I want to create a London Symphony Orchestra playlist on my phone so I'm going to add all scores I own that were performed by the LSO (even non JW scores like Willow) but am unsure which of his scores were performed by the LSO. All I know for sure are:

Star Wars 1-6

Superman

Dracula

Raiders

Monsignor

Am I missing any?

Thanks!

Chamber of Secrets

Is that really a JW score or is it more William Ross? 🤪

Jk but that's strange that only COS was performed by the LSO. Which ones performed Sorcerer's (or in this case Philosopher's) Stone and Prisoner of Azkaban?

Also I believe Deathly Hallows 1 and 2 were by the LSO as well

What does it say in the LLL booklet? They usually list the dates and where the score was preformed

Just London studio musicians. I believe.

The Fury OST album IIRC

Yes, and if I remember correctly, Williams had a few spare recording sessions left after completing the recording of Superman, so he used those for the Fury OST.

And I think Fiddler wasn't performed with the LSO either.

According to Wiki, he used the LSO.

I remember him talking about using the LSO for FIDDLER... in a radio interview, in 1976.

No.

I'm pretty sure he used "members of the LSO", which, in my books, is the LSO.

According to an "AI overview" (whatever that means), the score was recorded with "former members of the LSO", so... go figure.

Be off with you, scurvy knave!

COS is 100% JW... and it's a better score than PS.

I'm pretty sure that PS, and POA were the LSO, but due some sort of contractual issues, they could not be billed as the LSO.

The one's that were so bad they got sacked?

MY OH MY!!!

NO, the London Symphony Orchestra did not perform on Fiddler on the Roof!  This was stated in Didier Deutsch's liner notes for the 30th anniversary edition of the score, but it was never true!

NO, Williams had not even seen Superman yet when The Fury's LSO album was recorded, let alone written or a recorded a drop of music for it! (click)

FINALLY, the LSO's website has a discography page that lists all the scores they performed on:

Booklet says Fiddler just used London session musicians, only 12 of whom were LSO members.

Wait a second... Not to hijack here but @Jay I could hug you right now... not sure why I didn't think to look here before but this is the first time I've seen concrete dates for the prequel trilogy recording dates! It's always been vague mentions of the week of such and such. Or one date on a photo. Maybe I'm just slow but yeah thanks for that!

EDIT: To be clear I've been given the dates For Ep 1 & 2 before but this is the first time I think I've had a source beyond a tip from someone.

Ross only helped adapt Philosopher's Stone material and Chamber of Secrets suites of the new themes into movie cues. Besides, JW scored a lot of scenes (flying car, escaping the spiders and, yes, the Chasing the Snitch section of the Quidditch match, and I'll die on that hill!).

Anyway, according to here, JW's compositions that were recorded with the LSO are:

  • Bassoon Concerto “The Five Sacred Trees”
  • [arr.H.Mancini] The Disaster Movie Suite
  • Dracula - film music
  • Essay for strings
  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - film music
  • Flute Concerto
  • The Fury - film music
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - film music
  • Hook - film music : The Flight to Neverland
  • Jaws - film music : shark theme
  • Jurassic Park - film music : theme
  • Monsignor - film music
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark - film music
  • Saving Private Ryan - film music : Hymn to the Fallen
  • Schindler’s List - film music
  • The Sorcerer’s Stone - film music : Hedwig’s theme
  • Star Wars - film music : excerpts:
    • Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
    • Episode 2: Attack of the Clones
    • Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith
    • Episode 4: A New Hope
    • Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back
    • Episode 6: Return of the Jedi
  • Star Wars - Galaxy’s Edge Symphonic Suite
  • Superman, The Movie - film music
  • Trumpet Concerto
  • Violin Concerto

Some scores in there were actually recorded in the US first (Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, E.T., Hook, Jaws, Jurassic Park), so their presence here is probably for an album of John Williams themes or something rather than the actual score.

...and you have 'Call of the Champions' made during the scoring sessions of SW-AOTC.

...but this recording was never commercially released.
