I have as much interest and hype for it as I have for watching the paint go dry. How the mighty have fallen.

 

At least they didn't announce the Waititi movie though. Hopefully it'll be cancelled.

Seriously, though, kinda feels like this'll happen. Shawn Levy plays nice with studios and is on a roll as a crowdpleaser if nothing else, and these initial announcements never have stars as big as Gosling already committed unless it's a returning vet. Also considering it's post-Rise of Skywalker in the timeline then maybe there's less of an inclination to get all weird about it and they just feel free to make a space movie, however it turns out.

It’s an absolute joy.  Compositionally, it isn’t complicated. But it’s infectious and just pulls you in immediately.  The sound quality is cracking good. 
 

I love Star Wars ripoffs and this is one of the best, with one of the best scores.

Depends.  Through a modern lens it would be considered really cheesy.  And it is dated both visually and in its 80s style.  And the villains are woefully undeveloped. 
 

The good news is that it has tons of heart. The Luke Skywalker story of dreaming of getting off the boring life he was born into is well done. The romance is sugary, but endearing with great chemistry.  Supporting roles by Robert Preston and Dan O’Herlihy are superb. 
 

Director Nick Castle (who played Michael Meyers in the original Halloween) is a big softie. I met him at a convention, and he was one of the most fun celebs I’ve ever spoken with. He’s a big film score fan and he will often say he structured Last Starfighter almost like a musical.  The way the trailer park setting comes to life with its population of tertiary characters, along with the musical score does somehow feel like the narrative of a musical. 
 

Alien and tech designs are by Star Wars/ALIEN veteran Ron Cobb.  There’s a lot to enjoy on screen. 
 

Mostly, it’s a breezy family space movie with a lot of good natured sentiment.  I like it because it just easily makes me happy.

100% agree. It’s one of my favorite films of all time, a childhood classic, with a wonderful score. It was a great honour and a dream come true to interview Craig Safan and discuss TLS.

It's not because you won an Oscar that you're guaranteed a long and prosperous career, so I understand her wanting to choose her next project carefully.

 

But it still might not work out, and she may regret not accepting a juicy payday (I'm assuming) for 'Starfighter.'
