La-La Land Records and Paramount Pictures proudly present a remastered CD reissue of renowned composer John Williams’ original motion picture score to the 1977 dramatic feature film thriller BLACK SUNDAY, starring Robert Shaw and Bruce Dern, and directed by John Frankenheimer.

 

A white-knuckle suspense thriller chronicling a diabolical terrorist attack on the Super Bowl via airborne blimp needed a score to wind the film’s ticking clock tension with precision. At the time, Williams’ recent FAMILY PLOT and legendary JAWS scores made him a perfect choice to tackle BLACK SUNDAY. His score to the film is pitch-perfect – a winding tapestry of percussion and ominous atmosphere that had the audience on the edge of their seats, while the inner conflicts of the characters are explored through emotionally resonant melodic material. The composer’s remarkable ability to balance action and suspense with human drama is on full display within this remastered presentation of the Maestro’s few forays into the political thriller genre.

 

Reissue Producer Mike Matessino has newly mixed and mastered the score from first-generation 16-track analog scoring elements, transferred in high resolution by Paramount Archives. Following the main Score Presentation, tracks of Additional Music feature three pieces of source music Williams composed for the film and the original end credits composition, “The End,” without the percussion track. This was considered as an alternative before it was decided to track tense action music over the credits. The program concludes with the music as presented for the ending of the picture, opening with the revised ending of “The Explosion.” This short cue was recorded long after the main scoring sessions. As no master element could be located, the cue is presented from the original mono dubbing stem for the film, processed for stereo.

 

This Limited Edition CD re-issue of 3000 units features all new, in-depth liner notes from writer Jeff Bond and winning new art direction by Jim Titus.

There's no concert suite of any sorts from this score. The one recorded by the City of Prague Philharmonic for that late 1990s Silva Screen compilation was put together unofficially and it's just a series of cues pieced together with no connective tissue. There was much less control over those things back then.

I was afraid so. Thank you for the clarification. But still for me it is quite a good collection of highlights from the score.

Everyone seems to be writing this off as simply a remaster. It quite clearly says Mike has remixed it too, from fresh high res transfers. Sounds like a similar situation to the Jaws score tracks. 

Anyway. Bring it on! Wonderful to have this out there again, and I look forward to seeing what Mike has done with the material.

Ok. To set that clear. For all those audiophiles out there who don’t own an edition of that score yet: Of course this is at least a "should-have". We are talking here about Williams' latest orchestral score of the pre Star Wars era which has all the elements of a great Williams score. Except maybe a radio hit main theme which puts it still in line with masterpieces like War of the Worlds. 

 

Still I will pass on this one since I am fine with the old album.

Yes, of course, the kickass culmination of the disaster scores, with a relentless drive and action focus without interchangeable romantic or contemporary light music digressions. Too bad so much of it was unused/tracked over, JW had a ton of fun scoring it close to picture as seen when restored to picture.

It does feel like remastered reissues are becoming as inevitable as premiere expansions of difficult scores (difficult regarding tapes). If studios and producers are finding 1st gen tapes hidden away, they're going to be a mixture of scores that have never been expanded, and scores that were expanded using inferior materials a decade or two ago.

To the complainers, no one's forcing you to purchase anything. Last I checked, it's not a human right to get every film score you ever hoped and dreamed of!

Just listened to the samples on my AirPods and wow!  So crisp and clean, it sounds like it was recorded last week!  I have the FSM but I’ll definitely be ordering this.  Both scores staring Robert Shaw released in the last week as well.

Tried a quick comparison but didn't really hear any significant differences from the FSM so far aside from being quieter.

Quieter? But how am I meant to complain it’s mixed more loudly than the prior release? Honestly. Some people.
 

But seriously. Lucky enough to have original but will almost certainly plump for the upgrade. I always figured this was an older release that might benefit from newer technology. Plus this surely must be long out of print? If for that reason alone it has to be well worth a new release and if they can tart up the sound then hurrah!

 

Need to dig up a copy of the suite mentioned earlier. It might not be official or properly reworked with linking material but it’s actually a great summary of the score and features all the best bits in a fairly decent performance. Plus it reminds me of the old days when we only got glimpses of those unreleased JW scores. If I remember rightly, the original suite was 13 minutes but silva cut it down to 9/10 minute when they put it on later compilations.

Seems like yesterday I was having a pleasant email exchange with Lukas Kendall about some detail of the FSM release, hearing it and thinking "this is the modern era of remastered scores." On the fence to order the LLL, will wait to hear more on the podcast.
