New Shows....

After watching The Emmys last night, which I thought had some great wins, but anyway, after realizing how many shows had left us... I started wondering about new shows coming up this season and wondered who was looking forward to what, if any.

Mine are:

Lost

CSI: NY

and I wouldn't be me if I didn't include Desperate Housewives (good old campy fun I'm hoping)

No new comedies I'm exited about but I will watchand root for Joey to be good. Great casting with Jennifer Coolidge and Drea Di Mateo.

Here's a good Emmy quote:

Drea's acceptance speach - "OK, I have nothing to say. There's so many people that are responsible for this. But if I even try to thank any of them right now I might puke, choke, cry or die, and you've all seen me do that"

None of those new shows are good. They all stink. I don't think a really good show has started probably since 1999 or 2000. And I'm glad they had the brains to grant the best drama award to the only worthy show among the 5, The Sopranos, which is one of the best shows ever, and this last season (the 5th) was amazing.

P.S. Like Tony Kushner's speech? ;)

God, you really are in a pissy mood these days... On the rag much? ;)

Actually Lost is getting the best reviews all around from every paper, magazine and tv show, so me thinks you are wrong Mr.

I am also looking forward to Lost. I'm a fan, not a big raving lunatic fan mind you, of Alias and I like the premise. I just hope enough happens for it to keep my interest.

I'm also looking forward to:

Clubhouse

Desperate Housewives

CSI: NY (LOVE LOVE LOVE those CSI shows)

Without a Trace - new season

Everwood - new season (Great f'in show...although I missed all of last season)

Jack and Bobby (Good pilot)

and a surprise:

How Clean Is Your House.

There's just something so disgusting about how people live in that show, it makes me sick. It also makes me feel good about my cluttered mess. I don't feel as bad after watching that.

Oh...

and Arrested Development which was, by far, one of the funniest sitcoms in a long long time (Excluding all of Adult Swim, and the cartoon regulars).

I'm very happy Arrested Development got three big awards last night, now maybe people will sit and watch it. How CLean is Your House sounds funny as hell, I haven't seen it though.

I'm really happy it got those awards as well. It totally deserved them. David Cross is such a uber-funny guy. "How Clean..." is a great show, the two women from England that star in the show are actually pretty funny. But it's just amazing how these dirty f*cks live!!!! I highly recommend it.

God, you really are in a pissy mood these days...

Only when it comes to the state of TV nowadays. I can't say I've seen too much, but what I've seen, I've hated. I hate CSI- Bruckheimer does enough harm on the big screen, why fill TV with more emptiness like CSI and The Amazing Race?

Reality shows are the worst thing that's happened to TV yet. There's still nothing that can beat a good scripted and acted show, like The Sopranos (one of the only worthwhile dramas). But we are lucky in our comedies, there are more than a fair share of good ones. OF course, very few stay funny for more than a few years, but Malcom In The Middle, Everybody Loves Raymond, Arrested Development- all guarentee a good laugh, and we still have the genious of The Simpsons and The Office.

Hmmm.....Very pissy indeed.....

A lot of reality shows are trashy and just stupid, but I really enjoy some of them. Survivor, The Amazing Race, and The Apprentice are all well-made, engaging and enjoyable to watch. Many people just lump all reality TV together as being worthless. That's fine, but I judge shows individually rather than by genre. To each his own, I suppose.

Reality shows are the decline of western civilization incarnate. It's not that they are not interesting, they could very well be, but they range from being bankrupt of ideas to exploitation. They're like soap operas to women- the women freely admit that the shows are poinless, stupid, shameless, idiotic, terribly written, acted and presented, yet they oculd sit down and within 5 seconds get addicted to a new one.

IMO, there's nothing to be gained by blurring the line between reality and fiction.

Surivor is the only show left currently in production that I watch. I consider Survivor to be so much more than a "reality show". To classify it with all the crap that falls under that banner is an insult. To me it's one of the greatest games of strategy that's ever been created. ;)

I might give Enterprise yet another chance this year. From what I've seen the new guy they've brought in to run it actually has half a clue, pandering for famous former Trek actor guestspots notwithstanding (Brent Spiner is confirmed for 3 eps, Shatner is still a possibility).

Well Morlock, I don't quite know how to respond to you, because IMO you're looking way too far into it. It's only television! Some of the people here spend so much time righteously lauding and disparaging movies, tv shows, etc from on high, that they forget those things don't have to have a higher meaning - they can just be fun! I watch TV for enjoyment and find it in numerous ways, from reality shows, to sit-coms, to dramas, and on and on. I could be wrong, but your broad comments suggest that you haven't invested much time into watching the right ones.

Amen! Never watched a CSI show in my life, thank god. All my shows are dying out on me these days I swear... I'm still waiting for them to screen the rest of Smallville Season 2 down here (no one watches that show). I totally forgot to watch the Emmys last night when I got back from playing tennis. So I have no idea who won. Some silly actors and actresses no doubt. And Ray you can't dismiss it as "only television" on the one hand and then defend it on the other (well you can, and indeed you did but ...). Everything means something. And usually it's not the same thing to each person. :|

CYPHER - off to watch The O.C.! Guilty as charged. LOL

Listen Up will be dead probably before the season's end.

