John Williams never looked his age. But now that he's ill, yes... he does look his age. It's probably normal for someone who's 93 to have that posture and that look.

That look of a hunted animal, as if to say: get me out of this body, please.

 

Seeing him like this feels like seeing Superman after exposure to kryptonite... we're just not used to it.

When people stop forcing themselves to smile in photos, it means they're unwell.

It looks like he’s lost some weight, and he generally does seem a little more frail, but it’s wonderful to see him standing. We already know he’s mentally still quite sharp, based on how he was at the LA concerts earlier this year. So all things considered, while I still don’t expect him to stand on a podium again, this looks like a good update. I also don’t think the family would’ve let it be posted if it wasn’t a positive light.

 

As for his facial expression, I’ve seen plenty of pictures of him posing with people over the years where he doesn’t give a full big smile. It’s just how he takes pictures. Not always, but it’s not unusual.

I think he looks pretty good, actually.  His smile isn't that different from other photos over the years.  He obviously hasn't been out in the sun in a while or stays out of it.  He's lost some weight, but nothing too out of the ordinary.  It appears he can stand on his own.  It is a dramatic change from late 2023 when he was in Pittsburgh (the last time I saw him in person), but all things considered I feel optimistic about it.  He's a fighter, people!

A random side note, but while we are talking about JW's age, I recently started watching Mad Men and its first season is set in 1960. The culture and society it depicts is such a long time ago it feels practically alien from today's viewpoint, and yet the maestro was in his late 20s at the time. He really is blessed with a long healthy life.

I love this man but what I’m seeing is the sort of deterioration we’ve seen time and time again with old people. Physical, I mean. Williams had a consistent old guy look for decades which is what happens to us all if we live long enough and take care of ourselves, but as you near the end the changes are rapid and unsettling. He still looks alright but the change is evident. I think we were all used to his old guy look he’s rocked for decades.

His conducting days may be almost certainly done, but I see no reason from these photos to believe he's done with writing music.

Undeniably the year's been an adjustment for how we view the old man and it would be silly to say he looks as good as ever, but he looks okay and it's legitimately a positive that he can get on his feet for a group photo. It'd still have been lovely if his family were crowded around his wheelchair. I know we'd all love to see him dancing around like Dick Van Dyke at nearly 100.

At least writing for himself. The piano concerto hopefully won't be the last notes we hear from him. Movie soundtracks are another story. I wouldn't dare ask the man in that photo for anything but there's almost a year before Spielberg's movie is out and it's already wrapped so he could probably pace it out if he felt like it. I'll be slightly disappointed if not but I have zero expectations.

The same happened to Sean Connery. He looked incredible up until his 80s then age finally caught up to him.

Time will tell, of course, but Stéphane Denève said recently that he's recovering quite well, and actually has hopes of conducting in Berlin again...

What makes you think no-one at JWfan has any "medical training". What is "medical training", anyway?

To the trained eye, a photograph can say a lot.

One doesn't need "medical training" to see that JW is frail, and quite ill. Despite this, it's still an encouraging picture.

If you can't see this, then you need "medical training".

I always think what do people expect? He is 93 years old! How many 93 years old men do you know? He is looking good for his age. Be happy that he is still with us and don’t expect him to look like he is 70 years old. He is blessed to have such a long and fulfilling life. And we are blessed that he still walks on planet earth.
