Switched to my iPad and got it working. So excited for this. Definitely one of my big remaining grails.

shipping Late April means it should come out around mid May and I’ll get it in early June!

I realize now there's quite a few blockbuster Zimmer scores from the early 2000s (my favorite era of his) that are in need of official expansions!  Pirates, Sherlocks, Dark Knight Trilogy, King Arthur, Inception, Last Samurai. Heck even hits from the 90s like Crimson Tide, Muppet Treasure Island, Prince of Egypt. Seems like there's a change in the wind. Better start saving!

Depending on where he recorded a lot of those might not be eligible for expansion.

The Gladiator Sketchbook? I'm in

I do wonder how long this has been in the planning, given it was only just a few years ago that we learned a few of these tracks even existed. I am especially curious about the rather extended opening, given I'm used to that whole sequence being around 11:42 in length.

Hopefully, this means we can get some other Zimmer goodness. Da Vinci Code and Hannibal are in dire need of expansion. Both celebrate their anniversaries next year - 20th and 25th, respectively.

The film didn't directly get me into scores (I was just about into instrumental music when I saw the film) but at some point soon after I'd have gotten the OST and that changed things.

This is a very personally significant milestone, because there are three scores that effectively got me into film music: Harry Potter 1, Fellowship, and this. All now expanded, at last.

This also means that my #1 grail is.. well. I don't really have one! The Terminal is my next wish, but basically everything else that could emerge from any of the labels is just cool stuff, rather than grail status.

And yes, I'd love to know how long this has been in the works for - years if some comments elsewhere are to be believed.

It looks like we got three Sketchbook/demo tracks on the MMF, so we'll never have heard the rest before. I'm assuming by length that track 10 in additional music is the OST's The Battle with the Lisa ending, as the film has a different 'lament' ending section.

I think maybe the Pirates trilogy would be the next big one for me. Maybe Prince of Egypt. But all my big ones are being released.

Star Wars prequels aside

SW/Indy is a whole other thing, plus those aren't grails for me. More like 'oh, neat!' when/if they emerge.

There's a ton of stuff I'd buy when it comes out - just that none of it is grail status - just really-cool-to-have things. I've waited for this one for years.

Despite my recent carping about the recent concert film, this was easily one of the standouts of that concert and a great score. Yeah, we might have wanted Jerry to be brought on to resurrect the sound of Alex North but it was never gonna happen. Very excited to hear this expanded... although interesting that it doesn't include the OST presentation (let the bitching commence* ;-) but I'm good with that. I will keep the OST as it's a superbly produced album that I'm sure will remain a fine companion to the expanded release, much like The Thin Red Line does. Plus anyone who wants it can buy it for 8 pence in almost any good second hand CD shop as it is one of those scores that was so ubiquitous scores that there are plenty of spares lurking.

I hope this means I can ditch the More Music From album... I have only listened to it a couple of times but, like Back to Titanic, it has some additional music which is nice to have but also... dialogue.

Looking at the individual track credits, I thought it might say "contains at least 19% Hans Zimmer" (For the avoidance of doubt, I'm joking ;-)

*seriously though... don't.

The music used in first 26 seconds of that trailer, was the sample I would play ad nauseam for my parents as a youngster! I was obsessed with it. So great to finally have this!

All that excitement and forgot to order! Man, shipping isn't cheap.

I like that we've got a variant cover too - I can keep the original for the OST.

love the OST and play it all the time in the car. I can't offhand see anything from the MMF that isn't here. Not sure about that weird All That Remains track, but I could never work out what on earth that was, nor why it was so brief. The alternates section looks healthy, which is really good.

@Stéphane Humez can you shed some light on Zimmer's process when he and two or three other composers are credited for a cue? Like "Rome Is The Light" / "Now We Are Free"/ "Busy Bee" etc. I assume it breaks down as Zimmer's initial tune, Gerard's vocal contributions, and Badelts...iterations on Zimmer's tune(?)

Terrific. I'm looking forward to reading the liner notes. The packaging looks stellar too. A gorgeous release all around!

I can’t lie, I have a soft spot for those remixes! Not really needed on an archival edition though. So glad this is here!

Something I'll want to try to do with this, is what I couldn't really do satisfactorily with Sleepy Hollow, to create an alternates album with probably 90% of what's on disc 3. Most scores don't have anywhere near enough bonus material to do that, but I suspected this would, and it looks great - a very worthy and comprehensive use of 3 discs.

Same here, athough not to my parents, but to myself. I think that's why I dig the PotC soundtrack so much, as it seems to be birthed right out of this small snippet.

Stéphane, I feel guilty-not-guilty about adding yet another question for you. Could you tell us how Zimmer feels about these presentations? I’ve always thought that the wonderful presentations people like you are putting together now are what we all should have been able to buy from day one. Does Mr Zimmer have a special attachment to any particular OST presentation? Does he think that only this kind of treatment is the real deal? Or does he regard this as a product for hard-core fans?

I'm curious about the sketchbook. There's often a lot of cool stuff in Zimmer's sketch-type variations.

I also have a doubt about this score that has long plagued me. I saw somewhere that Gladiator was performed by the "Lyndhurst Orchestra", an orchestra that I haven't seen before or since doing any film music stuff.

In Wikipedia there are many places called Lyndhurst... Some in Australia, one in Ontario, one in Hong Kong, another one in New Zealand, two in the United Kingdom and a few in the United States (in New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyndhurst

So where the score was recorded? Is this Lyndhurst Orchestra a thing?

@Thor Yes I agree. I actually enjoyed the Dune Sketchbook more than the OST! Same for Dark Pheonix.

Some of the sketchbook for Gladiator here looks like it was on the "More Music" Album back in the day (Gladiator Waltz, Duduk of the North, Rome Is The Light). But it will be nice to get the whole picture sans dialogue.

Certainly it will clarify where various materials originated from, i.e. some will have been mislabelled alternates and others will be from the sketchbook (the MMF had very poetic titles, and various other things float around YT with similarly questionable titles).

And once it's clear in your head what things are and where they fit in the overall score, I find them easier to appreciate.

Well he always told me "the albums are for the fans", and well, I'm a fan, so I have an idea what fans might want !

I always consider his initial albums to be "his take" on those scores. But make no mistake he rarely compiles even his OSTs.

He'll definitely won't sit down and go through 2 or 3 hours of an expanded release, even though I like to send him some cues for feedback (on mastering, or remixing if need be) and he's always helpful.

If he has a problem with anything, he knows he can tell me. But usually the only concern he tells me is... "Is it any good ?" and he trusts me to not fuck it up !

The score was recorded at Air Studios, Lyndhurst Hall. I believe since the orchestra had no name, they used the place's name ! :)

When you say he doesn't compile his own OSTs, is that by choice? Curious.

Interesting... so I've been wrongly assuming Zimmer is a really good album producer. Someone else on his team evidently is.
