Most complaints about his music often seem to stem from the fact that he scores a LOT of movies, many of which are relatively straightforward and/or quirky dramas, but I think he delivers when outside of that zone quite effectively. Plus, let us not forget that the finale to his (terrific) score to The Golden Compass almost quotes JW's JP theme (presumably a coincidence, but it always makes me think of dinosaurs when I hear it). Popular Post thomas_cdvault 216 Posted April 22, 2025 Popular Post Posted April 22, 2025 Wonderful news. Desplat's Harry Potter scores are great, I think we can expect something along those lines! And Godzilla is a lot of fun. Giacchino is good at evoking other composers' styles on a surface level (John Barry in Incredibles, John Williams in Rogue One), but I generally find his melodic writing very incoherent and unsatisfying. On the other hand, Desplat knows how to write a strong melody and arrange large orchestral forces. He's able to tap into that Williams mode of writing, without feeling like a pastiche or rip off. ddddeeee 565 Posted April 22, 2025 Posted April 22, 2025 Well this is exciting! I listen to Godzilla and Valerian all the time.
scallenger 665 Posted April 22, 2025 Posted April 22, 2025 Yeah I was around back when we were all excited for his Deathly Hallows scores and I remember being a bit disappointed, especially with the lack of adapted Williams material in interesting ways. But I guess we forget the franchise had jumped the Williams train a long time ago by that point. But then again so has Jurassic, where even Williams himself abandoned most of his own material in Lost World. I think it's important to temper expectations of him adapting Williams on this score and just see what he can do on his own, ala Godzilla, Golden Compass, and other scores mentioned here. thomas_cdvault and Paul M. Popular Post Edmilson 12,417 Posted April 22, 2025 Popular Post Posted April 22, 2025 Yeah, I think it's a great choice. Certainly better than Gia or Brian Tyler. I really like when AD goes outside of his comfort zone of quirky little valtzes for Oscar nominated dramas, as in Godzilla or Valerian. thomas_cdvault, Paul M. Grenon and Tom Guernsey 3
Knight of Ren 1,560 Posted April 22, 2025 Posted April 22, 2025 Quite an unexpected choice but I'm really looking forward to it. I'm a big fan of Desplat's scores for action/adventure/fantasy films so this should be great!
Popular Post crumbs 16,069 Posted April 22, 2025 Popular Post Posted April 22, 2025 WOW! Shocked but stoked with this news! Unexpected but makes complete sense given Desplat's involvement with Edwards on Godzilla/Rogue One, and also Williams holding Desplat in high esteem. Surprising how secretive this reveal was kept until now. Very curious to hear what a Desplat Jurassic Park score sounds like! Will, a good little monkey, Chewy and 5 others 8

Popular Post crumbs 16,069 Posted April 22, 2025 Popular Post Posted April 22, 2025 Quote using a "mainly orchestral" score with help from a 105-piece orchestra and a 60-piece choir. That's a big choir! I figured the score would lean more towards the tone of The Lost World but the heavy choral flavour intrigues me. Maybe the big new mutant will have some hellish choral leitmotif. Popular Post ddddeeee 565 Posted April 22, 2025 Popular Post Posted April 22, 2025 This might be silly, but could Desplat/his management have requested his involvement not be announced until everything was done and dusted? Popular Post crumbs 16,069 Posted April 22, 2025 Popular Post Posted April 22, 2025 I kinda hope the score leans more percussive, considering neither Davis nor Giacchino really followed TLW's lead in that respect. 3 minutes ago, Tallguy said: Is this the least surprising surprise announcement? True, but I don't think there's a huge level of continuity in the scores for these films, particularly in the World scores. A couple of themes from JP1, but that's it. I'm happy for Desplat to discard Giacchino's material in favour of new themes and ideas. I wouldn't think of this as a fourth World film; it's really a 7th Jurassic film, and the start of a new sub-series for Universal (heaven knows how many sequels they're already planning...) Luke Skywalker 2,387 Posted April 22, 2025 Posted April 22, 2025 Well all giacchino scores have good continuity between them, more than williams did with his two scores.

Certainly, there's a fair amount of shared material between the three scores, even though they're quite stylistically different. Jurassic World is a very Williams-esque score. Fallen Kingdom leans much more heavily in the monster movie direction. Lots of fun. Dominion is... not very good. New characters and story (as new as a 7th film can be), so it makes sense to go in a new direction with the music.
Popular Post ddddeeee 565 Posted April 22, 2025 Popular Post Posted April 22, 2025 I'm a big fan of Desplat, but he's been in a bit of a slump recently, scoring movies that push him into territory he's already covered 100 times. Thor 9,363 Posted April 22, 2025 Posted April 22, 2025 Of course it's Desplat. Out of the many thousands of composers out there, I only had FOUR I didn't want it to be. And it turned out to be one of those four. On the flipside, he's at least the 'least bad' of those. I went through all of Desplat's catalogue about two years ago, and have - I think - 9 of his scores in my digital collection. That's more than can be said about the other three. So in that respect, it helps a little. But just a little. Now we just have to wait and see how it turns out. The proof is in the pudding. Chewy, Quppa, Pieter Boelen and 3 others 4 1 1

Popular Post crumbs 16,069 Posted April 22, 2025 Popular Post Posted April 22, 2025 Just nice to see a major tentpole Hollywood score that isn't done by an RCP disciple or Giacchino, honestly. And I say that as a (mostly) fan of what Gia did for the last two Jurassic scores. Is this Desplat's first major summer popcorn score since Godzilla in 2014?!