I'm also looking forward to the season premire of Smallville. After the season finale I'm curious to see what they do with it.

Justin - Who doesn't regularly watch Smallville and will not pursue it if this new season sucks.

I'm not big on reality shows but The Amazing Race is fantastic. It's not your run of the mill reality show.... So yes, I do think you are being a little pissy, and you think Comedies are better than Dramas right now... What planet are you watching TV on???? The comedies suck right now. The only good shows are the dramas. Soprano's is great, but so is Six Feet Under, West Wing, ER, Law and Order, Alias and 24... You can complain all you like actually, you are only agravating yourself at the end of the day...

I've never watched CSI ever but I want to this time because of Gary Sinease. I love him as an actor so I will be tuned in at least for the start.

And Cypher, the emmeys were good for once because people who sdeserved to win got it finally. Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon for Sex and the City, Drea DI Mateo and I can't remember the guys name off hand for Sopranos, Angels in America made a fantastic sweep of most of the awards, kelsey Grammar and David Hyde Pierce for Frasier, Alison Janney for West Wing, and some others.....

Six Feet Under is ok. West Wing is ok, but only if you're up to fantasy. ER is boring. Law and Order is like it always was, just with a greatly inferior cast. Alias is terrible and always was. 24 is getting more and more ridicules. First seaon was ok, second was very good, third was eh, but it had it's moments.

I agree, I thought they did a good job with the awards. Just the awards for The Sopranos restored my faith in the awards, and the others were good choices as well. I haven't seen Angels in America. It doesn't look too good to me, but I'll see it just for Thomas newman and Merryl Streep playing The Rabbi.

I never dismissed television as something unimportant or trivial. I was responding to the statement that

Reality shows are the decline of western civilization incarnate.
This, IMO, is digging way too deep.

The only new show I will watch is Lost. Continuing shows I watch are West Wing, Alias, and 24. Shows I will buy on DVD but not watch on broadcast include only the Sopranos (and formerly Sex and the City).

Ocelot,

I was thinking the exact same thing! It was TOOOOOoo much like Jurassic Park, however I have read reports saying that it definately isn't dinosaurs.... so I'm not sure what it is. I hope it isn't dino's, because that would be a "been there, done that" cop-out thing to do.

Other than that, I absolutely LOVED "Lost"! I can't wait till the next one!

Yeah, I also liked Lost. This show really is all about fear and social dynamics. The scenarios are endless. Systems of government, divison of labor, social segregation... all of that will be explored.

Yay - I'm glad Cynthia Nixon won. Miranda is my fave Sex & the City lady.

Hey KM, you watch Survivor, right? I hope I wasn't the only one humming the "Journey to the Island" fanfare from JP during the shots of the reward helicopter flying over the jungle. :D The shots were absolutely beautiful, really reminded me of JP's island arrival scene.

John- who's casually seen bits and pieces of Lost and agrees that the woman KM mentioned is red-hot.

I'm really disappointed in Survivor this season . . . it's just blah compared to past ones. On the other hand, I've gotten into Desperate Housewives, which is a weird, great comedy/drama/mystery/suburbia type show.

The only show I'm watching this season is Everybody Loves Raymond.

Eh, Smallville lost me when louis lane started makin' out with another chick. :)

Oh wait that might be a spoiler. :P

Justin - Who's also been busy...

P.S. I've been watching Malcolm In The Middle on syndication 5 days a week. Holy crap is that a great show! Every episode is like the funniest thing I've ever seen! How do they come up with this stuff? LOL

Link to comment

Yeah, Malcolm rocks. It's like a real-life version of The Simpsons, only crazier, because it's live-action and not animated. Too bad they're only showing it once a week here, and it's episodes that've been shown a dozen times already.

24: Day 3 started here last week, but I don't think I'm going to watch another episode on TV. I've gotten used to seeing 24 in full widescreen glory so much, I don't think I can stand to watch the crappy cropped version, even if it's only cropped down from a 16:9 aspect ratio. Plus, I hate the commercials.

In a few weeks time, I'll have saved up enough money to buy the DVD box set, which came out a couple of weeks ago already. If all goes well, I might be picking up Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban around that time too. :)

But anyway, the first episode looked okay, but didn't look like it was really any indication for the rest of the season, as they spent most of their time just setting up the new day, and showing the transitions from last year.

I think Survivor picked up in the last 2 episodes.

Crap, I missed both those.

It is? How is Teri Hatcher?

Hot. Definitely a milf (on the show, anyhow). Yeah, I highly recommend it.

I think Joey is shaping up to be quite acceptable, after the disaster it promised to be in the pilot episode. Certainly not a classic, but more than decent.

For those who liked Friends of course.
