Just wanted to say that I recently read your Film Music Ex Narratio over on FSM, and enjoyed it. It shared and illustrated many of the opinions on ost albums-as-a-form, and what I call the "toy-maker" aspect of music, and particularly film music sans film, that I have been formulating the past couple of years.

Cheers, Schilkeman! I haven't thought about that in years. It was an important piece for me, a kind of test run for what would later be my thesis. Googling it now, I see that "Part 3" seems to be missing, for some reason. I could only find "Part 1" and "Part 2".

I was thinking this stuff before that. What did get into my head was all the expansions I bought that I didn't enjoy listening to. Reasoning that all out led me back to OSTs. All my expansions are gone. I don't regret it.

Where I prefer the JW expansion:

A.I.

E.T.

Minority Report

Any Star Wars

Home Alone

Spacecamp

Jaws

CE3K

RotLA

HP1

WotW

Superman

Dracula

The River

The Eiger Sanction

Sabrina

Where I prefer the OST:

Presumed Innocent

Empire of the Sun

Temple of Doom

Amistad

Home Alone 2

HP2

For the rest I either don't really mind or I know just one version.

Unexpected one for me in 'prefer OST': RotS

I have a strong nostalgic attachment to the OST and there are really only ten minutes or so of music I'd add to make it a much stronger album for me. I'd also retain both the OST and film versions of the opening battle - the OST flows better but it does omit some interesting material.
