I'm looking forward for Disclosure Day and I hope Gia's Spiderman 4 is as fun as his first two (the third one is meh).

 

I also hope JNH has something else aside from yet another Hunger Games, I think he already said everything that needs to be said with the previous scores. At the same time, I fear that it might be another crime thriller with a minimal synth score.

 

Zimmer will probably appear in some other stuff aside from Dune (especially because I'm sure they'll end up pushing Dune to 2027), but it will probably be some smaller projects in the line of Eden or Ella McCay. Maybe the new Zack Snyder movie?

 

Silvestri in Avengers mode is always nice. Looking forward for his Dr Doom theme.

 

Göransson already has an Oscar nomination pretty much guaranteed for the next year with The Odyssey (unless the movie sucks ass). It might not be the kind of score that is well loved around JWFan, but it'll be exactly what the Academy likes. If he also wins for Sinners this year and The Odyssey on the next, he will become a 4 time Oscar winner in about 14 months! It's the same amount of Oscars as John Barry and just one less than John Williams.

 

And where is Powell?!? He's not really taking another sabbatical year until HTTYD 2 next year, right? He's gotta do something this year, as he's too young to take sabbaticals.

 

Come on, a year without Powell is a sad, drab, boring, unfunny year 

 

Overall, the best thing about this year is a new John Williams score, something that should be impossible, so it's nothing short of a miracle. Aside from that... 🫤.

I don't know this composer and I don't know this movie, but judging by the music it's some kind of Nordic historical epic.

 

Anyway, this is a mostly somber and melancholic medieval and viking score. Most of it is made of dark and sad music, with some really heavy action music occasionally, especially at the end.

 

It's pretty modern too, as in an older style of music filtered through modern lenses. Think Bear McCreary's scores for God of War, Masters of the Universe and parts of Rings of Power. If you enjoyed these scores, you may as well enjoy this one too.

 

Also: the composer's name is Lauri PORRA?!? That ensures she (I assume she's a lady) will never get taken seriously by Portuguese-speaking people

Porra wrote a beautiful score in 2024, Stormskerry Maja. It's also a bit somber, but there are a couple of tracks that rise to fantastic highs. It's really wonderful.

I did listen to it and as I was expecting from Guðnadóttir, I did not like it. She did a solid job with the first Joker but after that I haven't heard a single thing that I liked from her. It seems that Bragnah has stopped working with Doyle. His next project will be scored by Volker Bertelmann. Both Guðnadóttir and Bertelmann seem like the opposite of Doyle in musical terms which is very disappointing after all the great collaborations with Doyle. The score for Haunting in Venice was actually distracting when watching the movie and did not fare well on album.

That's very disappointing. I didn't watch Haunting in Venice, but have to admit that I had no interest in the score as Guðnadóttir's style isn't for me. Strange that he'd go in such a different direction as to the type of music after clearly being a fan of orchestral scores. I hope they haven't fallen out. Hiring a different composer on one project could be a hiccup or scheduling clash but two in a row and you start to wonder. Hopefully Doyle gets something soon, he's not scored anything for a couple of years...

Danny Elfman - Send Help

 

The first score of 2026  that I've heard!  I liked it a lot!  There's a lovely theme that gets a lot of variations, some nice guitar and vocal work, and some suspense parts have a cool off-putting synth effect I enjoyed.  After wrapping up quite nicely, we get another new sound with the End Credits piece, and then the Bonus Track is lovely as well.  Cool album, definitely of the Elfman scores of the past 10 years I've enjoyed the most along with White Noise.

Can't say that it made an impression on me..

Elfman's style was fresh back in the 80s and 90s, now it sounds too mechanical to me, like an autopilot or something as we say..

I didn't hear any theme(s), but again, I was doing something simultaneously (surfing the net ) and maybe didn't notice it.

That's why when I listen to a score, I'd like to listen to only this and not doing anything else at all. Just clear my mind and listen to the music.

It's nowhere near the level of his glory period from the 80s and 90s obviously, it's just good compared to what scores we are getting in recent years from anybody, good compared to Elfman's own output over the past 10 or 20 years

Bear McCreary - God of War Sons of Sparta

 

This album just came out this week, and I just listened to it and.... I LOVED IT!  It's cool to get a score like this from Bear because its not like his film / TV music, its more like a "proper" video game score... and yet, aspects of his film / tv work shine through, so its a really cool blend of styles.  I like the retro stylings a lot of this has as well as the huge choir stuff that's been  staple of his fantasy stuff for a while now.  I really just enjoyed the whole album all the way through... well, until this pop song thingy plays at the very end.  Don't need that!

Yeah, it's a great score and very different from what you would expect if you know his scores for the other God of War games. Really catchy main theme too. And I agree that the song is bad, and I think the album works better if you move the first track to the end right after Flute of Calliope.

 

Anyway, here are a couple of scores that I have also really enjoyed from 2026 so far:

Gorgeous score. The story seems somewhat similar to Society of Snow, and the music is kind of similar to that one, with a beautiful main theme representing the tragedy but also the humanity of the story and the characters. Arnau Bataller tends to do more ambiental stuff most of the times, so to hear a score as melodic and orchestral as this one was a treat, and it's already contender for one of the best scores of the year!

