The Chronological Film Score Thread

How about Jaws 2 updated with the new Intrada release? I've looked and looked but can't seem to find anything that shows a good chronological order for all the available music on the 2-cd release.

The main program of the new Jaws 2 set is 100% in chronological order, and 100% complete.  Everything else is just alternates.

Maybe you can explain what you're looking for differently (A custom program with alternates mixed in between the film versions?  Boy, that  would have a lot of repetition!)

I thought the FYC had some alternates or different inserts? Or the OST was in suite form? The two albums certainly aren't quite identical.

From what I understand that is all tracking done by music editors and not alternate Newman compositions.

Ant-Man - Christophe Beck (2015)

01. Borombon*

02. Escape*

03. I'm Ready*

04. Old Man Have Safe [00:00 - 02:06]

05. Honey, I Shrunk Myself [00:00 - 01:54]

09. The Water Main [00:33 - End]

10. Escape From Jail

11. Ant 247 [00:59 - End]

12. Paraponera Clavata

15. I'll Call Him Antony

16. San Francisco, 1987

17. First Mission

18. Signal Decoy

19. Cross Gets Cross [00:42 - End]

20. The Water Main [00:00 - 00:33]

21. Antfiltration

22. Scott Surfs On Ants

23. CrossTech Break-In

24. Into The Hornet's Nest

25. A Center For Ants

26. Insecticide [00:00 - 01:25]

27. Fight Of The Bumblebee

28. Ants On A Train

29. Insecticide [01:25 - End]

30. Small Sacrifice

31. Escape*

32. Theme From Ant-Man

33. About Damn Time

34. Tales To Astonish!

*Source music cues

Unused music:

01. Ant 247 [00:00 - 00:59]

02. Tiny Telepathy

03. Your Mom Died A Hero

04. Cross Gets Cross [00:00 - 00:42]

Notes:

- The source music cues (Borombon, Escape, I'm Ready and Pink Gorilla) are all only used partially.

- Escape appears twice in the film, so I listed both appearances just for the heck of it.

- About the unused part of Ant 247: I'm 100% certain were that one is meant to go. Right after the end of Escape From Jail, in the film, you have a scene involving the ant N°247 which is unscored for 59 seconds, then features 00:59-End of Ant 247, so obviously, 00:00-00:59 from that track was meant to underscore everything in the scene before that.

- About Tiny Telepathy: while the music in that track doesn't appear anywhere in the film, there is music similar to the one heard at the beginning of that track in one scene where Scott learns to communicate telepathically with ants, so it fits with the title. There are actually two scenes involving the telepathy, one right after the other. I believe this is an alternate for the music heard in those scenes. The thing is, I've tried different ways to sync the music with both scenes, and it never quite works (though I strongly believe it was meant to underscore the first scene), so I think the music heard in the track was for a different edit of one of those scenes (or both). So this track should go between I'll Call Him Antony and San Francisco, 1987.

- About Your Mom Died Hero: I'm 99% certain that one is an alternate of San Francisco, 1987, for two reasons. Firstly, the title of the track suggest the music in it was meant to underscore the scene underscored by San Francisco, 1987 in the film, and secondly, the music heard in the Your Mom Died has basically the same structure (about 34 seconds of calm music as Pym tells Hope about her mother, then about 40 seconds of more dramatic music for the flashback sequence and finally, sorrowful music as we go back to present time) and thus fits the scene just as well. I'm thinking Beck originally went for a more action-oriented approach for the scene (Your Mom Died A Hero), but then eventually they decided to focus more on the tragedy of the scene (San Francisco, 1987).

A funny tidbit: Your Mom Died A Hero starts with Hank Pym's theme (which covers most of the track) and ends with the family theme, while for some reason, it's the other way around with San Francisco, 1987 (the track starts with the family theme (covering most of it) and ends with Hank Pym's theme)

- About the unused part of Cross Gets Cross: that's the only one I cannot place anywhere. I'm pretty sure it's a separate cue from the one heard from 00:42-end in that track, and was meant to underscore a different scene. Either a) it was meant to underscore a scene that is left unscored in the final film (but all the scenes with Cross have music in them, so that's not possible) or b) it's an alternate for a cue in the film (there's one scene, which is about 40 seconds long, in which I think the cue would work well, which would place it between Become The Hero and I'll Call Him Antony) or even c) it was written for a deleted scene.

- Some of the music microedited out of First Mission can be found in the end credits of the film.

