New World Symphony (Miami) honors JW at gala 2/22/25

This is indeed encouraging news, and it makes sense that Williams would want to get reacquainted with the podium a little (exactly one year to the day since his last performance) to warm up for Berlin.

Honestly, who else has been wondering whether Williams will show up in Miami (the first we'll see of him since a year ago) looking a bit older than last time, or 5 years younger, or walking with a stick, or with a speech impairment, or in a wheelchair? That the various organisers seem to be optimistic that he'll be able to conduct the concerts seems to rule out the last few of those at least, fortunately.

You remind me of that footage of Morricone being driven around an airport in a wheelchair on his way to one of his latter-day European gigs. I expect nothing, and everything, and take it as it comes.

The fact that he's apparently going ahead with 3 solo concerts leads me to think he's received bionic implants...

He conducted his Budapest concert sitting.

Perhaps he's had hair transplant.

Morricone sat while conducting several concerts of his last tours, but that came after he actually hurt his back during the tour. I think that happened (in Germany?) just before I saw him in Vienna. They announced that he'd be back a year or two later, and I didn't think he'd be up for that. He had an operation after that tour and did another one (and really came back to Vienna again).

He really shouldn't have stage dived at his age.

Yes, he sat during the Oslo concert in 2019 too.

And I think he died from falling in his shower at the age of 91.

It was definitely a fall and he broke his leg, complications from that. So sad to think about. I don't remember any other specific details being published, not that we need them.

Pretty much how I feel. I am a little nervous about it but it will be nice to see him make an appearance finally!

NSW Gala?  I expect a lot of naked musicians. I guess that justifies the steep ticket prices.

Oh, wait, NWS.  I guess I'll just stay home and listen to the music on CD.

Dear NWS Gala Supporter,

Regrettably, a minor health matter has prevented John Williams from being in Miami for this weekend’s Gala. He is so sorry to miss this wonderful celebration of the New World Symphony and our collective mission of supporting our country’s best and brightest young orchestral musicians.

John wishes to thank everyone who has so generously supported this gala and asks us to kindly share the following personal message with each of you:

"I’m so sorry to miss being with all of you at this year’s gala and I wish to thank everyone present for supporting these brilliant young musicians. I also wish to congratulate Maestro Denève on his wonderful work inspiring a new generation of orchestral musicians. They are the future of our cultural life, and all of you are the generous custodians of that precious future."

We wish Maestro Williams a swift recovery and we thank him for everything he does to support America’s orchestral musicians.

I look forward to greeting you at this very special Gala

I'm just gonna hope that "minor" means that he is still able to enjoy his life but from the outside it is unfortunately looking like conducting and/or traveling could be off the table from now on. Guess we'll see.

While this is disappointing, I am certainly glad that it is only a minor health concern. It is far more important that the Maestro recover and keep himself healthy.

Los Angeles is not known for great air quality, in any event.

Also, I repeat my impression of these health announcements:

But you don’t catch a cold from bad air quality.

I hope it’s just a minor health concern and not PR spin.

At this point, his people had better be keeping him in a BSL-4 clean room that’s programmed to unlock itself only when he needs someone to give him more blank staff paper or he’s about to step out to rehearse or conduct the Berlin Philharmonic.

no, but it can cause minor health issues.

If he had agreed to attend at the time when the concert was first announced officially, then it means he anticipated recovery but ultimately hasn't (sufficiently). That, or, he is newly 'sick'. His cancellation of Vienna was announced several weeks before the event; his withdrawal from this event is only a few days prior of it, so cancellation of either appearances might be due to separate causes.

So did this happen. Doesn't sound good that Williams wasn't there. He hasn't done a public appearance in more than a year
