trailer for film 2

Looks like it'll be a great canvas for Tyler to work on.

Really hope they don't use as many needle drops as they did in the previous film instead of material by Tyler.

The "Drivin' Me Bananas" cue not being in the film is still such a shame.

I maintain that there'll be no or few needledrops after the unilateral poor reception to them in the first film.

New trailer for movie 2, with some words about Tyler's score (it's currently being recorded with a 70 piece orchestra).

I'm glad Brian Tyler is continuing despite his recent health problems.

At least he's recovered, which is great

This will probably be the first movie I see in our city's new theater!

When is your new theater inaugurating? Or has it been inaugurated already? Because I can suggest a few better movies to see in theaters before Mario 2 comes out...

Late March.

And it wouldn't be right for it to be a really great movie, for the first, seeing as the last movie I watched in the old theater we had (that was killed due to Covid) was Rise of Skywalker... it just wouldn't be proper ;)

“Who?”😉

In all seriousness, this is looking very good. In fact, this has the potential to surpass the first film. For the love of God and all that is good, PLEASE let there be NO needle-drops.

I see some of these credited for arranging on imdb for the first film, I wonder if this is the same or they wrote actual cues this time.

Interesting, usually Tyler doesn't credit the additional composers in individual tracks, this is the second times he's done it (first being Transformers One)

Just finished my first listen of this. I think Tyler does a good job of continuing the energy of the first score, reatining the style and themes but adding some new ones. His Bowsy Jr theme is a bit derivative, probably by design, from his own Bowser Theme, but I really like the themes for Rosalina and Yoshi, even tough the later is not used that much. The first 4 tracks are essentially suite arrangements of the new themes, with the Prelude track being an abridged version of 2 Player Game from the first game I think, highlighting his Mario theme.

And there are also lots of legacy themes sprinkled through, that will surely be a treat to Nintendo fans. I really enjoyed the love he shows for the Mario Galaxy score with some tracks being used many times such as:

Spoiler

-the title theme appearing several times like at the end of You're Coming with Me or opening 1up

-Luma and the Stardust Festival in Star Shower

-rosalina's comet observatory a couple of times in Rebuilding the Castle

-of course, Gusty Garden Galaxy making a couple of gorgeous appearances in tracks like A New World, The Flight Deck or Family is Forever

-and then the first half of 1up is a suite of many of the different galaxy themes from the first game

and many more from the game but also other games from the franchise like Super Mario World, Mario 64 and a few others, some of which I probably missed on a first listen

Yeah, I think I noticed the theme from Yoshi's World in Taking Care of the Kingdom Isn't Easy.

About Star Fox, I'm not familiar with the original soundtracks, but is that the rock section that appears in The Flight Deck?

iam8bit has the CD/vinyl/cassette releases again: https://www.iam8bit.com/collections/the-super-mario-galaxy-movie

Curiously tracks 3 and 24 have different titles on the CD and vinyl covers compared to the digital release: 'Yoshi the Fantastic' instead of 'Yoshi on the Go' and 'Thank You Your Highness' instead of '1up'. EDIT: The track listings further down the page use the same names as the digital release, though.

The covers also have the same lowercase 'is' typo in 'Family is Forever' 😭

Just got back from seeing the movie. Unfortunately, some (IMO) really good music is missing from the soundtrack. Wish he would have just dumped basically everything on the album like he did the first time around.

Posted

The album is only 12 minutes shorter than the entire movie - is it wall-to-wall music or does the album have material not in the movie and vice versa?

Posted

It's close to wall-to-wall with one needledrop. Apparently some of the casino tracks (maybe diagetic?) are missing, I wonder if they were by another composer. I doubt any other music is missing?

Movie is good. The game music references are often longer than they were in the first film, and some of them get used very frequently.

If that Yoshi theme ("Yoshi On the Go") is a Brian Tyler original, it may just be the best thing he's ever written. I was sure at first that it must be from some game, but so far nobody has identified it as such. I'm a big fan of the games, but I'm surprised how much time I'm spending listening to that theme.

I know a lot of Mario music by heart and I don't recognize any theme in there, so unless it's from one of the Yoshi games (and nobody on the Mario wiki has identified such), I think it's original. A lot of rhythmic ideas are related to game tracks though - it's built from a lot of the same DNA, just not the themes.

Apparently there's a Super Mario World theme when they leave the desert which is absent, and also the 1-minute opening cue (a variation on Tyler's Rosalina theme) are also absent although the latter can be ripped from the movie's website. Not sure why they left these cues out when this is obviously not a shortened album.

Was just about to share the video. I'm still noticing new references with each listen and that has happened even with the score for the first movie where some of the references where so hidden that I didn't pick up on them until recently.

The new themes are slowly growing on me. Still disappointed that yoshi's theme is not used more because the suite arrangement is a banger. And Rosalina's theme is definitely the best of the bunch, and I love how Tyler blends it with his own Peach theme in Rebuilding the Castle!
