions and translating them for the instrument I'm playing. It's something my brain simply cannot do, or at least not in a more technical level. I could only play very basic beginner stuff Eh, playing and reading music is not for me. These days I'm more than happy with just listening to it. badbu

ricsim88 266
I’ve been playing trumpet professionally for 30 years in various Canadian symphony orchestras, but unfortunately have to retire at the end of the current season due to major issues with my jaw, which is not fixable. Thankfully last year I got to perform the With Malice toward none solo as part of a movie music concert. Definitely a highlight of my career. Loert 2,784
I can play piano. I used to play violin badly. I took guitar lessons once but my teacher wanted me to sing at the same time, which ended in disaster. I've also been known to play the recorder, xylophone, glockenspiel, triangle, and wood blocks. Marian Schedenig 9,384
Define "do you" - "can you"? "Do you poorly"? "Do you even though you absolutely can't"? I did two or three years in an electric organ course back in school, but it really was just by-the-numbers etudes once a week in a room with other students. I have a digital piano on which I'm mostly self taught (aside from that e-organ course); I "can" play some stuff (I have several Williams and Menken albums, also McCreary's BSG, Nyman's The Piano, and Glass's The Hours), but almost never without mistakes (and I've barely touched it for years). I have a guitar, but never managed to change my chord grip quickly and cleanly enough. Ukulele works better for me. I have an Otamatone and will likely never learn to play it cleanly enough to get any "serious" use out of it, but it was fun enough playing along with the Black Sails main titles during my recent rewatch. Next project: An electronic drum kit. But the only thing I'm doing "seriously" (though even that without proper training) is choir singing - some 20 years now, next concert on Saturday. VenomVeVenom 133
I spent five years in a rock band, starting when I was just 12. During that time, I played bass, guitar, drums, and piano, but the bass has always been my main instrument. I'd say I'm actually quite good at it. I've been thinking about getting a keyboard, since I'm focusing much more on music theory now.. Many composers use it to create melodies, and as an (amateur) composer myself, I feel it's time to start playing it.

Most drummers don't study music, formally. They just start banging away until they get good. I did too but my father was a pro and knew people who teach. Jamie Dutton 7,656
I briefly played clarinet when my insane mother insisted on it because my brother had played it. It was a completely wacky idea because I had recently gotten braces and my mouth was filled with painful canker sores. As I attempted to play the clarinet, forcibly, my canker sores would burst. After I complained to the music instructor, my nutjob Mother begrudgingly agreed that this wasn't the proper course of action for me. bruce marshall, enderdrag64 and Lady Dimitrescu 1
mrbellamy 6,877
I was getting to be a pretty solid trumpet player from grades 4-12 but gave up on it. It's hard to maintain regular practice when you're no longer in an ensemble. I started learning piano in college so it's been around 15 years of that. Definitely an intermediate player but I've kept at it. Pretty good singer, took voice lessons and did choir and musicals so I learned some technique, but I don't really practice or sing in public besides karaoke. And I can play some guitar but not very seriously.
Thor 8,688
Well, if singing counts, I can sorta add that. Sung in choirs, some solo gigs etc. over the years. ChrisAfonso 204
My main instrument is violin, the only one I'd claim to be somewhat advanced on (with about 10 years of proper lessons) and have played in amateur and university orchestras since the late 90s (with a bit of viola sprinkled in for good measure). I've also had a few years of horn lessons. Other than that, I have some middling self-taught "bang around and miss a lot of notes"-style piano skills (with my repertoire being mostly the same few Williams/film cues for >20 years...), and have dabbled with guitar, trumpet, ocarina, and various percussion things, mostly for side projects and fun sessions with friends. (Can you tell I'm fascinated by instruments? I'd love to have one of each, given unlimited money and storage space ) ragoz350 and Jurassic Shark 1

johnmillions 21
I used to play clarinet, as evidenced by my profile picture, but I haven't played since 2005. I went to college for music performance, and I have two degrees in organ. I used to work in church music, but I "retired" (at age 32--but I work in a non-musical field now) in 2020 and haven't played since.
