Sandor 459
Ouch! That's been a long time since I've hanged out here!So how's everyone doing? I'm am doing fine. I'm still happily married and have bought a house in July which I'm still working on. I've been made assistant director of 'my' school and that's also brought along it's requirements.BUT!I'm still crazy about movies and film music. My love for John Williams will never fade and I listen to his music every day. Just some things I saw this week...The Two Towers SE. Great! I love The Lord Of The Rings. It's just perfect. Classic and there is nothing I can say that can fully express my desire to see The Return Of The King. That movie has become so desirable for me, just like The One Ring itself...The Matrix Revolutions. I don't know why I love the Matrix trilogy. To me; it's great, although I understand the critisism. But it works for me on any level. The Azkaban trailer. Well actually I saw this two weeks ago. Sounds interesting (refering to Williams' music). I think Williams is creating a wonderful musical legacy for the Potter films that is truly underrated. His Harry Potter theme has become a genuine classic, but again, it doesn't get the praise it deserves...So what do you think about that? Is the Harry Potter music underrated?I'll try to post soon again and hopefully more interesting stuf!Oh Ricard! One last question. Some time ago (years actually) you promised me you would 'investigate' whether the song Sugar Blues from the film Some Like it Hot was written by John Williams. I'm 99% sure it is, but nobody acknowlegdes that. If you have, please look into it. For all the completists out there it must have certain value to know the truth...Bye,Roald

Hlao-roo 388
Hi, Roald, nice to have you around with us again, if only briefly.Although at one point I was pretty vocal about the virtues of John Williams's first Harry Potter score, I've since decided that, if I must compare them (I know many people find soundtrack comparisons infantile or arbitrary), Hook is a far more listenable work. The (questionably named) Hedwig's Theme aside, the melodies of the Hogwarts don't resonate with me as those of Neverland do. At one point in time, I was pretty insistent on the fact that great themes don't automatically imply a great score -- and, while I still argue that to some extent, I think that, as curdled as Williams's style has become in the last decade or so, it's the melodies that best distinguish one work from other. For me, the music of Harry Potter is too conventional-- it's much too full of standard mickey-mousing and generic bombast that sounds like anything Williams might write for Star Wars or Jurassic Park. For me, there needs to be distinctive musical soundscape. Juno Reactor aside, The Matrix series has it. For better or for worse, The Lord of the Rings has it. Maybe Williams can start with 'Azkaban'? I hope so.

There have been many movies released over the years that really begged for a classic, instantly recognizable theme (Spiderman, The X-Men or The Hulk come to mind), but never really delivered. I think Williams did with Harry Potter.Even The Lord Of The Rings doesn't have any really knock-out theme, but I agree that The Lord Of The Rings does have a uniquely, amazing soundscape, full of great, beautiful melodies and musical passages. I love the music for The Lord of the Rings very much. It's just as good as the music Williams wrote for the original Star Wars trilogy, although it doesn't contain any famous Main Title themes or Imperial Marches. Hook is one of my favorite scores. It gives a glimpse of how good Potter could have been speaking about the complete score, not merely the themes. Bye,Roald

I'm not particulary into the potter thing at all or the books, but i do love his first score for the "Paedophile's" stone. It's one of the few very modern JW scores that are in my top 10. A lovely variety of themes and colours. My favourite track being Platform nine and 3 quarters with Journey to hogwarts. ..I have to say that his second work for chambers was in my opinion considerably less inspiring than the first, apart from a few highlights and i dont think his heart was in that one so much. But here's hoping he goes in quite a different direction with the themes for the 3rd movie and starts bumping out new themes and variety like he did in the Star Wars movies. #SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,251
"Paedophile's" stone. I'm sorry, what???I have to say that his second work for chambers was in my opinion considerably less inspiring than the first, apart from a few highlights and i dont think his heart was in that one so much. I think his hear really was into it and that he wanted to do it, even though he did not have the time to do as good a job as he might have done.Remember, Williams was very busy in that time.Stefancos-

I think Williams is creating a wonderful musical legacy for the Potter films that is truly underrated. His Harry Potter theme has become a genuine classic, but again, it doesn't get the praise it deserves...The thing is,Williams has more and more to compensate on his soundtrack albums because of film editing these days. The Harry Potter scores don't seem as tight as the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones in the films, because of a lot of looping and tracking, but on the album they shine and are already classics in my book, and each of the cues on the c.d.'s are noteworthy. The way I listen to them is by mixing the cues of both scores as a double album in sort of loose chronological order of the respective events that occur in the books, and that makes a lot of continuous great music.K.M.
