So the leaks were indeed true, the theatrical cut of Star Wars is returning to theaters!

Considering we already know about the other two films being worked on, I guess those'll likely either be returning to theaters as well, or at least releasing in some form (4K boxset please!)

I guess it's been an open secret for a few months now, right? And with the leaks escalating lately, i.e. the lothcat out of the bag, they had no choice but to finally confirm it.

 

From what I've seen, these will look glorious. And I really hope that by then, physical media won't be dead, Disney won't be bought by Netflix and Trump tarrifs won't have made these unaffordable and/or illegal to buy.

I was under the impression that they're doing a 7.1 surround mix based on the original Dolby Stereo track.

So my theory with this is that yes it's the original cut but it's going to be more of a rebuild of the original. I think they'll be taking original elements and compositing shots digitally so we get the original version, but without matte lines or transparency issues.

 

I also think this is for the best. Preserves the original work and presents an idealised version of the original theatrical cuts.

 

This is based on the leaks included raw VFX plates and detailing additional cleanup work.

I also hope any eventual 50th Anniversary physical release of the OT will take this restoration work as the backbone for a fully remastered version of the Special Editions. I've no doubt that they will remain the official canon versions and they deserve better treatment than the current discs (Empire and Jedi particularly).

 

Just hope they take this opportunity to finally do it right.

Including plates for deleted scenes, I wonder if those would be included in 4k in a hypothetical physical release, including the unaltered Jabba scene and General Tagge mentioning Sith that was shown at Celebration 2017

My realist side says it's going to be an upgraded, perfectly restored, clean, smooth, 15K version of the original cut. Not the actual way it truly looked.

 

Either release it completely as is was in 77, or don't bother.
