Johnny knows quality

Check out what I found in an old National Geographic magazine! :) It was on the backcover of Vol. 160, No. 4, dated October 1981. It's got a cover article about the maiden voyage of the Space Shuttle Columbia in April of that year ;) .

I thought many of you would get a kick out of seeing this advertisement. It made me pause to think about the perceptions of John Williams at various stages in his career. At this point people had still yet to hear his score for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial let alone Schindler's List or Jurassic Park etc etc. Maybe he's working on E.T. in this very picture? :)

My apologies for the battered quality of the image - it is from a second/fourth-hand copy of the magazine after all. Also I had to reduce the size of the image to upload it, so the writing at the bottom may be a little unclear. If anyone wants any words or sentences clarified, just let me know and I'll post a 'translation' :).

Heh! I remember that ad. I also remember seeing it run in Newsweek on occassion around 1980-81. I probably have a back issue somewhere.

I wonder what score he's writing?

That's great! I didn't know John did "schnabbels" like that. As long as he doesn't appear on the Home Shopping Channel.

I think you need to write left-handed if you write a score while playing piano at the same time.

Alex Cremers - who's genuinely lefthanded.

That ad's awesome! It's almost as cool as the Löwenbräu ad he did back in the late '70s. ;)

Seriously though, what a find this is. Thanks for posting it for us, Cypher. As far as perception of Williams at the time of his ad, he was already a god amongst gods. If E.T. or Schindler's List had never happened, his legacy would have already been sealed. If I had come across this ad (and I wish I had, since we had a shedload of Nat. Geos in our house) I would have had this framed next to my bed when I was a young punk.

Löwenbräu? Did he do beer ads, or what?

?

?

Isn't Denon JVC too?

No.

I know they're in some way associated with one of those three-letter companies. I thought it was JVC.

Marian - who now wonders who it is.

"And if you call NOW you´ll get the revolutionary CD set >How to become a film composer< for free. Acclaimed composers like James Horner used this product to learn how to score a film brillantly" ;)

No beer ads, of course. That's what the " 8O " was for ;)

We'll know the Apocalypse is near when film composers starting shilling brew. My guess is the Media Ventures boys would be Schiltz spokesmen (quality endorsing quality) 8O

ambidexterous is the name folks. . .

Ren, who writes left handed and plays the piano with her right while writing stuff down..

Hm... why can't he be lefthanded and then just play with his right hand? I'm certainly righthanded and justplay things with my left if I feel the urge of playing and writing at the same time... or is there evidence that John is also righthanded?

Well, I'm glad so many of you have liked this ad. It sure is a blast from the past - John's even got colour in his hair! 8O. I just love the way that JVC product is conveniently, and ever so strategically placed in the background ;).

That would be neat if he is left-handed. However, this was a photo-shoot and they may have asked him to pose this way. I don't recall what hand he used to sign my Accidental Tourist CD with last summer...I was in too much awe that I got a chance to meet him and speak with him for albeit a few moments....

Actually Alex, when I studied conducting in university, we were taught the proper form is to always conduct with the baton in the right hand. Obviously it took some adjusting for me as I'm left-handed. Also, when conducting a choir, one may use both hands and eschew a baton altogether.

Thanks. Being a die-hard lefthanded person myself, I would find it very hard to do so.

That's a hauntingly big scoresheet. It seems to catapult up to infinitum. It is even scarier when you realize that you have to fill many of these pages completely only to represent a few seconds of music each (some of which the director will cut with lousy edits).

I play piano and for small things like notes I can write with my left hand. I was playing a romantic piano piece the other day and a person pointed out that my left hand, which plays accompaniment, had much more work to do than my right hand, which plays melody. And I realized that piano playing is like that most of the times, your left hand is being trained a lot and trained to work without looking at it and demanded to be more agile than the right hand. However, I just thing Williams was asked to pose like that in that photo :)
