Pawel P. 910 Posted June 14, 2025 Posted June 14, 2025 The already mentioned Danish National Symphony Orchestra concerts dedicated to Williams are taking place from Thursday to Sunday. Of course, they are being filmed and will be released on CD and Blu-ray, like all the previous ones in their increasingly long film series. Below is the program. A few obvious ones, but also rarely performed pieces, including the first part of the Harp Concerto. I would prefer the second one (or rather both parts), but the selection is intriguing anyway. Most of the classics like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman or Harry Potter have already been played by this orchestra and released. John Williams - A Tribute 12., 13. & 14. JUNI 2025 KL. 19.30 15. Tom 6,673 Posted June 14, 2025 Posted June 14, 2025 Cool that the harp concerto is going to be performed. I wonder if it is literally just the Willows movement.

Tom 6,673 Posted June 14, 2025 Posted June 14, 2025 They picked the boring movement. Just eliminate Hook and you can do the whole thing.

Tom 6,673 Posted June 14, 2025 Posted June 14, 2025 I find it very good in the context of serving as the contrast and set up to the second movement. On its own, I think it is out of place. Sort of like the first movement of the second violin concerto. Great as a mood setter, but on its own it would feel very weird.

I can understand what you're saying. That's why I don't like to listen to individual movements of a concerto or a symphony. They were meant to be listened as a whole piece. Tom 1
Tom 6,673 Posted June 14, 2025 Posted June 14, 2025 Yes, to this. I do like that his concert materials are seeping into these concerts, but this concerto could easily be performed in full (scheduling-wise, anyway).

I take it you don't listen to Beethoven recordings either, since they were meant to be listened to live in a concert hall. Jurassic Shark and Martinland 1 1

I'm failing to understand your joke. I didn't said a thing about recordings, just about listening to individual movements versus the whole piece (a valid point for both live performances and recordings). Martinland 1

Theme from Jurassic Park 4 Nimbus 2000 from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone 5. Theme from Born on the Fourth of July 6. Theme from Schindler’s List 7. Theme from Jaws 8. Harp Concerto “On Willows and Birches”: On Willows 9. Viktor’s Tale from The Terminal 10. Theme from Seven Years in Tibet 11. Excerpts from Far and Away 12. Song for World Peace 13. igger6 1,044 Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Good job including "On Willows," but isn't this almost totally redundant with Berlin and Vienna? What else is unfilmed on here? BOTFOJ, Viktor's Tale, and Song for World Peace, I guess? P.S. It's been a while since I listened to On Willows and Birches, but I'm doing so right now, and holy cow! Is this the most tonal concert piece of the Maestro's career?

Is this the most tonal concert piece of the Maestro's career? I would say the Tuba and Oboe concertos are more tonal than not. I think too Essay for Strings, but I have not listened to that one in a while.

Escape_Velocity 77 Posted March 27 Posted March 27 A signature edition of Seven Years in Tibet really needs to be released. Still waiting for a crisp recording of that flute ending as opposed to the piano.

bollemanneke 4,321 Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Well, finished it. My biggest problem is the fact that ritardandos are hardly observed at all. Yes, I'm willing to admit Berlin might have taken things to the extreme, but this just isn't enough. Far and Away is particularly weird. Before the traditional suite is performed, they tacked on a love theme statement for solo recorder. Why? What they SHOULD have done is replaced that ridiculous oboe with same recorder in the beginning. The mix is both detailed and strangely… compressed? The album sequencing is, for the most part, pretty great, but the applause has been removed EXTREMELY CLUMSILY. Born on the Fourth of July and Song for World Peace are the best tracks, but on the whole, I don't really need more of this conductor, I think. BB-8 1

Bespin Copilot 10,735 Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Everything drags, completely devoid of energy or subtlety… wow. This is an horrible album. hornist 1
bollemanneke 4,321 Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I wouldn't go that far. Horrible is a word reserved for the City of Prague IMO.

I was at one of these concerts and I swear the conductor was humming loudly along to some of the pieces, very audible on the Jaws theme and Raider's March. It was very strange - maybe he didn't do it every night. Haven't heard the CD yet. I liked the program overall and the host gave very good context to all of the pieces (so even casual fans could follow, haha). bollemanneke 1
