PROGRAM
The music of John Williams:
Main Theme from Superman
The Flight to Neverland from Hook
A Child’s Tale from The BFG
Harry’s Wondrous World from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Main Theme from Dracula
One Barrel Chase from Jaws
Adventures on Earth from E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Dracula on the programme?! I wasn't aware that there was a HL orchestral score of that!

I'll be there! Maybe I'll film it on my phone and post it like I did for the 2019 concert.

Wow! This *is* big news. And it's not that far away, so he must be doing well. Can't wait to hear more about it!

There is not (at least that I am aware of), but such things are not necessary for programming.

Absolutely! I've been thinking that Jenny's "...but he'll be back on the road again soon" comment was just red carpet hot air, but appears he will indeed be back on the road. Awesome!

And the first life sign (via a quote from him) in a long time. Good to hear!

Not surprised to see 'Dracula' on the programme, since Denève is a fan of the score. Man, I'd love to hear it performed live!

He's back, baby!  2028 Olympic theme all but confirmed!  Theme for Rey's son Jabba Skywalker being recorded in March! :D

Speaking of Dracula, of all the Mutter arrangements, I think it is the best.  It really expands on the theme in interesting ways.  I wish that it would become the standard version (though maybe it is too demanding on the violinist for such things).

Honestly, some of the arrangements grate on my ears somewhat with cadenzas that have Mutter showing off her virtuosity and doing violin gymnastics, but the instrument and treatment matches well with 'Dracula.' When she hits the high note and the main theme swells to a fever pitch, it's great.

I suppose it's reserved for Mutter for now, so everyone else has to play the standard arrangement. Something from Dracula was performed at the LSO concert in 2018 that Williams was supposed to conduct - I suppose it was the Main Theme mentioned above, though I don't recall it in detail now. In any case, something is clearly available for performances.

It is surreal that Williams will be attending.  Even if it ultimately doesn't work out, it is a great sign that he is doing well, all things considered.

Also, yea BFG.  I love this suite.  If one can break their association with the movie (and a movie whose target audience wasn't them to to begin with) and just listen, it is a superb piece that captures the innocence of very early childhood.

Yeah, seems like it should be getting more attention and likes here on, y'know, the "John Williams Fan Network."

The draft was ready but for some reason it didn't get posted. Thanks for pointing that out.

This is most-welcome news.  BUT...consider the details.

Individual tickets are $2,500.00.  Black tie event.  Flight to Miami and Hotel.

It adds up to quite a bill if you want to attend in person.

It’s indeed great news that Williams will hopefully attend. But he won’t be conducting, not even an encore, and that is also a sign. His conducting days might be over. Let’s hope for the best. Looking forward to seeing the photos of him actually attending.

Maybe. But you can't tell from the announcement. If he only conducts the encores or the final parts of a concert, it's usually not listed in advance. Not even in Tanglewood, when he ends up conducting almost the entire second half of the concert as a surprise.

This is amazing news! So happy!!!

Excellent news! The fact that his first appearance will be all the way on the East Coast (rather than near home in LA as one might have expected) suggests that his health has greatly improved. And I'm not too worried about the fact that JW isn't listed as a conductor. Though obviously we can't know for sure, one has to expect he'll at least conduct the Imperial March as an encore, if nothing else. (That's what he did at some prior gala concerts in recent years.)

I'm not too fussed about whether Williams will conduct or not. He's a quite private person, so for him to feel comfortable attending a public event is a great sign for his health in general, which I care more about than his career.

The gala is on the 22nd of February, the day before tickets for the Berlin concerts go on sale. I'm still wondering if they will be postponed or not.

Williams is back as conductor? Splendid news!

I accidentally posted a different program here. It was the "John Williams Spotlight" concert in Los Angeles, with Yo-Yo Ma and Gustavo Dudamel. Sorry for the mistake! :(

This is what happens when I’m being optimistic for a change.

If you are curious, I should point out that optimism killed the cat.

JW now mentioned as "guest artist"...

So now what?  Williams thinks that he can paint or something?

Posted

Looks like Williams will conduct after all, if he is listed as "guest artist" and not as "special guest". That would be something.

Maybe he'll turn the pages for Denéve.

I am attending this Miami event.   Heard that JW will conduct a portion.  Of course it’s unofficial until it happens but I heard from a reliable source.

Please post a report as soon as you can next Saturday, so we can read it before the Berlin tickets go on sale.

I’ll be there as well. The Maestro is listed as “guest artist,” so I guess this is already known. Thanks for sharing, and welcome.
