Yes, there’s quite a bit that went partially or completely unused, or was replaced with tracking. The duration of the score in the film is 1:31:32 (according to the SABAM Repertoire), but Intrada’s score presentation is 1:47:44. crumbs, Holko, Edmilson and 2 others 3
Popular Post crumbs 15,495
I can't wait to see the runtime of previously unreleased music on the Intrada that wasn't on the OST, too. Another detail I love about recent expansions is how many times we get an unreleased cue plus an alternate of that unreleased cue. There's no less than 4 instances of that for this album (Redcoats In The Cornfield, Rough Fighter Recruited, The Wedding and To Gullah Maroon), and Minority Report and Amistad had some of these as well (The Collage, Discovering the Bible). We can approximate it: the OST is 72:39. Take off 6:40 for the repeated material in the first track and you have 65:59. Disc one of the expansion is 75:24, and disc two is 76:36, a total of 152:00. 152:00 - 65:59 = roughly 87:59. This doesn’t account for sections that may be identical in alternates, but it’s some idea of what’s new. In many cases, source music is farmed out to collaborators or even to a separate team, but here Williams likely wanted to have an overall consistency with such material and his own original score, so he took care of it himself. But this is such a highly unusual practice. I've read a lot of instances in the rejected scores book of composers back in the 60s/70s writing all the source, and two releases I have (Wild Wild West and Naked Gun) are both by composers roughly from that era and both have lots of composer-provided source. Hence isn't it just a retained practice from years gone where the composer did basically everything? Not diminishing Williams' commitment of course (the amount of source he did for Potter alone is significant), but isn't it largely a sort of generational thing that's almost died out? GerateWohl 5,918
I think, it is not always a matter of time and ambition if a composer writes the source music or not. Especially when it comes to songs or tradditionals some original stuff is often used on purpose. So, the director actually wants to use "What a Wonderful World" in this scene and not ask the cpmposer to write "something just like this but origial". Or something like "at this point in time in such situations they used to play this tune, so to make this historically more accurate, we play this here, too." Amer 2,524
Usually Williams isn't all for having the source music as Mike has alluded to in his chats but it does require certain types of justification to have them included in the programs. Thankfully the material used is an essential part of the fabric of the score and is therefore necessary. Yavar Moradi and That_Bloke

That is interesting. Maybe JJ Baby told him not to worry about it. JJ likes to make more money on his projects by having writing credits on some music, like the opening titles to Alias, Lost, Fringe and Alcatraz, or the source music in TFA and TROS. Richard P 4,752
5-8 EST is not good for European buyers. Considering Intrada is west coast, you'd think they could go along with LLL's PT midnight/midday timing. I'll be looking for some fairly extensive samples as this is still a 'maybe' for me.