So in the end, after all this, we have:

01. Borombon

02. Escape

03. I'm Ready

04. Old Man Have Safe [00:00 - 02:06]

05. Honey, I Shrunk Myself [00:00 - 01:54]

06. Pink Gorilla

07. Honey, I Shrunk Myself [01:54 - End]

08. Old Man Have Safe [02:06 - End]

09. The Water Main [00:33 - End]

10. Escape From Jail

11. Ant 247

12. Paraponera Clavata

13. Pym's Lab

14. Become The Hero

15. Cross Gets Cross [00:00 - 0:42]*

16. I'll Call Him Antony

17. Tiny Telepathy

18. San Francisco, 1987

19. Your Mom Died A Hero (Alternate)

20. First Mission

21. Signal Decoy

22. Cross Gets Cross [00:42 - End]

23. The Water Main [00:00 - 00:33]

24. Antfiltration

25. Scott Surfs On Ants

26. CrossTech Break-In

27. Into The Hornet's Nest

28. A Center For Ants

29. Insecticide [00:00 - 01:25]

30. Fight Of The Bumblebee

31. Ants On A Train

32. Insecticide [01:25 - End]

33. Small Sacrifice

34. Escape

35. Theme From Ant-Man

36. About Damn Time

37. Tales To Astonish!

* Wild guess

BATMAN

Any corrections or comments are welcome of course.

Sources: first La-La Land Records Release, the Elfman/Burton box & the Danny Elfman Batman Collection

The DE Batman Collection is arguably the best sounding source, but the E/B is probably not far off, though it sounds much more reverb-y. Between the first LLL release and the E/B box, I usually chose the latter.

(Since the producers have said so, I’ve assumed that the DE Batman Collection contains all the film mixes and film versions, so I haven’t gone back to the film to check.)

TITLES

DEBC CD2 01 + EB 1

(There’s a crackling sound in the film mix on the EB around 0:41 which is probably due to clipping during editing of the film mix. The original album doesn’t have this, so if this disturbs you, you can use the original album version on the LLL – entirely, or until 0:45.)

(Note: the Film Version of the Batman Titles seems to be just a film mix (only very slightly different) of the album version (it’s the same recording, I think) – except perhaps for that clipped section in the beginning, which also seems to be shortened by less than half a second at the very beginning of that section (notice the first of the pairs of beats coming in half a second earlier than the album version). I think it's probably just the same recording, but it’s been clipped either due to amplifying that part (because of the different mix) or to micro-editing it? It's also possible they mixed in part from another take of course. It's certainly not from either LLL Alternate 1 or 2.))

FAMILY / FIRST BAT / ROOF FIGHT (Film Mix)

DEBC CD1 02

JACK VS ECKHARDT (Film Mix)

DEBC CD1 03

UP BUILDING / CARD SNAP

DEBC CD1 04

BATZONE / AXIS SETUP

DEBC CD1 05

SHOOTOUT (Film Mix)

DEBC CD1 06

KITCHEN TRANSITION (Film Version) / KITCHEN DINNER / SURGERY

DEBC CD1 07

STAIR KISS / FACE-OFF / BEDDY BYE

DEBC CD1 08

(the opening of Stair Kiss seems to be very slightly differently edited as compared to the previous LLL)

ROASTED DUDE

DEBC CD1 09

VICKI SPIES

DEBC CD1 10

CLOWN ATTACK

DEBC CD1 11

BRUCE CONTEMPLATES / PHOTOS

DEBC CD1 12

MEN AT WORK

DEBC CD1 13

PAPER SPIN / ALICIA’S MASK

DEBC CD1 14

VICKI GETS A GIFT

DEBC CD1 15

ALICIA’S UNMASKING

DEBC CD1 16

RESCUE / BATMOBILE CHASE / STREET FIGHT

DEBC CD1 17

DESCENT INTO MYSTERY (Film Mix)

DEBC CD1 18

BATCAVE / PAPER THROW

DEBC CD1 19

THE TRUTH

LLL CD2 24

(This is mistakenly titled Joker’s Muzak on the LLL releases.)

(To my ears the version on the previous LLL release sounds a lot better than the one on the DEBC. Don’t know why or maybe I’m mistaken.)