 

Came upon this out of pure chance because the cover grabbed my eye, and I must say I really loved it. The album might be too long for some, but I really like the blend of electronics, synths and even EDM beats with the organic vocals that inform the main theme. It's atmospheric at parts, but also quite intense at others, especially in some of the boss fights, and it's a showcase once again that videogame scores are usually more interesting and varied nowadays that scores for mainstream films. I'd recommend checking out MIO's theme to see if you'll like the score.

8 years on from Celeste and still waiting for another Raine score to blow me away like it did.  Decided to give some of her biggest albums since Celeste another chance and while there's plenty to like, there isn't that "wow" factor of Celeste.  Chicory (A Colorful Tale album) is closest but at 2 1/2 hours it doesn't sustain that high level of excellence throughout like Celeste does from start to finish.  It's such a shame Earthblade was canceled cause that had the best shot at being the next Celeste I think.

Super Mario Galaxy is what I'm excited for. And obviously Disclosure Day. Now for some less-iterated options:

 

I assumed Eggers' new movie Werwulf will have another visceral score by Robin Carolan - I thought the last two were great.

 

I'm interested in Steven Price's long-absent score to Coyote vs Acme which is finally getting released this year, though I'm not a big fan of Price outside of Gravity.

 

I have high hopes for Pemberton's Masters of the Universe.

 

We're getting a new season of the Netflix Avatar this year - I thought Takeshi Furukawa did a great job on the first season.

 

Marvel's Vision TV show VisionQuest is coming this year and made by the same people as Star Trek Picard season 3, so a big score by Stephen Barton is a real possibility. And Daredevil Born Again had a great first season score so I'm expecting more in that vein for season 2.

 

Over in Japan, we're getting The Ninth Jedi's full anime, which I expect to be composed by Yugo Kanno, who is usually very good. There's a new Gundam movie with music by Hiroyuki Sawano, who also has a Fate series ongoing. A new season of Chained Soldier by Kohta Yamamoto - not a consistent composer in my opinion but I thought this score was great even if I won't be caught dead watching the show. And of course, Frieren is airing right now.

@Stark Great choices all around! I think regarding Marvel's VisionQuest, it could be scored by Christophe Beck. He already did WandaVision and Agatha All Along, and he seems to have a good relationship with Marvel as well. I wouldn't mind him doing that score because I would like for him to expand on his Vision Theme from WandaVision!

 

Also from Takeshi Furukawa we have Planet of Lana II releasing this week. His score for the first game was great so I'm really looking forward to the new one.

 

Aside from Avatar and One Piece, another Netflix show that's supposedly having a second season being released this year is Blue Eye Samurai, and I loved what Amie Doherty did for the first season, so also interested in that one.

 

Oh, and the third season of Euphoria with Zimmer and Labrinth doing the score should be quite interesting!

 

Regarding anime, I'm also curious about The Ninth Jedi as well as the new The Ghost in the Shell anime. And although it's from a movie from alst year, I really hope they release the soundtrack for Kimetsu no Yaiba: Infinity Castle Pt. 1 this year!

Possible of course, but both of those had the same showrunner and VisionQuest doesn't - and Marvel seems to let the TV guys hire whoever they want to score.

Ohh that one as well! Season 7 album was disappointing especially because it was such a long season, so I hope McCreary offers a solid album presentation for the final season. The two volume approach like he did with the first season would be great.

Sounds like you're judging the score just based on the album. I think several lovely versions of this main theme were left off that album, sadly. I had the same reaction as Jay based on seeing the film and experiencing the score in context. Then when I listened to the official album on Spotify I was waiting for more variations on the main theme which I remembered from the film, and alas they never really came.

Currently I am enjoying this more and more.

The main theme is not too exciting but beautiful. The title track gave me a little Edward Scissorhands or Mirror Mirror vibes. But after that it's at last again a joyous orchestral Rombi score.

Listened to that score a few days ago and I really liked it as well! Heartwarming, orchestral and emotional all around.

 

I've been also enjoying this score for the last couple of days:

Awful movie, awesome score. I don't get why they hadn't release it until now, I guess the songs are more attractive than the actual score for the target audience. I think I might like this even more than Saltburn, and shows a really elegant side from Willis. There are some darker passages and those are honestly the lowest points of the score, but whenever the main themes are on display, this is a really elegant and beautiful score, much better than what the film deserved.

Also, this score really got slept-on due to THE BRIDE's poor turnout, but this might be the most melody-driven material I've heard from Guðnadóttir!

Agree on The Bride! I'm not really a fan of Gudnadóttir's work, but this score was better than I expected from her.

 

About Project Hail Mary, without having watched the film I think the 2-hour album feels a bit too long and meandering in its middle section, but it slowly won me over and it made me interested in checking out the film towards the end of the album. The choral work here is stunning and I will probably be revisiting it soon!
