Just announced! John Williams, the world-renowned composer and a dear friend of the LA Phil, has written a surprise tribute to celebrate Gustavo Dudamel’s 17-year tenure as Music & Artistic Director. Titled “Bravo Gustavo!”—the same name as the commemoration of Dudamel’s first 10 years with the LA Phil—this new fanfare showcases the orchestra’s trumpet section, honoring both the musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the enduring impact of Dudamel’s leadership.

“Bravo Gustavo!” will premiere on June 4 as a special addition to the “Gustavo Dudamel: Celebrating the Musicians of the LA Phil” program at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

What a great honor it is to have the best living composer in the world, write a piece for you, right?

Personally, I am surprised Williams hasn't written a piece yet  dedicated to his long time friend and collaborator Steven Spielberg.

Of course, he has written the scores for most of his films, but I don't feel it's the same..

This just in, the fanfare will feature a 3-minute violin cadenza in the middle of the piece.  Sources say that its inclusion, while disruptive, does not ruin the piece altogether.

This is great news! I sure hope a recording of this performance gets out, since there might not be a lot of other occasions for it to be performed. Unless Gustavo himself conducts it in the future? Or is he Williams-level humble and will shy away?

This was my first thought as well!! Couldn’t @Maestro let him know that his fans desperately need a new album with recent pieces and fanfares - conducted or overseen by him? 
It’s rare for him to do such an album unless there’s a specific musician attached, though.

 

Either way - and I say this every time - I just can’t believe we’re still living at a moment in history where new John Williams compositions are being performed/released! It’s unbelievable and I don’t take it for granted!

I just took a look at the program.  Williams's piece closes out the concert, which is sold out.  That should be a rousing end.
