Rise of Skywalker Unrecorded Cue Mockups

As barely any of the Rise of Skywalker soundtrack has been officially released, and many of the cues aren't even used in the film, I decided to make mockups using the music from the few cues that we have available. 

 

Note: I'm not 100% sure on the tempos, I just did what sounded right based on the mood/feeling of the cue

I will continue to add more mockups here as I make them!

Very cool. Children's School sounds like a mix between Harry Potter and the prequel trilogy music. What would this music have accompanied?

I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to accompany the scene in Pasanna where Rey meets the children at the village and they give her the necklace, etc. - some of the music is actually used in the final film but it’s impossible to get a clean rip without sound effects

The sketches for the cues that don't have a specified BPM are marked with timestamps every couple of bars or so, which should more or less tell you all you need to know in terms of tempo. For instance, following along with the sketch, I notice your mockup of 0M1 is a bit too fast.

I actually used the typeset scores, not the sketches, so those didn't have timestamps

Sure, that makes perfect sense. I figured it might be interesting to check the sketches for timestamps since JW usually writes those down for his own convenience.

This is as good a time as any for me to ask, maybe not for the first time: what are mockups and how do we have them? Is someone going through John Williams’ trash?

In a way lol. Typed and/or handwritten sheet music leaks out from people who have access to these things in one way or another. We have a lot of these for a lot of scores, complete and incomplete. A handful of Rise of Skywalker cues are out there, including these unused ones. 

 

Mockups are just people using software to copy everything from the sheet music so that a synth orchestra can approximate what it would sound like. Instrument samples have gotten better over the years but obviously we all hope these things were recorded for real and we might hear them someday.

They released Musesounds, which is probably the best free soundfont I've seen in a notation software - in some cases it might even be better than NotePerformer

Rey's theme?!? Sounds like something from Poirot the TV series.
