Sound quality question

Recommended Posts

I’m not sure where else to post this, but I value this community’s ears; I have recently been checking out the recent Vaughan Williams symphonies cycle by Andrew Manze and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Is it just me, or does something sound off about this release of the 3rd and 4th symphonies? Hard to describe it, but compare how it sounds on Apple Music or Spotify, vs the preview clips on Presto Music... IMO, the Presto ones sound fine, but something seems very different (very compressed? or almost like there’s a duplicate layer of the audio over it, or something) about what is available on the more mainstream digital music services.

The beginnings of tracks 5, 7, and 8 are good for comparing. Anyone else hearing what I’m hearing, or am I going crazy?

Holy cow that sounds terrible. Definitely sounds like a phase issue or almost like the same track was overlayed on top a few milliseconds off. Wow!

Do you pay for the spotify account?  The free version is compressed which is fine for pop music that makes up 99.999% of their market but noticeable with high fidelity acoustic music.

Yeah this isn't compression or bit-rate issues that typically plague streaming platforms, this is some unique issue.
