Trying to get into John Barry....

Any reccomendations? I am especially interested in good complilation albums from different scores. I've recently only been introduced to the excellent Barry (and the Bond scores - and what great scores they are!), and I can't get enough of his luscious themes. Cheers. beerchug

I'd say that the best Bond score by John Barry is the one for 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'.

Utterly perfect, and you get previously unreleased music on the newest CD release.

An expanded Dances with Wolves album is coming soon. I'd get that. It's a great score.

And obviously you can't go wrong with any of Barry's Bond scores.

Oh man...I'll need to remember to get that Dances With Wolves CD. I don't have the score. Is it Varese? I've haven't heard much about it.

It'll be from Sony.

Two of my absolute favorite John Barry CDs (and I have almost all of them) are "Raise The Titanic" and "The Specialist."

You can get "The Specialist" dirt cheap at amazon here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00...3453083-6681754

Both are prime examples of Barry's lush sound, and "The Specialist" also has a huge range of styles, from Bond-ish action, to jazzy, sexy romanticism. It's the one I'd recommend.

Barry seems to have a thing for writing amazing scores to godawful movies, but don't let that stop you from enjoying the music.

Out of Africa, and Somewhere in Time,

his scores don't get any better than these two.

king Kong and Black Hole are good too if you can find them.

Agreed The Black Hole and King Kong are 2 of my favourites.I have both on c.d's but they are bootlegs(though I bought King Kong in a regular store)

IMO the best Bond scores are Goldfinger,You Only Live Twice and Moonraker

Nobody's recommending The Lion in Winter? I mean, I've got it, but it's been so long since I listened to it (or even knew where I put it last)...

It's a fantastic score, but I didn't notice any signifcant music already not on the cd. I think the new release is somewhat redundant.

I love Somewhere in Time, Out of Africa is a bit too wavey for mem but I've never really heard the whole score.

And Black Hole is great.

If you ask me The Lion In Winter is the best I've heard from Barry. But I completly forgot about it. ;)

Justin -Who needs to get that score too... :P

I bought Dances with Wolves just the other day, and its wonderful. I've always been a fan of Barry but that is my only CD of his. I'm going to expand to get the Lion in Winter and Out of Africa as Well. Both amazing scores. I don't really know enough about his others to comment.

If you want to hear some before you buy, listen to classic fm (Classicfm.com) on Monday May 31st because they're doing the top 50 movie soundtracks and his are always amongst them. Not to mention a lot of Williams in there too. :P

Because it's not a typical Barry's sound. Yet its sensational. Truly. Compared with other Barry's scores, it's very little melodic, something like what Close Encounters could represent in Williams' output. I wouldn't recommend Lion in Winter to lovers of lush and heavily melodic stuff Barry got loved for or to those who begin to get introduce to his realm, but the truth is tha Lion won him an Academy Award.

And Black Hole is stunning, a must for Barry's fans and space scores fans in general!!!! I don't have it cos I can't get it any where, but I haven't stopped hoping...

You should have waited, on the May 18th an expanded version of Dances With Wolves is coming out.

I would recommend The Last Valley even though it is a re-recording and you can't really go wrong with any of The Connery scored Bond Films he did although OHMSS is the best.

The Lion in Winter is probably my favorite Barry score; it's certainly one of his more invigorating pieces when set in juxtaposition to the style that he's known for now -- slow and romantic. He did return to form for The Specialist a few years ago. Just hearing that makes me wish he had done more of the current James Bond films. I'd recommend the Varese Sarabande and Silva Screen re-recordings, too. Both are well done, and complement the originals if you want to be a completist.

So...Could someone explain what music is on the Dances of Wolves extended CD that's not on the original? and is the cd needed?

Thanks for all the suggestions folks...I'm sure i'll find a good way to spend my monthly "leisure money" on some of the titles you mentioned - especially since i've been saving up for awhile.

Star up with Williams' "The Hollywood Sound" (1997, Sony Classics) compilation. Excellent selections from Oscar-winning scores of the past plus it has both major themes from John Barry -- if you consider Out of Africa and Dances With Wolves worth checking in. Williams and London Symphony perform them brilliantly, almost up to par with originals. Plus, "Star Wars" main titles on this compilation are second to none. -- and I admit I'm one of the very few who actually prefers this recording of SW main titles to any but original OST's.

Of the few bond scores i have (Thunderball, You only live twice and OHMSS) i prefer YOLT, it is a mixture of the two, without the repetitiviness of the 007 theme in thunderball and the creepy synth music from OHMSS... (but the three are great nevertheless)