JOKER’S POEM

EB 13 (or DEBC CD1 20)

SAD PICTURES

DEBC CD1 21

CHALLENGE / DREAM / TENDER BATCAVE

DEBC CD1 22

(Note the track title – it’s reversed on the LLL releases)

BATSUIT / CHARGE OF THE BATMOBILE

DEBC CD1 23

JOKER FLIES TO GOTHAM / BATWING I

DEBC CD1 24

BATWING II

DEBC CD1 25

CATHEDRAL CHASE

DEBC CD1 26

WALTZ

DEBC CD1 27

SHOWDOWN I / SHOWDOWN II

DEBC CD1 28

FINALE

DEBC CD1 29

END CREDITS

DEBC CD1 30

Bonus Tracks

TITLES (Alternate Mix)

DEBC CD1 01

(= LLL CD2 29 0:00-2:47)

(This is probably the original take, which was used to create the album version from 0:00-1:20 and approx. 2:20-end (but with a different mix – note the more prominent piano in the latter part). The middle part is not used and contains an error at 1:31. Note: In the very last beat of the album version there seems to be a kind of ‘hiccup’ that isn’t there in this “Alternate #2” (perhaps some form of clipping during mastering or so?))

According to the producer, this is the “70mm” mix.

ROOF FIGHT (Album Mix)

EB 02 (or DEBC CD2 02)

(contains additional piano overlay. Seems to be the same take, at least largely.)

JACK VS ECKHARDT (with Overlay)

LLL CD1 03

SHOOTOUT (Alternate Mix)

LLL CD1 06

KITCHEN TRANSITION (Alternate) / KITCHEN DINNER / SURGERY

LLL CD1 07

(“Dinner Transition” is different here.)

BRUCE CONTEMPLATES / PHOTOS (Alternate)

DEBC CD2 26

TV NEWS THEME

DEBC CD2 22

(Longer than on the previous LLL release, has a proper ending now.)

JOKER’S COMMERCIAL (Stereo Mix)

DEBC CD2 23

RESCUE (with Original Ending)

DEBC CD2 27

DESCENT INTO MYSTERY (Album Mix)

DEBC CD2 10

In case you want to add the album mix, which features the choir in a very slightly more prominent way.

(BATSUIT / CHARGE OF THE BATMOBILE (Album Mix))

EB 15

(Not really essential at all, but the percussion and trumpets are slightly different mixed in the first part of Charge of the Batmobile)

(SHOWDOWN I (Alternate Mix) / SHOWDOWN II)

LLL 28 first part + EB 19

(Again not really essential whatsoever, but the opening of Showdown I is somewhat differently mixed.)

TITLES (Alternate Take)

DEBC CD2 25

(This “Alternate #1” on the LLL seems to be the only true (entire) alternate take available of the Batman theme.)

Additional Bonus Tracks

THE BATMAN THEME (Piano Demo)

Batman: The Animated Series Volume 2 CD 1 (easter egg on last track)

AXIS (Worktape)

EB 32

(Demo for Shootout?)

PHOTOS (Wild Vocal) / BEDDY BYE (Celeste Only)

DEBC CD2 29 2:49-end

JOKER’S COMMERCIAL (Worktape) / JOKER’S COMMERCIAL (Film Edit)

EB 28 + 29

(It’s impossible to have a clean ending for the worktape. Since EB 29 is just a superfluous film edit, what I did for my own edit was replace the film edit with the mono mix from the first LLL release – see the next track)

JOKER’S COMMERCIAL (Mono Mix)

LLL CD2 23

WACKY (Worktape)

EB 33

(Perhaps an idea for Descent into Mystery?)

HERRMANN-ESQUE THING (Worktape)

EB 31

(this is similar to material in Bat Cave)

WILD THEME (Worktape)

EB 36

(An idea for Batwing II, or if not, for Batmobile Chase?)

BATWING IDEA (Worktape)

EB 37

WALTZ (Worktape)

EB 35

(Probably worktape for Waltz)

WALTZ – MUSIC BOX (Worktape)

EB 34

(Cf the end of Showdown)

TITLES (Worktape)

EB 30

(almost sounds like a cross between the Titles and the End Credits)

I had attempted to put the tracks in order from memory, but I haven't seen the film in years, and I can't vouch for most of the bonus tracks. This is as far as I got:

1. Naked Lunch

18. Writeman

19. Hauser and O'Brien (complete)

2. Hauser and O'Brien/Bugpowder

6. Simpatico/Misterioso

12. Dr. Benway

8. Interzone Suite

5. The Black Meat

14. Ballad/Joan

Another request.... Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe's SONS OF LIBERTY score is most certainly not in order, considering track 2 "Boston Radicals" is the victory at the end of the show.
