So, I am about to see the first Spielberg film in theaters, in many years, later today at Noon. 

My mother took me to my first theatrical film, E.T. When I was Six. And my love of film, and film 
Music, started to seed. 

I think that, since her passing a year to this day, it’s appropriate to go see Disclosure Day as the first Spielberg movie I’ve seen in theaters since the last Indy, and is the first movie to get me back to theater since The Monkey. 

Almost like bookmarks for me as a connection that we had in film, or more precisely, the love she had for the love that I showed, for art and film, for the music and the connection to John Williams. 

So, it’s almost like the first film in theater with her, and the first film in years in the theater, without her. Just seems to be poetic right? She loved my love of film and theater, so this just seems the best way, to celebrate. 

This is an awful day to “celebrate”, but that I will. My
Mother was a lively person who loved to blend in but then secretly crack jokes, or one who would listen non stop to different Les Miserables recordings and variations. Or who would scream at me, bring me to attention and realizing I was being a cunt.  But then would explain to me why I was being that way. And then we would be joking about something else and all of life’s problems just drifted away in that moment. 

Besides the movie, this day will be spent in quiet remembrance.  

Life’s hard without that voice. 

Life’s been hard without Mom. 

I will forever love you Mom. 

Until we’re together again.

What did you think of the movie?

I had several issues with it.

 

It’s 35 mins too long.

ALL of the agents/fbi/gov't whatever were dumber than dirt.

Shit didn’t make sense. The whole religion side of things was silly. Actually it was all silly. Not everyone needs to be spoon fed a story. Let the audience put pieces together.

 

Literally when Jane is watching the footage of the dead aliens which anyone can CLEARLY see they aren’t people. But she has to ask “are they alive?” “are those

People” like Jesus Christ dude.

 

The scene when he is told not to go back to the house he immediately turns and stealthily runs towards the house and cops and then runs along the fence next to the cops and then behind the cops and only one is like “wtf”.

 

The second chunk of the movie was messy and slow (except the chase scenes). Don't even get me started about the phone breaking scene. I was like WHAT FUCKING MOVIE AM I SEEING?

 

Both of the protagonists  could've been stopped, literally, at any moment, with a gun but NONE of the OUT TO KILL agents knew how to fire a weapon, surround a building, search behind rocks, or blown down while they were all in an enclosed building TOGETHER and they KNOW WHEY THEY ARE STANDING............. shit was silly.

 

The animals looked like shit. The, this is going to sound terrible, actress that played her as a little girl, looked like she was straight out of Polar Express. The final alien I thought looked silly.

 

 

But

 

 

I liked it! It was too long but Emily blunt was phenomenal. Josh Connors was great. I could listen to Colin firth talk forever.

 

I really loved the cinematography, probably some of Spielberg's most inventive and long tracking shots.  The scene in the field, and the (god awful agents) fence scene when the camera goes around the fence, through the fence, into the cars window and settles on the drivers seat.... was incredible. The opening reveal shot of Emily's eye is actually a reflection in a mirror but as it pans out is a reflection of a reflection.

 

The music was great when it needed to be, but was mostly unforgettable. The chase music was great. The "animal" theme, which  is "listen" is great. The end credits continuation of "..listen" was really good.

 

Overall 7/10. This ranks in my top 15 SS movies I think without actually putting thought into it. It wasn’t anything great but it also wasn’t Lincoln, The BFG, and good god fuckin Tin Tin.

Entire experience however, circumstances.. 120/10.

Runtime was acceptable if not as economical as it could have been. First thirty minutes were rather sluggish, but not exactly egregious for a first watch.

The way you describe your mom — someone who could blend into a room and then crack jokes on the side, knew every version of Les Mis, could rip into you and then explain why, then have you both laughing five minutes later — that's a real, whole person, not just a memory. That kind of love, sharp and soft at once, clearly shaped how you love film too.

Going today, letting Williams' score hit you on this particular day, thinking of her — that's a solid way to hold both the grief and the love at once. Doesn't have to be a normal day to be the right one.

Life's hard without that voice. That doesn't run on a schedule. Be easy on yourself today especially.
